Hi Brad about the clear coat, I'm a scale modeler, so I need to protect my "toys", I tried everything with my airbrush and only two things work for me, use a 2K without solvents, very difficult find and expensive because we need liquid to paint, and Wax, yes the wax is the best int his case, I know in USA the is a product called Future bright, is a product for floors, in my case I bought from Spain a Bosque Verde floor wax is the same thing but with less "ingredients", the thing is you are looking for Acrylic based wax and this thing will protect your paint without destroy the finish.

Oh nice. So you wax over this reflective finish?

I was able to clear coat and metallic gold paint job on a guitar by using spray paint lacquer by Rust-Oleum. It came out beautifully. My only downfall was that I did not apply enough layers and I did not wait long enough for the lacquer to cure.
@kimberlystorey7352 жыл бұрын
I'm curious as well. Was it mirror finish? What clear coat did you use exactly? Thank you.
@reset81402 жыл бұрын
I've learnt that you can bypass it by first applying the metallic paint, then spray on thinner for metalizer (although not from a spray can, which would make it more accessible for those of us who doesn't have a spray paint gun lol) and then clear coat it, and still keep the metallic effect. I haven't tried it myself so can't speak from own experience, but I know I've seen videos of it here on KZbin. Hopefully they maybe can make it for spray canisters in a near future.

I learn that clear coating metallic sprays does not work a few years ago. Tried it and it messed up a perfect chrome finish. The item was a car windshield waterjet so I though clear coat would have helped with the weather.
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
You chromed your windshield?

No the little water jet on the hood of the car that spays the water for the windshield wiper. The two on the car was chrome plated plastic but weather got to them and they looked terrible so I removed them and spray chromed them. They looked great after the chrome spray but when I tried to put on a clear coat the whole finished got really dull and unattractive. So quick question since I'm doing this for the first time. I'm working with Krylon Metallic gold foil spray paint. and I'm assuming I put it on too heavy as it seems to either bubble up in area's or I wasn't waiting long enough when I started between coats. The thing is it looks like a matte gold. Is it because I'm applying it too heavy? I noticed since you said you can't clear coat metallic paints that I probably applied it wrong. Should I just sand it down or use paint stripper and try again? Thanks I'm also painting an arcade stick body so it's made of plastic. I got a can of Rustoleum Metallic gold so if I have to strip the paint I'll just apply a a black primer base coat then just wait for it to dry then hit it with the metallic gold?
@BradAngove5 жыл бұрын
You’ll want to at least sand it back smooth and possibly all the way off, yes. Try a test piece. If you apply it too heavy it can bubble. To thin and it doesn’t get shiny enough. If you’re painting plastic you’ll want to start with an adhesion promoter or plastic compatible primer.

I want to paint the silver metal base of my couch to gold. What do I need to do? Rustoleum spray paint seems to be what people are saying they use. What are the easiest steps to do this? 1. Scrub with Scotch Brite pad. 2. Protect white leather with free-hand shield? What is this? (and scotch tape) 3. Spray Rustoleum gold paint in sweeping motion spurts with respirator on. Apply extra layers within 10-15 minutes. 4. Dry. Is that really it?

That’s it. Clean after sanding. I absolutely wouldn’t just use a freehand shield on a white couch though. You should be covering that thing as much as possible. I would probably cut some garbage bags into sheets and mask as much of the couch as practicable.

Hey Brad, great video! I have the bell set to notify me of new video's but I guess my bell is broken cause I haven't been getting notified. Just thought I would let you know in case others are having this issue. I have a question for you about filling holes in a guitar. I bought one of those Gibson Firebird zero guitars. In case your'e unaware of this guitar - it's basically a cheap Gibson, prices range from $400 to $600 brand new with a nice padded gig bag. It has special Gibson pickups in it that are not that good. The body style is basically an upside down Firebird. It's made of pine and has cheap tuners on it and uses Korean pots. If you check out the reviews on it you will see it gets terrible reviews and it well deserves that bad PR lol. I bought it from a guy here on You Tube strictly for one purpose - to completely customize it and see if people would show an interest in it. OK so I bought a new Bridge and tailpiece for it - the style thats in it right now is just a simple wrap around bridge with no tailpiece. This thing is so horribly off balanced that the front of it has actually made impressions into the wood due to the strings being tightened, bad idea Gibson! I knew I would have to drill two holes for the new tailpiece but I was unaware that the existing holes for the current bridge are too wide for a traditional ABR1 style. So my plan is to fill in those holes and drill new holes to match my new bridge. I will be repainting the whole guitar as well, so my question is what would you use to fill in those holes that i don't need? I have Elmers wood filler and was going to just use that but I thought about you and wondered if you knew of something better. Thanks in advance!
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
Drill the holes that are there up to the nearest size of dowel that you can get. Make sure you don’t go too big. Cut a couple pieces of dowel about 2 inches too long for the holes. Coat the insides of the holes with glue and hammer the dowels in. Wipe away excess glue and wait a day, then cut flush and sand smooth. That sounds like a fun project. I hope it goes well for you.

I going to strip my son's bike frame down to the metal and do some kind of paint on there. It probably doesn't matter whether I have a protective layer or not, he's going to scratch and mar the hell out of it anyway.

Wonderful details and it looks terrific! Especially helpful on the clear coat info.🎃

You can use Allclad ii Aqua Clear spray over it, no problem.

Interesting. I’ll have to try that out some time.

hey brad, what if you use a clear coat that doesn't have any of the solvents in it that traditional paint does? such as, shellac? after you put that on, you can apply poly or whatever, and it should be fine.

I know some rustoleum products have chemicals that take a while to vape off though, as I emailed the company and they said so. also, i tried using CA to clear coat an oil based sharpie paint marker, and it turned the silver to a dull grey. so, CA doesn't work, and i think that is the same issue with this type of paint, not the vapors.

Interesting. Shellac tends to give its own hue to things, so I’m not sure how that would turn out for this. It would certainly be a unique take on it.

I didn't see a thing about spray fan size, distance to hold can from surface, or overlapping spray passes, or did I miss something?
@BradAngove3 жыл бұрын
That information is typically on the can, but I have an older video on how to get an even coat of paint with spray cans if you need.
@chuckg20163 жыл бұрын
@@BradAngove Nothing to that detail on the cans but I did see your earlier post.

Hi! So I want to do spray paint (silver) should I buff or what do you recommend on this?
@roxanajacob63714 жыл бұрын
Never mind doesn’t let me post a pic. Its a brown and black large mirror. I want a silver shiny.
@BradAngove4 жыл бұрын
Are you using this same type of reflective metallic paint?
@roxanajacob63714 жыл бұрын
Brad Angove maybe I should?
@BradAngove4 жыл бұрын
Well, that’s what the video shows. I’m asking because you can’t clear coat over this stuff really, and you can’t buff it.

Brad Angove okay perfect. Get it now!! Thank you!! I wanted to make sure I understood! Thanks!

Great video! Very helpful & answered all my questions. Also you did a really nice clean job! I just got a respirator too, do you think it’s important to wear goggles (like ones that seal around your eyes or just clear safety glasses) or is it typically ok to not use one, I just don’t want to go to the hardware store again
@BradAngove5 жыл бұрын
All I can really say about the googles is that I generally don’t wear them.

Great informative video. Is ok to silver spray paint a leather surface? I have a mirror with leather around it?
@BradAngove5 жыл бұрын
You would generally dye leather, not spray it. I think there are paints that work on leather that you can kind of bake on though. I’ve never done it.
