I’m from Northern England...where the flatcap originated from. A very long time ago it used to be the law that you had to wear one outside the home and you’d be fined if you were caught not wearing one. It was all about boosting the wool industry.

I am a 52 year old American woman from Boston. I have been wearing "Scally" caps, as we call them, since I was about 7 or 8. I love them so much! My mother hates them on me because she thinks they are too masculine. Phttttt! I couldn't care less. About a year ago I happened upon a lovely scally made in Ireland and it's my absolute favorite. I don't get to wear it much as I now live in Florida and it's too hot here to wear a wool cap. I would love to acquire a lightweight, summer friendly cap I could wear here!

In Italy all of these caps go by the name of "coppole" (singular "coppola"), from a Southern Italian word that literally means "head". It seems that this cap was first introduced to Italy by English people in the 19th or early 20th century but it soon became a staple of the typical Sicilian clothing style. Today it's not as common as it used to be, you usually see it sported by old people (not only in Sicily but in the whole country) but as of late flat caps are having a sort of revival here too. The Italian coppola usual comes in a plain flat pattern, sometimes featuring a snap brim, but some other patterns are slowly taking hold in the past few years.

+stan smith Good choice, flat caps are very traditional here and I personally think they're classy but still informal at the same time (differently from fedoras, for instance), so that you can wear one in different situations. Plus they come in a variety of patterns so you have plenty to choose from.

I’ve owned a Goorin Bros flat cap for 6 years. It’s seen many miles of cruising Anchorage Ak and Panama City Fl on my skateboard. I’ve worn it out fishing, in theaters and to my friends houses for board game nights. So much that one of their daughters is obsessed with it. Tonight I found the brim broken. The silver lining is that I’m actually in Las Vegas, which is the only city that I’ve been in that actually has a Goorin Bros shop.

Kudos for the Vid. For those of us who do not conform to some people's ideas of fashion, and walk proudly to our own drum, the Video is a great treasure trove of the differences between hats. As one who has a vast collection of styles that continue to multiply each year, and as my son loves Flat Caps..guess it's an Irish thing... We'd prefer to create our style of dress, not what others say is the in thing, nor falling in line for the sake of haters. Or perhaps not haters, just people who's idea of what people should wear because either they can't pull off the look, or think beanies and baseball caps are an exceptional statement or maybe they are just so happy in their negativity they feel they must try to knock others down. One would think if you're really wanted to complain about fashion you'd choose something truly horrific, like pants with writing across the arse, pants hanging half or 3/4 off said arse, skirts that barely cover the arse, super tight and very micro dresses, pants, etc., moms dressing in clothes from their daughters closet, or men with pants that emphasizes the crack of their arse, parents dressing their grade school daughters in things that would be more in line with Barflies.
