Paul I kiss your feet!! This is a transformational video for me, a new watercolor painter, now much frustrating struggle has been eliminated with these techniques. This sharpened wooden end of a brush is so simple and soo effective. It transforms my poor overworked trees and grasses. Will get myself a natural sponge and pretend I am in Japan in cherry blossom season. Holding a round brush flat and dragging over dry paper, what could be better! And finally the piece de resistance - how to make misty trees. This video has to be one of the very best I have ever watched for simple effective techniques that can be used over and over in so many different paintings. Thank you Marguerite

Arborist! Ooh! lovely word 🎄🌳🌲🌴 I HATED painting trees! Have enjoyed watercolour painting for several years and felt like I was going to the dentist when I needed to paint these beautiful species of wood and foliage, yes I love trees they are a beautiful necessity and have fantastic shapes, but I tried to avoid drawing and painting them until I came across your Tree Tutorial and What a FANTASTIC HELP sharpening a brush and using it to do the branches. Something so simple as this has changed my watercolour experience, the misery has gone! 😘 Thank you, you artistic genius. Hahaha, listening to a play and he is now talking about Special Branch! I began drawing in graphite painting years ago. I felt like I "could breathe again for the first time." Then something happened and of course, my art was sidelined. Only recently have I learned what caused the issue. I found your videos over the past 2 weeks and have learned so much that would have made my journey far more enjoyable and much easier......... Your techniques give wings to my work and I love them.I've tried some of them. The minimal number of brushes, colors and options are truly helpful, and provide for a meaningful, engaging and successful result. Thank you, so much. Of course I have purchased your book and can't wait for it to arrive. Last wednesday I learned that I have NPH Hydrocephalus and will require brain surgery at the end of this week. Thanks to your upbeat approach and teaching skills, I now that I will be able to paint again and I have something to look forward to when I get home............PS. The book's going with me to keep my spirits high. Again. Bright Blessings and many thanks. Your KZbin channel reached me in Washington state, on the upper west coast of the USA. First your marvelous work with skies, then this terrific treatment of trees! Again, it's excellent-as is your relaxed, articulate delivery. Sharpening the non-bristle end of the brush to do branches is pure genious and simplicity rolled into one. My only regret is the light-speed of the evergreen segment, where you also dropped any discussion of colors/washes. NOBODY would have grown bored with a real-time treatment of evergreens!

Hi Laurie, just wondering how you have got on with this as I appear to be having the same problem. I’ve doctored the end of a no.5 brush, tried using different thicknesses of paint, and just seem to score within the painted area (the tree trunk). Outside of the painted area I just seem to have a tiny feint trace of a twig! Paul makes it look so easy...

@@ritacurrie9842 Hi Rita, I didn't have too much luck with the sharpened end of my brush, but I've found other methods that work. I find that using the tip of a palette knife instead of the sharpened end of my brush is a little more successful. Mostly, though, I use a rigger brush or a very small round (like a #2). Happy painting!

This was a great tutorial for artists!! I am not a “flash” artist. I’ve taken several classes online and in person, free and Paid. I always gather something from each class however, the subject painting is always completed in each of those classes. And that’s just not how I paint. It’s nice to get some reinforcement about letting it sit for a day or two and coming back after looking at it. I prop my paintings up in my main room outside the studio and look at it 1000 times a day. Then finally I’ll come back and say… It’s done, it needs a little more darkness here, or I really messed this one up completely. Lol Thanks for the free advice! You’re classes are some of the best. 😊

Started watercolour in lockdown and have a long way to go. Really want to loosen up and love line and wash. Have watched the windmill and now the trees. Can feel a practice session coming along. The simplicity is so beautiful. Not sure about sharpening the end of my brushes - they are a bit pricy. Will definitely give one of my old brushes a haircut! I will be coming back.

Thank you for the link on painting palm trees. I will practice these and other trees….. I have only just started doing watercolour, and thought it was not for me but now I am enjoying it much more since watching your uTube videos. I will be away in the California desert in the winter, away from my painting teacher, so I will rely on your great tips. Thanks so much Paul. Arleen, Vancouver, Canada

You are the most amazing talent and teacher on KZbin. I just started painting two years ago (in my 60’s) and have learned so much from you. I have an “art studio” set up in my unused dining room, and paint almost every day. You inspire me and also make me laugh. I have watched many videos on tree painting, and your’s is by far the best. Thank you for sharing your talent and ideas!

Paul, where have you been all my life ;). I've been struggling with watercolor, except for flowers. I yearned to paint good trees especially. Those trees were all fabulous! I bought your book, and will be watching more of your videos and rewatching this one. Time to go sharpen my brush end...
