How To Paint Winter Landscape

When we paint a winter landscape one of the main questions is what color is the snow? If we use just white the picture will look flat. In this video I share with you my process of choosing colors for painting snow. Whether the snow is on the ground or on tree branches it will have volume and look realistic. Another goal is to make sure my colors let me capture the brilliant light of a sunny winter day.

So lovely! I would like to see you end the video with a Matt on the finished artwork, just to highlight it to best effect! I know sometimes we do not have a Mat ready but perhaps it is something to think about next time? Thanks for sharing this wonderful painting video with us.

Thank you! And that's an interesting suggestion. I'll try that in some videos, probably just a digital mockup, but it can give people an idea how that would look. Of course, this particular sketch was just that - a quick sketch, I would not mat or frame it, but even that would look nicer with a border around it :)

Dear Mrs Ballot, I would love to try a charcoal sketch like this to practice my value skills. What kind of charcoal do you recommend. Is there a set with different values in it?

I use vine charcoal. It’s easy to blend or pick it up with a kneaded eraser where I need lighter areas. You can also use compressed charcoal for richer black.
