by the end of the video I was expecting "Don't actually paint with these brushes, use them to demonstrate to others that you are a serious painter only, just use synthetic when its time to paint".
@B.D.E.Күн бұрын
The advice is don't waste expensive brushes on jobs that cheap ones do equally well, such as basecoating and applying washes. Save sable brushes for the work that synthetics don't do as well, such as anything that requires a well controlled fine point, e.g. edge highlighting and freehanding details, or a combination of large wet paint volume plus fine control, such as wet bending.

Good idea and perfect timing, it's almost like you planned it... My tips are: 1. Keep paint in the top part of the brush 2. Don't use washes on nice brushes 3. Don't use metallics on nice brushes 4. Keep water clean, perhaps have two glasses of water, use one to get the excess off and the second to thoroughly clean whilst painting) 5. Store wet brushes upside down (the pringles container Squidmar shipped allows you to wedge brushes upside down in the foam) 6. Brush soap can help get baked in the paint out, but use it often otherwise it's limited in how much it can rescue your brushes in my experience. 7. Prey to the painting gods that your shiny new brushes will not split after 30 minutes despite being careful :D

I have a handful of Windsor & Newton brushes that I've used for about 7 years now. I use washes, contrast and metallics with them. They're absolutely fine with regular washing and cleaning using The Masters soap, and being careful about keeping the ferrule clean.
@terpdx2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Use my sable brushes with metallics all the time. Sometimes it's the only way I'm going to get fine trim details done on a model w/o needing to reload the brush every few strokes. As long as I give them a good cleaning with the soap when I'm done, the brushes are fine. The only time I've ruined sable brushes (basically only the first few nice brushes I've bought) was when I ignorantly allowed paint to get up into the ferrule. That being said, I don't recommend using them with the super thin metallics like Vallejo Metal Color or any of the alcohol-based metallics. Those paints wick right up into the ferrule too easily.

I've used top quality Kolinsky brushes for many years now. I've never had a problem using thinned paint (glazes, washes, "contrast paint", or whatever) or metallics with them. If your brush is wet all the way to the ferrule, say if you dip your brush in water (hint, you need to dip your brush in water), the paint is going to flow along the length of the wetted bristles. As long as you rinse regularly (I rinse every couple of minutes or so), there's no problem. Metallics have (usually) mica flakes to give that specular reflection. These flakes can be slightly more abrasive than most pigments, but not so much that they will wreck your brushes. And you don't need to worry much about your paint water, either. It has far less pigment than any sort of paint you're likely to use. Just rinse regularly and change your water every session or so. Expensive brushes generally cost about three times as much as mid-grade synthetics (US prices), and regardless of what sort of acrylic paints you use, they last (IME) about ten to twenty times as long. I use my expensive brushes for everything but the most damaging tasks (drybrushing and stippling, usually). Brushes are tools. If you buy an expensive hammer, would you avoid hitting things with that hammer? If you would, why would you bother to buy the expensive hammer at all? Hammers are for hitting things and even pretty hammers don't really look all that good on the wall. Brushes are for painting. That said, tools have limited life and you have to expect that. Buy good brushes and use good brushes. If you just can't stomach that, buy the cheapest brushes you can find that have decent points and expect to discard them after one or two minis.
@jonashenriksson21823 жыл бұрын
Brushes are for painting, yes. But there’s a difference in painting a neat layer and dry brushing metallics, even if it’s both “painting”. Hammers are great for hammering, but I wouldn’t use my screw driver for drilling a hole :)

I think this is one of the most comprehensive tip videos on brush care I've seen. There's one thing that you usually don't see which I picked up from monsieur Darren Latham - if I have picked your curiosity check it out, don't want to post spoilers ! Agree with most of the tips, though I think some things could be debated due to the additional time/effort they take - like switching a brush for a quick shade, but if doing more stuff like that, sure! There's one thing I'd debate - the basecoat - that totally depends on what type of basecoat you're doing and what end result you want to get. What I mean is the varying level of smoothness - and I did paint Imperial Fists marine with 4 layers of Yriel Yellow as basecoat... I'd rather that be super smooth!

there's nothing wrong with that. This guy is just trying to advertise a brand to you. Real artists use cheap brushes because the skill is what determines the outcome, not the tool.

Don't know if you have it over there, but for dried on paint, the best thing I have found is hand cleaner. The stuff auto mechanics use to wash their hands. Like Gojo, Goop, or Fast Orange. It really will take the old dried out paint out of a brush, then use a good conditioner on it, or just give it a swirl in brush soap to condition it.

Thanks for the video!!! I have been using shampoo and conditioner to clean my paint brushes and while they return the brushes to the tip shape, I have found s rubbing 50/50 hand sanatizer with water to clean them properly as I am a bit of a tight ass. Hilariously, I found the GW starter brush is the best brush for every painting application except textures 🤣 I use oil paint brushes you can buy at craft stores for 50 cents a brush for pva glue and textures as this is cheaper and better with coverage

When you used the soap that looked like a lot of force bending it onto there. I thought you said earlier to never do that even with just water when washing it out, wut
@JorenMathews3 жыл бұрын
There's a point past which you shouldn't bend it. Approaching 90 degrees roughly. When he was doing was fine.

Soap should moisturise the bristles and make them more flexible though, so maybe they don't get as damaged when they're bent wet and soapy rather than when a bit drier.
@spork8613 жыл бұрын
@@p_serdiuk No at all points were we talking about wet. Well, I guess he just showed us a bad visual example for the sake or not ruining a brush for the example then, because at 4:27 he pushes it against the bottom of the glass and there he pushes it just as hard as when he cleaned it with the soap at 10:11

Got it. Don’t use expensive brushes
@deifiedtitan3 жыл бұрын
If all else fails and you're thinking of throwing your brush away, hit it with some cheap acetone-based nail polish remover. Acetone breaks down acrylic extremely well but doesn't break down the proteins in hair. It does remove oil however, so you'll need to use a brush soap afterwards to recondition the bristles to working standards.

Or just don't waste your money. Simply no need for anything resembling an expensive brush for drybrushing. Any synthetic brush will do.

Da Vinci paint brushes have a range called "Colineo", derived from "kolinsky" + "neo" to effectively mean "new kolinsky" that have replicated, as far as is currently possible, the kolinsky sable feel while still being synthetic. They come incredibly close and are about half the price of pure sable brushes like the world-famous Winsor & Newton Series 7. Well worth looking into if you want top tier brushes but still want to save a few dollars.

The W&N S7 brushes I bought were very disappointing.
@lordbiscuitthetossable53523 жыл бұрын
I gotta say, I'm one of those guys who uses winsor and newton to apply my contrast paints. Ahahah! Though in all fairness the brushes I primarily use for that are fairly old, and I pretty much have to wash them out every time as inevitably ink will get right up in the fearl. Generally my tip is to colour code my brushes based on what they do. I use cheap synpth brushes for baseboating, and I apply a little paint to the base to separate out my detail brushes that aren't use for anything else. Contrast, metallic brushes are only used for those purposes and are never reused for anything else. The other thing I do is that I give the brushes a good wash whenever I am done with them. You will be surprised how much crap you get out of a brush by applying a little dish or brush soap to it. Pretty much a single session painting contrast paints has me repeating the cleaning step at least 5 times to be completely rid of that mixture. So believe me when I say that you should not be using your best brushes to apply washes, or at the very least, make it a large brush dedicated expressly to that purpose. It will have a shorter life then just paint but it will be well worth it. This also goes for anything you apply flow improver on; this will also get right up in there regardless of the type of paint, so it's basically a wash as far as brush care goes. Just got your brushes today though, so I'm looking forwards to working with them.

My detail brushes are the only time I spend a few extra dollars other than that cheaper natural hair and synthetic brushes all the way. Even with cheaper brush, I still follow all your rules and they perform well.
@oldlking45102 жыл бұрын
A good brush is like a porsche in the garage, you drive your daily most of the week (use synthetiks for basecoating, drybrushing, washes etc) and take out your baby on the weekends (Use your pro grade sables for the fine details, layering work.) Too many people think you should buy 5 different types of sables and use sable for everything because they are the best but there is no reason to do that. Its also more enjoyable to do most of the painting with cheaper brushes that you dont have to baby so much and then the last 20% use the good stuff.

Nice video :). Only thing I would add is don't rest them upright when wet as dirty water can still drain down into the ferrule. I've managed to save a few brushes using the methods in this video but never thought about washes being bad before, (and thin glazes?), so thanks for that insight. Looking forward to receiving my brushes and bust, (if we can ever get anything across the border again ;) )

I'm trying to consume as many tutorials and advice videos on painting and modeling as I am just now considering getting back into the hobby. What I got from this video is DONT USE an expensive brush at all. So many "dont use for this" or "dont use for that". "Dont do this with your brush". I was almost expecting him to say...DONT EVEN LOOK AT YOUR BRUSH...cause it could get offended and not work!
@sphenopalatineganglioneuralgia3 жыл бұрын
I always just use three water pots at all times. I do the first dunk in the main dirty pot, get most stuff out, then give it a generous rinse in the second pot, then in the third if I'm changing colors, only the second if I'm still using the same color and just need to avoid drying paint on the brush. This allows me to really not need to change the water until I'm done for the day, for the most part. Also use a paper towel to 'dry/swipe' the brush after rinsing a few times to get hard stuff off the ferrel. Works well for me.

It's bullshit because he use them for blending and you know what you do when you blend? you add water similar to wash, so naaahh wash and contrast are fine, our dude is just being a snob. You can even use them with metallics but when you are done they need to be cleaned extra carefully.
