Hi again Shane. Just a thought. For those out here who don't have access to a leakdown tester, what do you think about the old school method of pouring some engine oil inside the cylinder, through the spark plug hole, and then measure the compression against the previous measure, before putting the oil in. If you get an improvement in PSI, wouldn't this tell you that there some leaking taking place in the rings? If, on the other hand, no PSI improvement was to be found after pouring in the oil, the leak would be in the valves. Granted the PSI was below engine specs to begin with. Naturally this won't let you check leaks other than rings or valves, like the one coming from the crank, like in the video. Thanks again for yet another very educational video. My owns a motorcycle shop and just told me he just keeps piston on BDC to check leak down and no worries about piston jumping around , he said it works just fine... no need to have piston on TDC. if it leaks it leaks... but i always use my snap-on tester correct by having piston at TDC...

Good info here, what I will add to this is I use my ultra sonic leak detector to zero in on finding any air passing instead of the soapy water.

Have a Robinair model, not to expensive and work well on vacuum and pressure leaks, also can find bad bearings with it when the probe is installed, handy tool for sure

I understand how compression rings expand with compressed air getting behind the ring and pushing out to seal the ring race with the cylinder wall, but the fact that the ring is split and not continuous, I still don't understand how there's a seal.

There is a ring which is continuous i have them on my honda race car engine 1994 GSR B18-C1.. THERE called Total sealed power rings out of Arizona ... and what is happening with the rings is the gap you are talking about is only .004 gap per inch okay. so a 4 inch piston would have a max of .016 gap. now the gap is rotating around they say so it will change location on the piston and car engine pistons have 2 rings and a oil ring too... but what is also happening is the pressure from the compression will get behind the rings and push them away from the piston to seal them to the cylinder walls remember that... now i have seen rings on motorcycles that have a locator pin in the ring land that touch's the ring and keeps it from moving or spinning around the piston, i have that pin in the piston ring land on my weed eater because i burned up the piston and had to install a new piston and i saw a tiny pin to line and stop the rings from moving. crazy...

as a 30 year harley wrench you test the motor cold then hot i have seen shovel heads with 25% leak down get it hot 6 % leak down know why it had low silicon pistons lot of piston running fit ! there are a lot of factors
