I love that you use bed sheets as your backing. I've been sewing and quilting for about 60 years and I used to use sheets for backing when I was younger. I stopped when the "professional" quilters said ...do not use sheets. I'm back to using bedsheets...thank you

I pin baste on my kitchen table, using g clamps to hold the layers taut as I pin. Yes, the table gets scratched but it's a vintage pine table, not glossy fancy or anything. Saves me hours on my knees and my back pain!

Fantastic, I’ve used flat sheets for backing my quilts for over 20 years. My logic being, this quilt is for a bed, why not? Plus you get a lot of fabric for a great price.

I love this video. You are so personable and easy to understand. So glad I found this because I wanted to try pin basting because the spray baste is not working for me anymore. I have respiratory issues that the spray fumes aggravate. Also, suddenly I am going through needles like crazy and I feel it is due to the basting spray gumming up my needles. Also, I found a Kwik Klip thing in a box from a yard sale and had no idea what it was for. Thank you for taking the time to post this, even it it was years ago. Still great information.

I've never pinned a quilt like this before. Looks interesting. My mom and I usually put our quilts up on a frame and hand stitch. My aunt bought a quilting machine 2 years ago, so I haven't hand stitched in awhile, but I'd love to again.

When it comes to pin basting my quilts, I had to find an alternative to my tile floors; I have two dogs that love to “help.” I bought two of those folding plastic buffet tables pretty cheaply from Target. They store so easily. I set them up side by side in my living room, and pin baste on top of them. I don’t care about the plastic getting nicked up by the pins, and between the join of the two tables and the split in each one where they fold, I also have center cross hairs.

That is a FANTASTIC idea! I'm going to take this advice, as getting the dogs out of the space is getting harder and harder.

I have pin basted on carpet with an old large cutting mat under it and scooch it around where I need to pin. It works and unfortunately, I'm about to have to do it again tomorrow, hence why I am refreshing myself up on this lol I also use extra sticky painters tape I got my painter husband to grab for me. I do think I'm going to spray baste a little bit too.

I don’t know exactly about wool batting. But I know wool is to be hand washed or dry clean only. Put it in the tub and let it soak with a little bit of movement. That’s what I do with my wool fabric. I hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing! If I use a sheet, do I need to keep it under a certain thread count? I've heard if the thread count is too high, then it causes problem with quilting.

I found these little plastic cylinders called “pin-its” that I now use instead of closing the pins. They were kinda expensive, but I get tired of closing and opening all the pins. I like your idea to mark with washy tape where any pattern might be on the back. Could make lining it all up easier! Thanks!

Hi! I really love your videos!! I came across your videos just last week and have already watched quite a few. I tried a quilt sandwich on a smaller piece and I too thought it was not very hard to do. I did struggle with quilting it on my machine. Do you have a video of when you quilted one? I have two quilts that my grandmother made me 25 years ago when I got married. The back is worn out in several places and I want to put a new back on it, which is why i am trying to learn how to do this. I have taken it to 3 places to see if a long arm quilter would put a new back on it for me, however no one will touch it b/c it is made with foretell and velour material. It is a heavy quilt and originally hand stitches, nice and puffy. I have a non computerized older type sewing machine and I feel confident that I do the new back. I would just do straight lines and follow the squares. I originally thought of just putting the new back on over the old back. Do you recommend that? or should I take it all apart and then remove the old backing? It is mostly wore out around the edges on the top/bottom and sides. The middle part is okay. I miss sleeping with it b/c it is heavier and I always feel like i am tucked in, and I am needing that comfort now for some reason. I really appreciate all the links for the tools you use, I tried to find one of those quick click tools and no luck where I live. Thank you!

Just reading your comment...that seems like a good idea to just put another back on top of the old one...then you'll need to bind it again..I just put a new binding and patched a few holes on a client's quilt. It's a quilt over 50 years old! It was in her mom's closet for years. She surprised her mom...her mom sobbed when she saw it.

I use the basting spray and pins. You don’t need a lot of spray. I use my dining room table and begin at the center. The only trouble I’ve had is when I bought some cotton fabric from Hobby Lobby for a border and it rippled a lot while I was free motion quilting, other than that I’ve had pretty good results with my backing not getting creased while I quilt my quilt. I usually make bed size quilts because I try to use up all the fabric bundle.

I bought what I thought were quality quilting pins. After pinning, I machine quilted about 1/3 of the quilt. I noticed I had some unwanted bunching that needed to be ripped out. Needless to say, I set the quilt aside. It sat for a year. I took out the stitching and started to remove the pins. To my horror, the pins rusted. How do I remove the rust spots? The fabric is 100% cotton.
