How to patch and repair a large hole in a wood floor

This ancient heater vent grill had to be replaced and patched before installing vinyl flooring. We create a wooden plug and supports, and finish off the repair using Durham's Rock Hard Wood Putty, a great product.

That's your vent, I think and it's there for a reason. What do you think? I have went like that, but outside, and they provide ventilation to under the floor area. Without it condensation would build up, leading to the wood starting to rot. Correct me please if I am wrong. Thank you. 🥀

Yes, I think it’s from an old vent. There is a fireplace in the basement that is no longer connected to anything. The house is 100+ years old.

@@fixthishouse3303 yes, my house is 155 years old and people cared about ventilation so much, providing several in just one room. Sometimes I'm tempted to block them off as I can feel the draft . You did a good job! With old houses our work is never finished. We're slaves! 😂

We covered it with a waterproof laminate plank flooring.

You cut the support pieces across the grain? They are far weaker this way.

They're cosmetic support bars. It's mostly to support the plug from falling through. They're covering it in a vinyl plank after that. So, that support should be sufficient.

@@corney8807 "Cosmetic supports" is a new one to me. There is just no reason to do a worse repair instead of just cutting the wood 90 degrees differently and making it structurally sound.

why in the world would you cover up original hardwood with new flooring?

It was sub flooring from the 20s.

Certainly doesn't look like sub flooring from that era. Sub flooring back then was ship lap and it was usually laid with gaps in between boards. This flooring looks like 3/4 T&G pine flooring

@Ultimate Dab There were cracks that let you see into the basement. Also, pine is soft wood… not hardwood.

@@fixthishouse3303 I understand. In a couple years after the Plastic flooring wears out look into doing a proper restoration of the original pine flooring. It's not cheap but lasts longer than the garbage made today.

@@ultimatedab743I think the new laminate flooring will come up with little damage to the wood underneath because it isn’t nailed down. We do short term rentals there and the laminate was a quick, affordable and easy-to-clean solution. So far, it’s wearing well. Thank you for your comments.
