what if you have chickens who sit on your lap and feed from your hand and such but dont like to be touched, do I just pick them up and hold them petting them despite their resistance and squawking? how did you get started with handling your chickens?

took me a while to get mine to eat out of my hand and jump on my lap and hang out with me (I used food) after a while they follow me around and like to sit with me and be by me just dont pet them. they run from that. my chicks are almost five months old astrolorps.

Some breeds like Hamburgs are gonna be skittish by nature even if you held them alot when they were little. Most breeds are friendly and people curious.

by running faster, lol, I have the same problem if htey are on my lap I could just catch them so to speak and pick them up but I dont want to detrain them from eating out of my hand lap.

well I guess I end up letting my chickens stand on my arm or shoulder, let the rooster do the dominance flap, preen and crow while on my shoulder or arm. Normally their good enough I can just let them step up to my arm like a parrot. some I train like a parrot under the chest and others I train behind the feet. either way they just have to know you want them to step up and that they can feel something their to step onto.

My chickens Hate and I do mean flip out get hysterical if I don't put my hand in their little feet while carrying them... They don't step on my hand they just hold it in their little claw and squeeze when they startle or want to go down... I literally have to hold their hand 🙄
