A common problem that often arises when overtaking 2 cars travelling slowly is, just as you're about to overtake, or more dangerously as you're overtaking, the first car pulls out to pass the car ahead without signalling or checking they're rear observation causing you to brake very hard . I always assume the car behind might attempt an overtaking manoeuvre but in my long experience, many drivers and riders focus so hard on overtaking that they totally abandon rear observations and don't see a fast rider overtaking them. Watch out for this 😮 very dangerous indeed.

Hi Reg, love your videos. I am about to embark on my journey to become an IAM Advanced Rider. I feel I am in the minority! I‘m quite happy to follow traffic at a reasonable speed. I‘m not talking about sitting at 40 in a 60 but if traffic is moving at 50ish I‘m happy to sit behind. You say no pressure but will you fail if you don‘t take an overtake chance?

Good video. I refer to the two overtakes as flying or standing pass. The former is the ideal method, through good observation and acceleration sense.

I’ve been riding since 1997 and realised recently that all I’m now doing is riding to work and back. Some of these roads look greasy, my respect to you as the first thing I would do is slow down lol

Great video! Love the series! If you break the speed limit when overtaking would this be a fail?

I had this scenario recently where I kept to the speed limit on an overtake and I kept to the speed limit. There was no danger but the instructor commented that do not be concerned if you exceed the speed limit on an overtake if the situation changes. In my scenario a car appeared around the distant bend and was coming fast! As long as I can justify the reason for breaking the speed limit, in my case the situation changed during the overtake and ideally calling for a further acceleration to reach safety and then return to normal speed limit, is acceptable. It made sense to me.

If you overtake before a left hand bend, would you advocate remaining offside into that left hander to maximise view, since you’re out there anyway?

At 6:30 you pulled out to overtake a car where there was a lay-by opposite with another car in it clearly with a driver in and its lights on. How could you be sure it wasn’t about to drive off into your path?

Hi Reg; hope you don't mind but I've always been unsure of the overtake without crossing ths solid white line (think you state confines of the solid white) so have looked it up and a Lawyer on Bennets social said that you are not allowed to overtake if there's a solid white line even if you don't actually cross it; whereabouts did you get your info on that overtaking procedure?? I'm not looking to cause any arguements or criticising you in anyway just wanting to be clear on just this one point. Thank you

In the UK the solid line means you must not cross it.. The overtake is not relevant. Its simply to stop you going onto otherside of the road, if you can pass something safely (that will be rare) without going over the line... Then fine.

Common mistake is that riders don't actually catch the vehicle ahead, so the opportunity never presents itself. They see a vehicle ahead and almost switch in to following mode a long way back.

Any hazard where another vehicle could emerge, you don't overtake until you can be sure there's nothing there. Safety first.

No. Go & read the legislation. The offence is overtaking the vehicle closest to (or stationary at) the crossing.

You may be confusing the other meaning of the zigzag's i.e. no stopping within the full extent of the markings except to allow pedestrians to cross or in queing traffic.

@cgmp5764 In the end I was forced to read the manual, i.e., the Highway Code, here's what it says You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.
