I've been a Tele player for over ten years and have recently made the leap to a Jazzmaster. For better or worse re: their quirks and common built-in extra cost for refinements, I'm really loving it. Between the Tele and the Jazzmaster, I feel like those are two really great extremes for Fender, especially if you're mostly a single coil player like me.

It depends on what you feel comfortable playing. The weight, the neck profile and radius would make a difference. Not just the pickups.

Great video topic. I've been a strat player for nearly 20 years. Les than a month ago i bought my first Les Paul and I love it, but I love it because it's a challenge to figure out how i can get it to sound like me. It took some time and honestly you need to have confidence in yourself to get there. The idea of strat, to tele, to les paul probably makes more sense for most people.

I went Strat to Les Paul and then back to Tele and have been basically Strat and Tele ever since. The Les Paul purchase was such an event- first big boy guitar after I got out of college and had some extra cash. I was so surprised at how little I took to the LP after lusting for one for so long. I just need that bite the driven Tele gives! Blackguard tele rock tone is just my favorite drive sound.

Big fan of yall so I'll detail my 12 year guitar journey so far for algorithm. Started with the squier strat and amp combo in the 8th grade, Moved to an Ibanez single cutaway V Acoustic(smashed it for fun when the bridge and tuners were bad), grabbed an Epi LP Special II, grabbed an upgraded Ibanez acoustic (taken from my car), got a crappy acoustic for free to replace my lost ibanez's, Got an Epi Dot 335, got a MIM Fender for free from my buddy, traded the crap acoustic for a Lyon by washburn acoustic, got a real job and got a Taylor 224Koa, grabbed a prs Parlor acoustic, Epi Les Paul custom pro II, and a Yamaha rosewood/sitka dread, sold the es and les paul for an American Tele, bought on GC credit a silver sky, and rotate through the 9 guitars i still have from that list

I approached getting a guitar the same way I went about dating in high school and college. I sampled just about everything that was visually pleasing. I dated different girls, different types of girls and slowly eliminated what I didn't like. Over a long period of time the choices narrowed down until I found the one I married. So I approached the electric guitar the same. I tried several different makes and designs. I was looking for comfort, ease of play and sound. I tried, Ibanez, epiphone, gibson, fender, yamaha, peavey, jackson, and LTD. Within those makes I tried different models and slowly eliminated what I didn't like. I had a choice. Either become a user of several models or a specialist at one. As I've observed most of the greats in rock music, they've narrowed their choices to one model, one make of guitar and became an expert of that particular design. I out of elimination, I went the "only one design" option. After years of traveling this road, the Fender Stratocaster won the race for me. Hence, I am like Eric Johnson, Malsteen, Blackmore, Clapton, Trower, Hendrix, Townsend, etc. going the strat route. As a result, I buy another stratocaster when I'm wanting a different sound, by changing the pickups and hardware. My hands and body have gotten so used to playing a stratocaster - the comfort, ergonomics, the neck, the contoured body, the position of the volume nob, the pickup switch, etc.

Started on acoustic, cheap dreadnaught in highschool, upgraded a few times until I got a Martin. A year later, started on the electric side, started with a strat for like 15 years. Then a Tele with humbucker as I wanted both more twang and the ability to get woman tone. Next was an SG set up just for slide. Then a Les Paul. Then back to Fender, a custom Nashville Tele with contours to combine my favorite aspects of Strat and Tele. And recently, got a vintage Gibson ES-225T; was not on a search, neither for P90, semi-hollow, nor vintage, but was put in my hands and was magical. Also in there, grabbed a resonator for slide.

Follow up. Once upon a time when I could barely play g-f-d I bought a D-35 and found myself totally overwhelmed by it. I sat down at the dealer and played a bunch of Martins of course and settled on an OM-1 (I forget the model number, probably a 12 or something) that was one of the first made in Mexico BTW and found it a lot more comfortable coming from a Folk Yamaha. So it isn't always about buying cheap and trading up just because you can.

My first guitar was a Squier Strat because I'm left handed, it was pre-internet, and that was the one lefty the local shop had. Never bonded with that guitar. Second was an Ibanez with a Floyd style bridge because it was the one lefty at a local shop that wasn't a Strat. Never bonded with that either. Finally discovered the Epiphone Les Paul and that was what I had been wanting. After many years, I was able to move up to a Gibson Les Paul Studio and I'm set on that end. Then discovered Telecasters. I've had a Squier Classic Vibe for several years and looking to find my final Telecaster and I'll be good to go - one good Les Paul and one good Tele does everything I need.

@@johnf.r6658 FWIW, I actually just picked up an American Pro II Tele about a week ago and it's a completely different guitar from my Classic Vibe Tele. Both killer guitars, but sound and feel very different. So they are the "same shape", but still very different. May end up selling my Classic Vibe though because the AM Pro is so versatile. It's just so hard to try out guitars and see without the whole return thing.

I like playing them all. I don't really have a "main" guitar. I want all the iconic body shapes and pickup types and scale lengths and neck shapes. Currently play a Les Paul, a Strat, a Tele, a PRS Custom, and a Suhr Modern. I need an SG Special (P90s) and a semi-hollow 335 like thing.

Was a one guitar guy for 20 years haha Started with a First Act then got a sweet Godin after my parents realized how obsessed I was. I regret selling the Godin but I did for an Ibanez RG series. From there moved to a PRS SE Custom 24 which was pretty awesome. Sold that and got an SE Custom 22 semi hollow.... which honestly wasn't that great. Then I saw it. A Sienna Sunburst American Standard strat with a 60th anniversary plate hanging on the wall of my local shop. It is absolutely magical and is complete BEAST with custom fat 50s pickups. Love that thing. Fairly recently became a 2 guitar guy with an American Deluxe Tele. That thing is amazing and we've definitely bonded! Never and will never be interested in owning a Gibson. They just don't do it for me 🤷‍♂️ Yes I have tried them. I am content with 2 guitars. I could see 3 if I find an awesome Godin again but I'm the kind of player that gets so used to their guitar that I don't do very well with guitars that feel different from each other. Scale length is a big one for me. The 25.5 length of the tele/strat both with modern C necks is perfect for me and not much of a transition at all. As far as acoustics go I've owned the same Alvarez since I started playing 20 years ago. Basically can't replace it because of how well the wood aged. That thing has a massive sound.

I’d say if you start with an electric, get an acoustic. If you start with an acoustic, get an electric. Those two will cover you if you’re starting out. Afterwards, once you find what you like in terms of music, then you can get into all other genre preferred guitars to see which one fits best. Funny Baxter mentioned the Brian May red special. I play my Brian Mays and they are literally the combo of a strat, tele, les paul. I can get any sound from it, it is , literally, the most versatile guitar ever made.

Wanted to Les Paul player so bad growing up and own some nice ones but for the most part I’m a Strat player. When choosing another guitar it’s always a Strat based style guitar. An HSS is my “go to” for most part these days but in my stable I just about every pickup combination you can think of. A good compromise to get that Les Paul tone with a Fender-ish feel was a EVH Wolfgang USA.

Four years ago my first guitar was an Epi SG and I really liked it. Only a few months later I saw a Squier HH Tele for not much money and I grabbed one. I never planned on owning more than one but the more I tried the more I wanted, I wanted the full experience of all the different styles and shapes. Not long after that got a great price on an Epi LP. Then a game-changer, GC put a beautiful plus top Player Strat on sale and that changed my perspective for quality and sound and playability. Then the Videos that say "The 5 Guitars Every Player Should Own". Got a great deal on a Gibson Tribute LP and no more Epis. Discovered G&L and quit buying Squiers. Bought a used Gretsch hollowbody locally and now it is one of my favorites. For me the guitars in the $500-$1K range are the sweet spot and I have collected 24. It is like a box of chocolates, you have to try them all.

I just keep buying the same guitar. Years ago I discovered the Revstar 502 the one with the wrap tail. Now whenever I see one pop up I buy it. I did the whole, Tele, Strat, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, SG, Les Paul, Jr, 335, this one in maple this one in rosewood or ebony. Now just the Revstar, middle ground between a Tele and Paul to me and possibly only to me and that’s ok. When I find something that I like I purchase multiple, like shirts. One less thing to think about.

I had a fat strat and a LP for a very long time. My favorite of the two at any given time is the one I’m playing; couldn’t choose if I had to sell one I just added a third that I’ve actually bonded with, unlike thirds in the past. It’s one of those new Ibanez as es guitars. It’s a stratty thing that is very light weight so my back likes it! It was cheap so I’m going to be modding it If you’re going to have only two get one nice one and one cheap one! One for home, to live and cherish, and the other for modding and gigging and tearing it up! Listen to Yankee Rose by David Lee Roth. The beginning is an example of Vai doing the wammy wah thing

Interesting to hear the discussion - I started (again, 50 yrs later) with a used Washburn acoustic; after all, if Keith Richards says to start with an acoustic, why not? after a few years, I bought a Tele because it felt better (to me) than the Strats; so my 2nd electric was a Gretsch (Les Paul like shape but twangy); then an Epiphone "inspired by Les Paul" standard; then a Sire 335 version ... nothing very expensive with differences in feel, sound ... and now thinking "do I really want that Danelectro 12 string?"

Check this out…my first electric guitar was a Fender Duo Sonic that I purchased from Mass Street Music for $100 in 1995. It was perfect. I still seek that sound. My second guitar was an Ibanez JS with an effing Floyd Rose. I got it because it looked like a gift from the gods. I was wrong. I played it till my fingers bled, but it was simply too much guitar for me. You think you want the Camaro SS 1LE until you drive her for the first time and “HOLY HELL…I GOTTA RETHINK THIS!!!” Same thing happened with the Ibanez. I’ve been frightened by Floyd Rose guitars ever since. I need therapy. 😂

I have too many guitars for just two live now. I take a Guild Bluesbird for that Les Paul territory as imo, this 99 AAA is way better for that vibe than what it is copying. Then, I got 2 Stratocasters, 2 Telecasters, 1 Gibson Les Paul Classic Premium Plus, one Martin SPD16TR, a Gretsch G5232, and a Reverend Jetstream 390. I can play it all, as the Floyd is overkill when you can nail today's locking tuners, Graphtech nuts, and 2 point tremolo. So much easier to also achieve spot on tuning stability.

I look at this like colors in a crayon box. In the world of guitars, the “colors” are the sounds-so I have added guitars over the years (acoustic and electric) that give me different sounds. That can be due to pickups or tone woods. The other avenue of pursuit is having guitars with different specs and features. For instance, my first PRS was a 20th Anniversary Custom 24. Seven years later I bought another and very limited edition Custom 24, that has pickups which sound different than my anniversary C24. There are other features like the upgraded shell material of the birds on the fretboard, a hand-signed headstock from Paul and upgraded top in a color that was not part of the normal production run for that year.

All you really need is a LP, Junior, Tele, Strat, Gretsch and an SG. And another LP, Junior…backups like a rock star. Because what if one goes down at the open mic then you’ll be prepared. You really only need one or two and any good instruments will do.

Started with a Strat, I've had or tried just about every type of guitar and sold them all to go back to the Strat format.

Im a strat and telecaster guy. I tend to chase them... Buy the same ones in different colors. Even still they all feel so different oddly enough. Ive dabled in Carvin (2 guitars I still have)... One is sorta Les Paulish... Other is sort of SGish. Id love to get an Ibanez, Gretsch (White Falcon), Less Paul standard, A nice SG, An Explorer. Kind of mix em in to my Fender stuff. Ive got 4 home-made warmoth jobs. I love the hell out of them.. But Im copying fender so They're basically Fenders. I don't know.. Why do I collect them? Id guess it's because I feel each guitar I have makes me play it a little different. They all have different vibes. And.. I think they're beautiful all on display in my appartment. Spend a lot of time just looking at them.

My frame of mind was to either get a significant improvement or something completely different. My first was an electric #2 was an acoustic. #3 was an acoustic bass and at #4 I started trying to improve on stuff I liked and trying out different models to see what the hype is about for things like P90s, Jazzmasters, 335s, etc.

My buddies and I avoided Gibson for years, starting off as Fender guys. Now I love Gibson guitars. My favourite guitar now is probably my Firebird - and I used to be put off them by the metal connotations growing up in the 80s and 90s. I didn’t dislike that style of music but it was not what I play. Now I think they look cool, sound great and play really well. Until you’ve tried lots of different types of guitars, it’s hard to know what will work for you .

I've mostly had Les Pauls and super Strat guitars. My first real "2nd" (or 3rd) was when I got a Tele. Highly recommended !

Agreed. Avoided Teles for years because of their association with country music. Boy was I wrong. It’s a do-it-all guitar especially with the Custom Shop Twisted Tele pickups.

One thought is if you have a solid body electric, maybe get a semi or hollow body for your second. Totally different tonal range and can compliment each other really well. Like the way Slash has Fortus to compliment the LP with his Gretsch Falcons.

My journey so far has been les Paul, tele then strat. I haven’t touched either the LP or tele since I got my strat. I literally just picked up a firebird but it plays so differently I had to list it on reverb as I purchased it as is no returns.. always try before you buy if you have that luxury
