Hi Friends.
Painting watercolor shouldn't be about rules but about finding JOY and using your precious free time to elevate your life. I'm here to push fears aside, avoid complicated tools and inspire free spirited, mood shifting watercolor experiences in short bursts of time.
1. Loose with pencil
2. Bold brushstrokes
3. Sketching with watercolor
I hope you'll paint along with me and ask all the questions you want in comments! Post your creations using the hashtags #artforjoysake and #forgetrulesforgetrightrememberjoy
Happy Painting!
XO, Kristy Rice

What a beautiful bouquet of leaves. I love all the colors you used. I have this set mind that you have to paint all leaves green. This completely changes my mind. You showed me that it's ok to think out of the box. Thank you Kristy!

Awesome lesson, Kristy! ☺ Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I bought that lil brush when I saw you using it. Now I want the whole set. 😣 The colors you've used are gorgeous! I have three of your books and they are so fun to play in. I love how each page is printed twice. Thanks again for your videos. P.S. Oh, yeah, ...the metal part of the brush is called the "ferrule", not "barrel". Possibly, some call the handle of the brush (the long wood or plastic part) the "barrel", but the metal part is just called the "ferrule". Fun fact of the day 🤔 Have a good one!☺ www.drawingandpaintinglessons.com/images/Anntomy-Brush.jpg
@Adrienne926
@Adrienne926 6 жыл бұрын
Dude... She simply misspoke and has called it a 'ferrule' many times in the past. But to take it further and actually link the anatomy of a paintbrush to a professional painter, just in case she didn't know AFTER explaining it twice, don't you think that's a tad much, maybe even a bit insulting? I mean.. you actually explained what the handle was to her??? come on

I love your work in this video but the part about not turning the paper wasn't cool. If someone has movement issues, moving the paper might prevent pain and discomfort. It might sound discouraging to someone interested.
@KristyRice

Thanks for the feedback. This was just one suggestion for challenging oneself and developing muscle memory with this particular brush. If you continue to watch my videos, you’ll notice I actually encourage folks to turn their page however it is most comfortable for them. I was taught strictly NOT to turn my page and always found that to be incredibly limiting, BUT it can be a great way to challenge yourself along the art making journey.

Love this lesson Kristy! Thank you! I struggle with selecting a palette of colors to use for a project such as this. I know about the color wheel, but I don't know which colors to use to do a practice like this. For me, the color is equally as important and the strokes, because I won't practice the strokes if the colors aren't pretty. What is it I need to learn?
@KristyRice
@KristyRice 5 жыл бұрын
Robin Cooper ahh this is such a good question. If you know the color wheel, you know everything... your basic tenants are there...complimentary, secondary and so on... use that as a base for color choice. I use complimentary colors heavily... for example you’ll often see me add a touch of pink to a green leaf, very subtle but it adds a zing. Also spend some time searching out colors. Cut them out and then play with combinations. Make note of the combos you love. Happy painting!

I'm new to this video art-teach stuff, & I thoroughly enjoyed this one - the part u said that most resonated with me was when you called the dagger brush a workhorse - you just have to learn how to work it. Being a horse lover I'm sure I'll always think of my dagger as a horse. It feels silky like a horse too. But the real reason I came back to put in a comment was that the still picture of this leafy video - when I first saw it & also after I left, - I thought the paper towel with the haphazard colors beside the brush was a beautiful blossom of some sort in the upper left corner. In fact, I would want to recreate it as a blossom. Maybe with these leaves or whatever comes out of my workhorse brush! Does anyone else see what I saw??

So I find myself coming back to the basics to re-learn what I missed the first time around., Your brush work is amazing and I watched as closely as possible, but my composition doesn't look quite like yours, but maybe because I was using a 1/2" dagger brush. So now, nothing will do but I have to have a 1/4" dagger. While I wait for its arrival, I'll practice leaves with maybe an angled shader. Thanks for your tutorials. I'm in the audience watching!

Yvette Williams I purposely don’t talk too much about paint mixtures. I really want, beginners especially to not get bogged down in worry over using or mixing the “right” colors. I’ve seen new artists get too wrapped up in color mixing, get frustrated and abandon painting. I want to focus on brushstrokes, the right materials, a positive attitude and let the details come once you’ve become passionate about the process :) Thanks so much for watching! And I’m definitely planning a separate video on my approach to color mixing :)

Kristy, you said something that clicked with me. I am majorly double jointed which is a pain in a lot of areas. Just about everyone will tell you to hold your brush further up, and that just doesn't work for me. I am amazed with the difference I have with control. Lesson learned, not all rules apply to every individual. I sat down and painted my prettiest leaves to date. I have never been heavy handed with water which you have shown to be a good thing. Thank you so much. Now I feel confident to paint in my Summer Cutting Garden book.

Gorgeous work! I could watch you paint all day long. Question: I have the 1/8" & 1/4" of these brushes but the tip always splits while I'm painting. I quit using them out of frustration. I have 2 of each, one of each have never been used and the ones that have are still like new. Any suggestions about the issues I'm having?

Oh my goodeness that is really odd! I've never had this issue before and have probably owned nearly 100 of these brushes over the years. BUT it sounds to me like a manufacturing defect honestly. I would reach of to the company (Royal Brush) and see what they suggest. This definitely shouldn't be happening!

I happened to come to your video page merely by accident. Then when looking at the side panel, your's really caught my eye because I love watercolor. I'm a newbie at it and thought I'd jump in to see what you're up to!! WELL.....am I glad I did. I loved it, Kristy. In fact, I watched it twice! You truly make it look so easy - so I'm going to give it a go and see what I can do. I'll be watching more of you and your painting - thanks for catching my eye!!

Hello Kristy. I am a newbie trying to get the hang of watercolor and having a hard time with leaves in making them look real. Someone recommended you and said you were great with watercolor. Well, I watched your video tonight and listened to your outstanding directions.This was one of the best video's I've seen and plan on continuing to learn from you. You're wonderful, Kristy. But there's just one thing.....I'm left handed. I really did do better with practicing tonight, it just seems like when I go left when everybody else goes right. I was wondering if you had any suggestions. Thank you, Kristi.

Maeve Garcia thank you so much! Goodness I’ve honestly never thought about painting issues for left handers. Shame on me!! I am able to paint with my left hand, albeit slowly so I might suggest trying some leaves with your right to see how it feels. Knowing that feeling may help you better understand how to best adapt this technique for you!

Thank you so much for sharing your methods and for the eloquent explanation of your techniques! This is really encouraging. Only I have just called the manufacturer and they don't do that brush any more. Can you suggest another brush that is similar to the dagger brush, please? Thank you Kirsty - from another well deserved follower x

I have to be honest, I rarely mention the exact colors I'm using because my goal is for you to worry less about the "right" colors and focus more on the technique and having fun!

I love your easy style. I also love that you didn’t put names to the colors, that discourages us beginners who have simple pallets. I had wondered why water colorist didn’t use the dagger brush because it looks like it is a lot more versatile than a round brush. I am going to order the brush.I am a new subscriber and cant. wait to see what you have in store for me to discover and inspire me. Thank you so much!

This brush flippin' rules! I bought this a couple of years ago and it and the "cat's tongue" shaped oval brush are two that I use the most. I've always been surprised that more people aren't loving this dagger brush more.

Love your colors! What a great way to practice and explore color. Some artists refer to the method of touching on color to disperse it as charging. I did buy the brush and love it, thanks.
