Nice one Reg. Good to hear you being quite explicit about speed limits on test. The old favourite overtaking forever comes up. 😀 I always explain that if you plan to exceed the limit during an overtake, it is not a good overtake for an IAM test. However, I also add that if you get it wrong and you need to exceed the limit to return to safety, then do so, and we'll talk about it afterwards. Watching someone drag out on overtake "because I'm being observed" can be quite scary. 😮 I don't know how you car observers/examiners can sit there!

Yes, if one needs to speed to overtake safely then the overtake was seriously mis-judged in the first place. Which should be very heavily frowned upon during any advanced test.

4:50 Those automatic wipers drive me potty. There should be an advanced wiper test - BMW would fail. Amazed you use the Auto function Reg, I hate it in my F22

It is very unfortunate when legality and safety are not always possible at the same time. For example, in my country, it is common to have roads, which are clearly designed to be driven on at speeds of at least 80 kmh and higher, but the legal speed limit is 50 kmh. The traffic moves at much higher speeds, and it forces you to speed. Otherwise you could be making an unsafe situation. Because of this drivers don't respect speed limits, and speed everywhere. This is why it is essential for local governments to post *reasonable* speed limits. This is one thing I hate the most about roads in my country.

On bikes we were taught to "make progress" - ie get up to and drive at or near the speed limit when safe to do so etc etc. I know the speed limit isn't a target but not "making progress" was marked down - you know what I mean! I see you are driving at 50 in a national (60mph) and I was wondering if the teaching was different for advanced car drivers? I certainly don't drive at or near the limit many times - especially with kids on board etc, but I was thinking of trying for an advanced car driving ticket. Thanks for a wonderful educational video. The matrix signs on motorways often show a 50 limit several miles in advance of a hazard which, sometimes is on the opposite carriageway. With most people ignoring this 50 restriction and carrying on at 70, I would say it's compromising safety by travelling at 50 and causing a mobile bottleneck. What are your thoughts please?

great video! Very clear about speed limits (on test)... I have a bad habit of letting the car exceed the limit by 1 or 2 mph (on the speedo). Is this a fail? Should I be aiming to drive at (eg) 25 mph so that I have a margin if my speed creeps up, or do I just need to try harder ro keep my speed constant?

Crystal clear Reg and thank you (again). A very important video. Until recently I had thought the sensible thing to do on an overtake was to move quickly past the vehicle I was overtaking. This reduces the TED (Time Exposed to Danger). I focussed on that more than keeping the speed below the legal limit. To me it seemed safer. (Obviously the relative speed versus the vehicle being overtaken needs to be sensible, as should taking account of any other potential hazards.) I wish I had had this video back then, because I would then have learned that I need to keep to the posted speed limits to be legal! So I am out practising and relearning my overtaking technique in preparation for (I hope) sitting an IAM Master test later this year. Every day a school day! Are you ever in Northern Ireland Reg? I am hardly ever in England, but I'd love a day out driving with you. It's definitely on my bucket list!
