ERRATUM The Helle Mandra blade is H3LS Triple laminated with a higher carbon core for better edge retention. I confused it with the Mandra FG which is 12c27

Thanks very much for sharing. This discussion goes back arguably 500,000 years as men flaked blades from stone. Eack man knew what worked best for him and would no doubt comment on the shortcomings of another's blade or offer technique. I've been a hunter for more years than I care to admit and appreciate your posts. We think along the same lines regarding blades, but have arrived at different conclusions. Thanks Again.

3” to 4” drop point is perfect for 90% of field dressing. I love 31/2” with nice belly

I dont mind the Chinese mov steels for hunting. They sharpen up so ez in the bush with a jewel stick. I prefer a medium steel like nc28n as it hold an edge longer but still can sharpen in the bush

Yeah different philosophies, do you mean 14c28n? nc28n doesn't return anything on google.

Used allot of hunting knives and I found my favorite a couple years ago. Benchmade saddle mountain. Personal preferences..

I don't have one, but they are beautiful and that CPMS30V is well loved in the knives circle. How would you rate its edge retention?

A flashy orange color for me is important, to not lose it in the wood :p

Absolutely! Not always possible, but a paracord loop can help a bit :)

All great points. Do you have any recommendations for a knife like the MKC speedgoat or blackfoot but more budget friendly?

Thank you! Absolutely, look at the Jaeger from Alaska Knives. D2 Steel, 18 to 20 angle, 3.5 inches, perfect for boning and caping. It's less than 100$ and you also get the leather sheath. I have a boning knife from them, they are really well made.

To me, there is one singular characteristic that makes it the best hunting knife, and it's like a camera: it's the one you have out there. If you left your Gucci knife at home while in the bush; it ain't field dressing that deer :) Ol' trusty that you leave in your gear bag all year long will get the job done if it's the only thing you got.

MKCs knife you are showing is nice, but the handle is not som hygenic. Moras are GREAT value for money, unbeatabul.
@WildBushGrit2 ай бұрын
moras are hands down best value knives. About the mkc paracord, you can remove and re-tie them.

@WildBushGrit Yes I know, but who has the time to do that over and over again

I´m with you in almost everything, but Paracord on a hunting knife? Not for me, sorry.
@WildBushGrit6 ай бұрын
Don't be sorry, to each their own. I find it useful. I have other knives for harsh tasks. But for gutting, field dressing to me, it's the best I've ever had. Light, slim, sharp af and the paracord could be used for many things. What is your knife?

@@WildBushGrit I wish I had only one, I´m a knife guy. I agree with you, that a smaller knife with a rounded shape and narrow blade is all it takes. But I like larger knives, even when I know I that they are suboptimal for the task. I´m from Germany and I think you won´t know the knives I´m using, from Mueller, Jars or Boeker. I once bought me a very expensive Fox River, which let me down with the first deer when I wanted ot open the pelvic bone. The edge broke at two places, you can´t imagine my dissapointment, I think it was poorly hardened. It was the most expensive knife I had bought at that time. And I did the same with some 20 bucks Moras over and over again. As a hunter in Germany, I don´t use the knives only for gutting, but for cutting off wounded animals, like deer or wild hogs, when dogs are involved or you can´t set a final shot for some reason. I guess hunting here is different from what you are used to.
