Hi, very useful video thank you. I am considering a career change and becoming a driving instructor. I know it is a very open question to ask, but how hard was the journey to becoming an instructor for you. It appears that only around 35% of those that start actually become a fully qualified instructor which seems a rather daunting statistic!
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest Жыл бұрын
Hi, When i trained it was 'easier' in my opinion. This is because the part 3 test, test of instructional ability, changed, and part 3 is debatably the most difficult part. Part 3 use to be with the examiner role-playing a student, they would stick strictly to a pre-choosen subject, this would make it easier to know what to expect. They would also not do anything dangerous, so easier to manage things. Now you need to deliver a lesson to a real learner, they will try to kill you! Not on purpose of course. So you need to: - Plan the lesson incredibly well, making sure they don't get overwhelmed but are still learning, know your area like the back of your hand so you can calmly and clearly give them support. You also need to be very flexible and be able to change the plan as needed and vary your level of help to suit. - Manage the risk, you need to always know exactly what help the student needs to make sure they get it right and don't get confused and cause danger, often people underestimate how hard driving is, and thing they think are 'obvious' are 100% NOT, and if not manage correctly will lead to the learner doing something very dangerous, if that happens the lesson is not correct. You need to be really really good, if you don't plan well, don't give the correct level of, let something dangerous happen then its not good enough. That's just it in summary, but it is much harder than it sounds. It takes the correct person, someone who is calm and control, but can be flexible and use the voice well to control the situation, and also can involve the learner in the process through good Q&A. If you are the correct person it still takes a lot of hard work and commitment, not just during training sessions, but also outside of them with lots of private practice and research / learning.

18:06 - Although of course I agree with what you're saying here, I feel that in a video specifically about the Highway Code it's not overly pedantic to mention. You say driving at night without headlights is "pretty dangerous and pretty illegal." Bizarrely, and for seemingly no good reason, HWC Rule 113 says you MUST use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. Whilst I would never suggest someone to drive at night without headlights, it is not always illegal. A good thing for learners to be aware of for their own theory tests.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
Whilst I am aware of that rule I suppose I don't even think of that rule as it is a bit ridiculous imo. I can't think of any reason why the law would say you can drive around a street light area at night without headlights on. There are many rules that don't make exact sense: - You MUST NOT park on the right at night time, unless in a designated bay. Whilst this is understandable I you are on a main road and you are parked on your own, as oncoming vehicle will not see your parked car easily due to no reflectors at the front, it does not make sense if you are parking on a side road in-between several other vehicles, on these roads you will often need to park on the right. - It is NOT illegal to overtake on the left, aka undertake. But I would still not do it, the amount of driver who do not check their left mirror before moving to the left lane really make is quite dangerous.

Quick question, I have a HGV license and did a 2 part theory test and hazard perception test which was last year. What I wanted to know is the ADI theory tests different from the HGV theory test or is it the same test as it has the same pass mark
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Not they are completely different tests, well some of the test is the same, such as how hazard perception test works and certain multiple choice questions, but pass mark is probably different (don't know what is is for HGV one) But main difference is on the ADI test they ask you about instructional techniques, how tests will work for those with physical or mental disabilities, plus specific questions about DVSA publications. e.g. "When giving a route direction what does A.D.I. mean?" A: Alert Direct Inform "What does POM stand for?" A: Prepare Observe Move "What restrictions would someone with colour blindness have on their driving licence?" A: None That sort of thing, things that a HGV driver will not need to know, but a driving instructor will need to know

They have always done this, they only publish a certain amount of questions on the apps etc., a proportion of questions are kept secret and only used on the real theory tests, same applies to learner theory test. The idea being they don't want people just learning the questions and answers, but also having broad knowledge, all the information you need is suppose to be in the DVSA books, which i believe i mention in this video. However there so seem to be a few questions where the answers are not even in the books.

Keep a distance so you can stop within your thinking distance?? As explained in the video that would not make sense, thinking distance is how long it takes for you to realise you need to brake, does not involve any braking. If you only kept your thinking distance you would hit the vehicle in front just as you had your foot on the brake. You need to keep thinking distance + braking distance, which is your overall stopping distance.

Hi mate, love the video! what’s the best route to take to practice and get a pass with all 3 categories to becoming a driving instructor. I see companies like AA which charge high amounts to help get you ready for each exam. Is this something you would recommend ?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
Consider this: For part 1, you will need: - Highway Code (£2.50) - Know Your Traffic Signs (£5) - Driving: The Essential Skills (£15) - Driving Instructors Handbook (£15) - An app to practice questions (£20, they are more expensive than learner theory test apps) - Total cost about £57.50 For part 2, you will need: - 6-10 hours of lessons, typically an independent trainer will charge between £35 - £40 an hour for instructor training. - Total cost about £210 - £350 (assuming lower rate) For part 3, you will need: - Most people tend to do about 40 hours of training, assuming independent trainer rate of £35 - £40 that would be £1,400 - £1,600. Total cost around £1,867.50, but could be more depend on how much training you need. I do training for AA | BSM and they courses are fairly competitive. AA is £2,000 for 50 hours in car one-to-one, 2 hour intro session, 12 hours part 2, 36 hours part 3. Unlimited online classrooms discussion various topics for part 3. Hard copies of books supplied plus 6 months subscription to website to practice part 1 questions. Facebook group and other ways to support you. BSM is £1,000 for a 2 hour one-to-one part 2 assessment session (additional hours need to be purchased separately), 3 full days in class with VR headsets to introduce you to part 3 stuff, 3 full days in car two-to-one (two trainees, one trainer) to work on part 3 skills. All initial part 3 training done in a space of 3 weeks. A hard copy of driving essential skills, and PDF's of Highway Code and know your traffic signs, other books you need to buy yourself. 6 months subscription to website to practice theory questions. Also same virtual classrooms as AA course. Both courses do not have any terms and conditions that mean you have to have passed the previous part before moving onto next part, you paid for it so do all the training as and when you want. Both courses offer trainee licence so when you have passed part 2 and done 40 hours of part 3 training you can apply for the trainee licence via a franchise and start earning money, but more importantly put your skills in practice with real learners to improve your chances of passing the part 3. Not sure what other driving schools offer, but I do feel AA | BSM offer some good packages. AA is essential an all inclusive course and very personal and tailored to you. BSM is a cheaper course as not all inclusive, you will need to spend extra on some books and training sessions. It is also very intensive and no one-to-one training for part 3, so not for everyone. If it was me I would go with AA, it is likely to cost you a similar amount with an independent trainer, but you will not get the extra support of virtual classrooms etc, plus you will not be given the books.

@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kerry, Have you seen my videos on the hazard perception, using the 3 click technique? As often experienced drivers click too early on the HP due to anticipating the hazard, but the HP is designed for novice drives and does NOT reward anticipation, it rewards reactions (i.e. 5 points when you need to coming off the gas and braking) Regarding the questions you are doing the right thing by using books AND app. It is also important you FULLY understand the questions / answers, for example do you now EXACTLY how ABS works? Or just that is gives you the ability to steer and brake at the same time. Of course you may well understand fully, can't judge, but just something to consider. I need to do a video on ADI Part 1 tricky questions, but topics that often catch people out of mechanical questions (ABS, ESP, disc / drum brakes, brake fade, engine braking etc). Also questions of ROTE and Gestault are quite common and catch people out, as do questions on disability test centres and how the examiner mark coasting on the test report. So maybe look up some of those things?

Have you ever hear of people saying " I have plateaued"? it means they feel like they have learnt as much as they can learn and are 'stuck' at the same stage with their learning. If someone has plateaued, got stuck and feels like learning has stopped, then it can be good to give the subject / skill they have plateaued a rest, to give to learner time to process things. Also it can work if you break down the subject into skills and just focus on a specific skills, for example merging onto busy roundabouts, just focus on the skill of moving off quickly by doing 'bank robbery getaways' on a quiet road, or get the learner in the passenger seat (so no need to focus on controlling the car) and get them to look for gaps (you can also do this by standing near a busy roundabout a looking for gaps while on foot). I think the official answer is something to do with breaking it down into manageable chunks? But can't remember. If you have any tricky ones like this would you mind posting it to this video? So it can help other, and so I can then make a compilation video of tricky questions.

It depends what exam you mean? I suspect you mean the learner theory test? This video is based on the ADI Part 1 theory test. Many of the questions on this video will be on both theory tests, but maybe not all of them. Make sure you subscribe to my channel as at the moment I am doing a competition to win a £50 Amazon voucher..... Further details here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIbUiHyqjsRsra8

This is all well,I recently did the ADI theory test last week & failed by one mark due to there being approx 7 questions in the test that were not in any of the learning material I had,I was hitting 98/99% on all of my mock tests & felt more than prepared for the test until these unexpected questions popped up,where can you get the unexpected questions & answers from ?

The DVSA have never published all questions on their apps / approved software. The reason being you should not just be using the apps and learning the questions / answers. You ALSO need an excellent knowledge of the following four publications: Highway Code - amzn.to/3e6wGoK Driving: Essential Skills - amzn.to/3t9FGhh Know Your Traffic Signs - amzn.to/2Rem8v1 The Driving Instructors Handbook - amzn.to/3e9CIoB This is also confirmed on the DVSA website when they recommend how to revise for the exam.

I've been having the same problem using multiple apps and getting very high pass marks on them all then sat the actual test got 86 overall but failed by one mark on band 2. Think I'll have to bring out the highway code and other stuff and get it passed next time.

Driving Test Success tends to be the most popular, as it has up to date questions. www.drivingtestsuccess.com/product/adi-part-1-theory-test-online-training I know they have an app for the learner theory test, but not 100% sure about part 1, I would like to assume they have an app for it, but maybe do a bit of investigating.

It is not you, this is quite common. The DVSA keep a bunch of questions 'top secret', so you only ever see them on the real test. The only way to get them correct it to have EXCELLENT all round knowledge and understanding, gained from the DVSA books and your own research OR if people try to remember the questions and let people like me know so I can make a video. This playlist has some examples of questions people struggle with, often because they have never seen them before. kzbin.info/aero/PL8-cAqyDz_ZY2db6qyZXvqDW4r_YyiUTe

I believe they changed the rules to keep these questions secret. When I did my ADI Part 1 in 2011 I got 100/100, I spent most evenings going through practice questions, ensuring I read them carefully and understood them, did this until I was getting 100/100 6 or 7 times in a row (of course not 6 or 7 mock tests a day, doing this over a week or two). I also went through the DVSA books high lightly key points

@@UKDrivingTest and the expiration date on the ADi badge means they need to do a standards check to get a new badge?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
no, the expiry date just means you need to do a new DBS and then pay for another badge which lasts 4 years. A standards checks should, in theory, be conducted at least once per badge, but will not always be at the end of the badge, it depends on when you are due a standards check which depends on when you last one was, how you did (sooner for low grade B, further away from high grade A) and also availability of examiners in your area. Of course with COVID standards checks have been put on the back burners as learner tests, part 2 and part 3 are being prioritised (quite rightly). My last standards check was 2015

Hi, I failed my adi theory test 2 weeks ago, I remember a couple of questions that I can’t find on any mock test or in any books. 1. What do you do if your are instructing someone and they get road rage and start abusing another driver? 2. What mechanism of the car will you be marked down for if you are coasting? I would of said clutch but please could your confirm this. 😀
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
99% of questions are in the apps or books, you just need to be looking in the correct place. the other 1% accounts for the rare acceptions. Check out my part 1 playlist for help on the more tricky questions. kzbin.info/aero/PL8-cAqyDz_ZY2db6qyZXvqDW4r_YyiUTe But in short: 1. Not sure what the books says my common sense would say to park up and accept their point of view and opinion, but don't directly agree with it, and then help them understand that other driver may make mistakes or drive poorly for various reasons, perhaps they are under time pressures, perhaps they are stressed, perhaps they just make a genuine mistake, perhaps they did not realise. Then get the pupil to relate to this, have they even felt stressed? Have they have been running late? Have they ever made a mistake? 2. Gear, coasting comes under gears. In the above videos it goes through this question including where to find the answer.
