Did my DSG relatively recently with the kit from Deutsche Auto Parts that you did with them. Gravity filler was time consuming haha. I found cutting a small hole in the fluid bottle helps with pressure building up and taking even longer.

My wife's 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI, and my step-daughter's 2012 Jetta TDI Sedan are both *exactly* the same as this. (Well -- almost exactly the same. Their cars have the Torx T-25 screws holding the air box together. 8 of them. Because apparently VW *really* wanted that air-box to be held together well. LOL) But you've gotta love the fact that VW kept this exact same setup in production for multiple years and models. Makes servicing *so* much easier!

I'm watching this video as I'm about to attempt a DSG service, it looks very useful so far. One thing that made me cringe though, undoing the allen bolt next to the battery with a metal ratchet. I've always worked on the assumption that the battery gets removed first regardless of the job. It would only need a small slip to connect ground with live. (A bit later on you're tightening the ground connection and the ratchet actually touches the positive, it's only because you used a rubber covered ratchet that stopped it from making quite a mess)

It would have been nice if you had installed a Battery Hold Down Clamp for the qwner, this can be a real hazard in a roll-over accident if not fitted. Also the Air Box and associated pipe work needed a good clean up, change the filter etc. Attention to the small details highlights a good mechanic from the rest, or in modern parlance "Vehicle Technition"

Hey Charles! Thanks for all the vids. You're a great resource for just about everything I've had questions on regarding my Passat B6. I heard you state that you always remove the negative battery terminal first and reinstall it last (which is the correct practice) but then in the video you bounce back and forth between the 2 terminals with your wrench. Just as troubling is that your wrench was long enough to connect between the terminals. Clearly you're and experienced mechanic who is well aware of the risks of inadvertently connecting the 2 terminals and you took the requisite care not to.For the rest of your viewers though, the practice of removing the negative cable first is to eliminate the risk of contact by the wrench with surrounding metal parts. Once the negative cable is REMOVED (not just loose), then the positive cable can be worked safely with no risk in case of inadvertent contact by the wrench with adjacent metal parts. Additional safety can be achieved by ONLY using tools shorter than the distance between the battery terminals.

If you change the fluid while the trans is still fairly warm. (Remove the intake and battery) Then warm your trans fluid up to 100F+(It will cool slightly as you fill your trans). Not only will the fluid drain into the trans faster but it's already very close to the correct operating temperature(and expansion). Just let the excess flow out of the inner drain plug and shift the gears while running, install the outer plug and your done.

Question. I've seen other transmission fluid changes where by the oil drain plug is removed first along with the measuring nosel thingy if your car has it. Then, loosening the DSG filter and letting the oil just drain out. Then grab your self a sandwich, watch some KZbin clips of bad drivers and come back to the rest of the service. Can this be done this way? I just think it's my preference since it removes the need for clean up of any oil spilling out when removing the filter. Almost creates a vacuum in the trans to let all the oil out. Just wonderin'. Thanks anyway for the great vid.

Yeah, I thought the same thing, myself... Let the dealer do it -- too much of a pain in the ass to do it myself. Then my local dealer raised their price to $499 for a damn DSG service, and I decided I could do it myself. And it really wasn't anywhere near as bad as I'd thought it would be. And when the timing belt needed doing at 120K miles, I went ahead and did that, too -- that was a *much* bigger pain, but still doable with the right tools. Even with the special tools, I still saved like $500 off what the dealer wanted for the timing belt. TL;DR -- all modern cars are complicated, but you *can* work on them if you're determined enough.

this is not related to this video but i watch tour videos and before i bought my 12 jetta tdi and 14 tiguan manual. first i tell you the story bought the 14 tiguan from the vw dealership i used to work at 2 months ago as a parts guy. i was laid off because this virus. since i bought it had noise in with the transmission when the clutch was disengaged in natural, more of a clacking sound when the clutch is engaged it goes away. i was thinking the dmf but the shop foreman tells me its normal. im wondering your opinion. my tdi is manual and does not make a noise like this

Great how to ;) V.a.g says that oil must be in optimum temperature...if is to high its not recomended to drain oil.... so we have to wait to cool down... To see temperature we must have a diagnostic.... In private I have Ross Tech and on my yob we have Odis (official v.a.g service) Temperature of the oil is important to save mechatronic components. ;)
