madmat2001 hey, is a crossover recommended in a coaxial speaker??
@madmat20017 жыл бұрын
Not just recommended but required. Most but not all coaxials will feature a crossover of some sort with the cheapest being literally part of the speaker and nearly impossible to upgrade or defeat if you're wanting to use an outboard unit.

what if I just have a single full range speaker?
@wilhelmjohansson16436 жыл бұрын
@Stranger Depends on driver and enclosure.
@anothertav6 жыл бұрын
no, with a single full range speaker you only have one driver, so there is nothing to cross between. a cross over is used only when there are two or more drivers.

Hi! I'm gonna build my own speaker thanks to your inspiration. I have some Qs about the crossover : 1. Can i use a single crossover for both channel of the amp ? In details, will the Sure Electronics AA-AB32189 2x100W connect both of its channel to the single Dayton Audio XO2W-2K rated at 300W ?? 2. Is 2K the right freq for Dayton Audio DC28F-8 1-1/8" and Dayton Audio DC200-8 ? 3. ( not related but ) Is 100W RMS amp overkill for a 50-60W RMS driver ?

I have 6 bookshelf cerwin vega speakers.(2 way) I always have a need to hear better High end. aswell a low end. and good speakers today are not cheap. can I add an "active crossover to each speaker" ? or is there a different method? I ordered 2 pairs of DS18 PRO-TW120B. ( which had high ratings) on Amazon. (have not arrived yet) I feel like the midrange is overwhelming the sound... so I started reading about Active crossovers. ( which I know Nothing about) I had a really OLD realistic radio shack tweeters. and they did help a lot. but one died. . BTW. I have a variety of speakers that I have not used in 20 years. some are still in the box' 1 pair of Huge Polk audio tower speakers. 1 pair of floor standing Infinity speakers. 1 large Cerwin Vega center speaker. with 4 x 5 inch woofers + tweeter. 1 large Polk audio Center speaker. ( which I never used ) I was busy working and had no time on my hands. but now I'm retired and I want to make some use of some of the smaller speakers. cause the large Tower speakers are to big for my room. I'm also using a Very old Onkyo receiver which was the top of the line back in 1999. model number TX-DS838.... has NO bluetooth and NO HDMI.. its hooked up to a brand new Samsung 4K flagship TV. and PC... with Optical audio cable. which is my only option at this time. thank you so much for your awesome videos . looking forward to hear what can be done?

This is great! A question I had though; say you wanted to add an L-pad attenuator to a horn/tweeter in your crossover, how would you calculate the wattage of resistor needed for the L-pad? Would the wattage of these resistors be relative to the frequency that is being crossed over? E.G, if you crossed the tweeter over at 5kHz, could you get away with lower wattage resistors (and vice versa)? I'm looking to build a crossover for a 4x10 cabinet with a 1" horn. The horn is rated at 85watts past 5kHz, so do I need to make the L-pad attenuator resistors' wattage equal to 85 watts?

Your videos have not only inspired me, but have provided me with the knowledge and confidence I need to begin my builds. As per your advice, I'm going to start with kits and then inevitably begin designing my own. Are their any specific kits you'd recommend to a total novice? I'm willing to spend a decent buck, especially if the end product will look and sound great. I'd love to get your thoughts, but in the mean time, THANK YOU for the fantastic videos. I'm thrilled to be a subscriber and new fan of Salvage Audio. -Nick

I'd like to ask, I have a JBL DSP amp with built in active cross over (Factory installed premium audio package) but recently purchased JBL Club Component Speakers which come with passive cross overs. Would it be a good idea to ditch the included passive cross overs in favor of the DSP amp since it already has built in cross over functionality? PS: the amp has an impedance of 2 Ohms while the speakers are rated 3 Ohms

It seems when bassy parts of a song plays, the background or higher frequencies isn't heard. I believe i need a crossover. Now, i could use a Passive Radiator, but can i use an actual powered sub? so i have this total noob question. im just starting building speakers. for my first project, i want to build a bluetooth portable speaker. i want to build it as cheap as possible. i am using one of those bluetooth amps from ebay. for my speakers i want to use an old computer speaker set i have laying around. they sound pretty good, only they use an external subwoofer. that woofer is ofcourse way too big for the portable speaker, so i'd like to increase the bass on the small speakers. ive seen somewhere that if you hook up capacitors and resistors to the speaker, it filters out the mid. would this work?

Passive crossover components are lossy, so some of the power from the amp is dissipated as heat, they're not a viable option for high power systems, it's quite hard and costly to achieve high filter slopes, driver characteristics have to be considered, zobel networks, level matching, phase issues, inductors and driver coupling. These are the issues with passive.

Absolutely! All great info, thank you! This is simply an "intro" video series and not an in-depth video on the pros and cons of passive crossovers.

I used a Tang Band W6-1130SIF 6.5" with (I think) a 2" doubled flared port. I don't remember the exact cabinet size, but I made it with .75" MDF and internal bracing. I was very happy with the result. The enclosure was decently small with big sound.

What specific 3-way crossover would you recommend? I've been looking online for on, but I see some that cost $8.00 and others that cost $60. Active destroy passive Marchand active crossovers are the shit really so are older TDM fuck the other brands even Ashly & Rane. The 24db slope totally eliminates inter module distortion. Here is why you need 24db slope. Do a test with your speakers. unhook your tweeter with only your woofer playing do a frequency sweep from 20 hz to 20000khz you can play it off you tube. And see how far past the crossover point you hear your woofer and now disconnect your woofer and play only the tweeter and see how far past it plays when two speakers over lap playing the same frequency's you get inter module distortion. If your using a 6db slope or 12db slope and your woofer play loud way past it's crossover point and when tweeters play to far under their crossover point it can make them sound bad at higher volumes. You can make a 24db slope passive but all those inductors will kill your amplifiers performance expecially if the amps are little low end low watt ones
