How to Paint Your RC Body - Flat / Dull Finish - Pactra Paint Series EP3

Here's how I use metallic paints on an RC (Polycarbonate / Lexan) with Pactra spray cans. I go over how to fine tune the color/shade of the metallic paints. There's many ways and techniques, but this is how I make the bodies at The RCNetwork look good!

Looks good Rich When you peeled the overspray film off the black section it was so nice! I almost didn't want you to spray the dull coat, the gloss black was beautiful. Overall it looks great with the matte finish contrasting the metallic blue.

Yeah I did a Schumacher Kat 2 in a matte black finish but used the overspray film to create gloss flames 🔥. Kind of the reverse of what you did I guess? The combo can really make some colours and or designs really pop! Great work again Rich, especially for the beginner and great food for thought for the experienced.

You have to be a real good driver for that paint to stay for any time... If it was me that would literally last me about two minutes with my driving!!!

Not really....on a buggy body, the body rarely gets touched. Also, if you are careful with the placement of the flat - it gives depth to the paint and some realism

I'm curious. What would it do to put the dull coat on the inside of the body and then spray the black over that? Probably a dumb question.

Grumpy Old Man RC it would remain shiny, as what will show would be the fresh shiny lexan on the outside.

Kinda figured that was true. Flat paint looses some of its dullness through lexan. Some paint chemist needs to work on this problem. Any way, good video and thanks for doing it.

Meaning do I ever do any color than Blue? I usually lean toward blues because I'm color-blind. I can see blues the best.

How long should I wait to let the blue coats dry before doing the backing coat(black)?

I recommend to wait to where the surface is not tacky, as much as you can. Heat lamps at night, or set it in the sun during the day to expedite drying.

It would probably be best.....the stickers can easily pull the dullcote film

1. Won't the dull coat come off eventually? 2. Can you spray the dull coat on the inside first then color, and get the same effect?

Sure, the dullcote can get nicked/scratched easily, but with a buggy body, it rarely gets hit. If you use the dull cote on areas like vents, ducts, etc on bodies, it gives some depth and realism. I did a large section on this video to show how good it looks. As for spraying the underside, no, the dullcote would have no effect on the underside, as the lexan has the shine

no you can't spray it on the inside because what gives the shine to ur RC is the plastic itself not the paint, so just spraying it on the inside will do nothing,

The metallic blue really comes to life with the flat black .. very cool trick 🖒🖒thankyou for sharing . im curious .... i love the dull coat look and want to try it out on my next body .. is your reasoning for using the dull coat on the external side because it would react with the polycarbonate paint ?

Thanks CA! When ever you spray from the underside, it gives the gloss look from the lexan shell. Adding the dullcote to the exterior reduces the shine of the lexan

I think it would have been a better (more dramatic effect) if you flattened the blue and left the black or even reversed the pattern.

It does great.....until it get's hit, which causes it to flake a bit......but I call it weathering! lol

Yes, but you need to let the dull cote fully cure...as the sticker can pull the dull cote off

Craig nailed it. The gloss comes from the lexan no matter what color/finish you paint the underside. Spraying the external with the dullcote gives the flat look
