The Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission, developed by VW, traces its history back to the early 2000s when it was first introduced in the MK4 R32 in Europe. This transmission combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic, DSG quickly gained popularity and became a benchmark for dual-clutch transmission technology in the automotive industry.
Today we tear apart the 6 Speed DSG Transmission out of our MK5 R32!
This Trans had problems being stuck in 2nd gear, would go into limp mode with the PRNDS lights flashing, had a loud clicking noise while idle, and had a nasty whine noise on deceleration. We had a feeling that our R32 would need a transmission, so we pulled this one out and saved it for this video! we wanted to tear apart this DSG to both see how these transmissions work and find the damage left behind!

I've had a VW 6 spd manual in an MK8 GTI and recently a DSG in an MK8 R. The DSG is an amazing piece of engineering and as much as I love manuals, I feel the DSG is the proper transmission for the Golf R. As an $800 USD option it's a steal.

No kidding. VW didn't put enough development into the manual anyway. The DSG works so well. As much as I thought about getting a MK8 GTI manual, there's nothing wrong with my MK7.5 DSG car and so I stage 1 tuned and did the DSG tune. It's amazing what these trans can handle just by a tune. Fluid changes aren't too expensive considering. VW dumped a lot of money into development of the DSG and it shows.

Yours probably had its diff rivet shooting through the box's case, it's one of the multitude issues with this tranny, and probably the worst one.

BUT, as people have mentioned and in this video, cars like to lurch from a stop, it being cold can make it act weird, and if you're not ready for a high repair cost if it ever needs to be taken care of, don't buy one, stick with a manual. Even with my GTI being taken care of, and having both of it's DSG services being done on time, it still likes to act weird.

My mom has an 2015 A3 1.4 TSI hatchback, which she got new and has been with it since, back in Brazil. This model has the DQ200 transmission (dry clutch DSG), and it is pretty amazing, but it indeed has that infamous unrealiabiity history due to being 'fragile'. This year the trans failed all of a sudden, then she took it to Audi and they covered the services for its replacement, given she did all the services regularly there. It took them 2 months to repair it (mostly due to having to wait for parts to come) and the bill was around 8k USD (rough convertion to the 40k BRL bill), which is nuts considering the car is estimated at around 75k BRL, so more than half the value of it.... Had Audi not covered the repair, it would certainly be scrapped. Apart from that, the car still looks and runs great tho.

11:54 is there a possibility this parking pawl could fail due to low transmission fluid. And would doing a oil service fix this problem. As i suspect this part failed due to low dsg oil on my vehicle im using bcoz of low oil it is now making it harder for the part to disengage. My vehicle can go into D but move forward a slight inch then locks. (I have no faults on box only says low transmission fluid) .

How do they know which gear is the "next gear"? It could be up or down. I'm assuming based on RPM?

Great and timely video. Bottom line: are these DSG units bad? I hear that they are very jerky in city driving and are best at freeway speeks. I was thinking of buy a '24 Tiguan, but I don't want headaches in the future. Happy holidays and Happy New Year. Thanks you.

They are not great in city traffic. The mech box does not like unpredictable on again off again throttle, like queuing in crawling traffic, idiots doing surprising things in front of you, etc. Jerks all the time. Queues uphill are horrible and you will wish you had a slush box to mush along.

THERE IS Always "BUT" with VW. Tiguan have DQ500 wich is best DSG ( for heavy cars),but some have DQ500 and inside is mechatronic from DQ381 ( wich can have dtc P13500,P13600). Now DQ381 is GEN2,hope that this problems are resolved). DSG dont like too much Heat, after 250 miles driving is good to stop and cool down oil in DSG. Some tuners Like TVS have option in maps for termal management wich can be good. Because this problems wich All DSG have for now best oil is MOTUL Multi. Also for high temperature in engines Motul 8100 (Ester oils "Group V").

I have a 2019...not Tiguan but the Seat equivalent (still VW). Not jerky. And unlike the manual version of the car, the adaptive cruise control works right down to 0mph, aka "traffic jam mode". And there's an auto-coast function to save fuel. It drives nice. Still feels like a bit of a lottery because it would be so expensive if it failed. But I can keep renewing the warranty.

"non-serviceable" what are we supposed to do if the dsg craps out on us? Are we having to buy a new one? Or risking buying a used one from the junkyard? Are they supposed to last forever with scheduled fluid changes? Thanks for putting together all these great vids!

Is there any good way to diagnose a DSG box without stripping? Mines for example slips when changing into 2, 4 and 6th only by 200-300 revs apart from that drives normal no other slippage, it does have a TCU tune as it modded and I am having a hardtime seeing if software is at fault or hardware.
@Deutscheautoparts
@Deutscheautoparts 5 ай бұрын
Probably a clutch pack issue but diagnosing it specifically is very hard. Generally most DSG problems are either the mech unit or the clutch pack. Pinpointing which one is often not possible. This means you have to either attempt to replace the parts or put a used transmission in. As vehicles get higher mileage we generally recommend a known good used trans as it’s often the most cost effective way to guarantee the vehicle is repaired.

I think the 2004 diesel beetle with a DSG was was actually delivered in the US before the MK5 GTI. I was selling VW’s at the time and distinctly remember getting a TDI beetle for the lot that came with a DSG well before any MK5 GTI’s showed up.

DSG is honestly really reliable, even the mech units have become alot better with time, rarely see any issues with them at the shop anymore compared to what it used to be like. Recently had a freak outlier DSG in a brand new Caddy (not even delivered yet) with a bad clutch pack but thats about it. otherwise if we ever have DSG issues at the shop it is usually on the smaller ones with the dry clutch packs or something older coming in to just diagnos it.

hello sir, I've got a 7 speed dry clutch DSG coupled to a 1.0 TSI engine (car is from 2017). The last 6 months I noticed the car is not as smooth as it once was when driving a low speeds, especially when it's slipping the clutch in 2nd gear at very low speeds, the whole thing doesn't seem to be happy and there is a slight (slight for now) noise coming from what I think is the gearbox. Should I get this thing checked (I always go to the main dealer for regular servicing)? At first I thought maybe the clutch or dual mass flywheel (or both) need replacing but now that I see ball bearings being destroyed in the gearbox I'm getting more worried. I've got 65k miles on the clock. Any advice? Thanks in advance. The car drives absolutely fine otherwise, it's just at low speeds. Also it can be very clunky on the downshift from 3rd to 2nd and from 2nd into first (it kind of depends how hard you're decelerating). Thanks!
@soapmcsoapface1787
@soapmcsoapface1787 5 ай бұрын
@@SlosII for the driveability and clunky gear changes there is a procedure from factory that your dealer should be able to find. The dry clutch DSGs can also be a little clunky when cold because they do intentionally slip the clutches when getting going from standing when they are cold to heat up the clutches faster. As for the noise its hard to really say much without checking it since alot of stuff can make noise, but bearing issues are really uncommon, never had a DSG with bearing issues that i can remember. As a tech i would say advise with your local shop and try and detail it as much as possible for them. Stuff like when/how it happens so like is it when the car is cold or up to temp, outside temp, weather conditions, road conditions in general, certain maneuvers. Basically anything you can think of to narrow it down. Or even have a tech ride along and show what happens can be a good thing.

Can't believe they don't make replacement parts. Basically you'll be throwing out a transmission that was fine apart from a single bearing. But then again for the VW group, it's not really a surprise. The one question I have though, it can select two gears, one that you're driving with and a future gear. How does it know if the next gear change will be up or down?! Thanks for the fun video!

I can’t say for certain but it’s probably programmed to look for user input and body movement. If you’re on the gas pedal it knows that you’re going to continue moving up through the gears so it queues next gear, if you remove your foot from the accelerator, it can likely assume you’re going to slow down and it needs to queue a lower gear - if I were to guess - I’m sure there are a ton of other sensor input and programming things but what I’ve explained is probably 80% of it.

Got a mk5 gti with one, it's all in the software, if you downshift while cruising it will take a good second to downshift and it will be a bit harsh. If you downshift while braking or starting to accelerate it's fast and smooth as.
