Step 1. Take inventory, identify trends, ignore them. Step 2. Find designer. Ignore them. Their job is to sell trendy. Step 3. Floor tile goes on floor, wall tile goes on wall. Novices, start with garage bath or rental unit. Do not experiment or learn the trade using your own space. Step 4. Stay away from crazy: crazy ideas, crazy designs, crazy prices. Step 5. Memorize and keep repeating Steps 1 through 4. BONUS STEP: Trust your first preference. You like it or you don't. You can afford it or you can't. Trends change but you probably won't. Much.

One tip you should mention.... If you buy clearance tile remember that you should buy a little more than you need because in two years if a tile cracks or breaks, they do not have more.

Always get a few extra tiles and store in the garage, so you can replace one that gets damaged next year, when they have gone out of stock!

I was given another tip by a specialist: random isn't - you have to plan it. If you have a blend of colors, try and lay out the mix before it goes onto the wall so you can make sure it looks good. Turned out to be very good advice, when we laid it out just "out of the box" it took some re-arranging before it looked right. That's a lot harder to do when it's already on the wall..

That does not always work, with shapes yes but with tones your eye will automatically create a pattern and you can loose the natural feel you shoukld be getting.

Love your channel. Today, after watching this episode, I headed to my tile shop and they were the antithesis of knowlegeable / helpful! I don't know if this is the post-Covid service sector problems or the difference between Canada and the US, but man, was that a discouraging visit! I persisted by visiting 2 other shops. Shop 2 was the same and shop 3 was willing to direct me to what I said I was looking for and was willing to talk through my questions. I got the impression that they only work with homeowners with a contractor and an unlimited budget and not homeowners with a budget!!!

Okay, gotta say it.... That “David” statue is ABSOLUTELY huge.... Could see in business garden or entryway that’s a Fortune 500 company, but was just thinking if would fit in anyone’s backyard😉😅 Pretty amazing the material they have at this store & options. So many & so beautiful...... Yes, buying diff products from diff stores can end up being a nightmare.... I always get all my stuff from 1 supply store, or chain(as they might have more stock at another location). Cheers✌🏻

Jeff and Max, this is a nice one guys, good tips for the average Joe/Jane. I on the other hand never buy my tiles from the orange/blue/red stores. There styles and stocks are always limited and due to that they could never keep up with the latest trend or quality product. To say the least, the box store tiles tends to have lot of defects.

Suggestion: avoid that watch in future videos. The chinking sound got picked up in the audio mix with all the hard surfaces you were around. Great video as always. I liked the tip about the large stone costing 1.4-1.5 times as much. Wouldn’t have thought about that.

Jeff, Please respond. I need advice. If I level my subfloor with Levelquik, do I still need to use cement board before tile? I don't wanna be that guy where you come in after the fact and tell me it's all wrong.

I'm not Jeff (clearly), but I've been researching the same thing for our basement bathroom reno. As far as I can tell as long as you properly prep your concrete subfloor, you can tile directly on top of it. Prepping includes a good cleaning, filling in any cracks or dips, priming, and leveling. If the leveling isn't perfect, you can take a grinder to it to file down any high points. When all that is said and done, it seems like you can then tile directly on top. However, you should be aware of what kind of tile you're using and the state your concrete floor was in to begin with. If you had lots of cracks, you might want to use some sort of de-coupling system so that the freeze-thaw cycle that cracked the concrete doesn't end up cracking tiles and grout. I think using a small scale tile (say a 2" hex kinda thing) helps negate this issue.
