The Home Mender, Dustin Luby, shows us how to repair that unsightly rot hole in your floor to prepare it for a new. Sub floor issues can be dangerous! You can fall right through the floor. Cut out the subfloor by squaring out the damaged floor, securing the framing or adding floor joists as needed. Install the new 3/4 sub floor, then top it with your finished floor. Replace that rotted floor. Easy! You can do it! Home Mender.

This video saved my ass big time. What turned from a simple bathroom remodel to finding out the sub floor under the toilet and surrounding the tub was TOTALLY rotted I was petrified to tackle it scared of doing it wrong and someone would fall through the floor while doing their business on the can, but this video seriously calmed me down and I realized it’s not rocket science. Since then there has been a few more instances where I had to repair some subfloor and I ALWAYS come back to this for a refresher. This guy is pure knowledge around the house and teaches it in a fun, super easy-to follow way.

Thanks for the video. Was replacing the flooring in the laundry area of my house. Previous owner did not go far enough out when they had a leak, so I found subfloor rot a little further down than original repair. Glad to know I had done it right. Some things in home repair are just as simple as they seem. It's like you've said, you just have to have the confidence. Wish I had found this channel when I first bought my house. So many repairs that you have done, that I've had to do already. Your videos are way more straight forward than some of the other instructions I've gotten.

Good tutorial. A few comments/recommendations. If subfloor was glued and nailed could be problematic getting the subfloor to release. Also when cutting along the center line of the floor joist, be sure to remove all the nails holding the subfloor down otherwise you could trash your circular saw blade. Usually the subfloor is nailed down with ring-shank nails which are a bitch to get out. Here's an alternative method. Instead of attempting to cut the centerline of the floor joist, cut along the inside edge of it with a circular saw finishing with a recipro-saw then "sister" a 2 x 6 joist to the existing as shown on other walls. This also is a more forgiving cut if you're not on the centerline of the joist giving you an 1.5 inch to screw down the subfloor replacement etc. mi dos pesos (.00002US)

hey kozmick! great suggestions!..Ive found unless you have a cats paw or some other sweet nail removal tool, its takes too much time and effort to remove the nails. i usually dont mind trashing the saw blade to get it right the first time. Thanks so much for commenting and watching!

Great work. At 2:45 you make an excellent observation and comment, "Now this board is sound" referring to the joist, but I thought I would add some emphasis to the need of checking that joist because you're a pro and made that determination quickly. When the subfloor is that rotten it is good to thoroughly check if the joist is sound. In my house, when I removed the subfloor I found that the leak that caused the subfloor to rot also rotted out the joist and it had to be reinforced by sistering (a whole process that maybe Dustin could do a video on). Just a thought.

No subfloor in my house. The tongue-and-groove oak rests on the joists. It makes me a little nervous, but it's lasted a hundred years this way.

I have the same situation. We currently have some rot/termite damage on several joists in the crawl space. Pros will have to do the joist work because of access issues and settled foundation. Not looking forward to it!

Great video. It really just saved me from getting scammed by this guy that has no idea what he's doing. I have a hole in my hallway just out side my bathroom door and the floor around it is sorta weak and he told me I needed a piece of plywood?! I think I may find someone else to look at it.I'd hate for one f my grand babies to be running through there and get hurt! Thanks again!
