Great video. I brought mine in about 2 weeks ago, and it is so reassuring to see I did them the same way. The only difference is mine were in big pots instead of the ground, because I have heavy clay soil, and we sometimes get a lot of rain (annual average in my zone 7a Virginia location is 48” of rain and 16” of snow-and no, I am NOT complaining about the precipitation!). Looking forward to seeing how they perform this winter after I bring them up from the basement. Thank you for your channel. I really appreciate how detailed and specific you are with your videos. I am anxious to see how your pachysandra ground cover does at the front, since mine wants to take over the world and I’m trying to figure out the best way to establish some boundaries!

I live in south Louisiana. Zone 8bish. We leave ours in the ground year round. They do not need a dormant period to bloom from what I’ve seen. Mine grow all year long until a cold snap. The foliage dies back and the foliage immediately starts growing again. They do this for the winter months and then spring comes and they bloom no matter what. So my point is, they aren’t picky about dormancy. Just need to be out of extreme cold (28’F)

👍 same here. The leaves "dry" during the Winter and during the Spring they start growing again. I live in Europe and in my region is not much cold or warm, in winter its usually don't go under -3°C/26.6°F

I live in Oklahoma and we've had some cold winter the last two years, I'm taking about 0°f for two weeks in a row. Now to be honest they are protected from north wind from the house. They haven't died and last season I dug my oldest plant which was about 4 years in the ground to separate them. That had Six bulbs and I replanted them and they all flowered this season.

That's why we should ask ourselves how important is it to get blooms in the Winter. I live in Canada (zone 3) and have grown Amaryllis for over 10 years. I used to try and get them to bloom for Christmas/New Year's time with little success. But with patience, I have learned to bide my time, and my Amaryllis plants are part of my Spring Patio Garden. I get multiple flower spikes 2-3 times during the Spring and Summer. By Labor Day I put them in my garage for a week or so to dry after a watering with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Then inside they come for the winter. Sometimes I put them in my cold room in the basement. While the small guys will stay green in their pots in an empty room that gets plenty of sun to keep bulking up.

I'm zone 7a NJ. I have 2 Hardy Amaryllis Alaska that I planted in the ground May 2021. I planted them like I plant my daffodils 7" deep. They came back just fine. I have 12 Hippeastrum (Amaryllis) I bought over the last 3 years from Lowe's, Home Depot and Walgreens. I usually dig them up mid November. Store them until May in my garage. This year I planted 6 in my garden about 8" deep. I want to see how they survive the winter. The other 6 I will do what I've been doing for the last few years: removed the soil and put them in a opened cardboard box until the leaves start to die back. At that point I will cut back the roots & leaves. Then wrap the closed box with a blanket. And into the garage until May.

Two winters ago I bought some red flowering one from Lowes that were marked down . They had wax on the bulbs . I looked them up on the web site that was on the card and it said just throw them away when they stop blooming. Well I said nope I’m gonna experiment. So I watered three of them during the rest of the winter . Then in spring I had some roots starting to grow . No soil just a little water. So 2021 spring we took the wax off and planted them in a tree size pot . They grow like crazy. All leaves no blooms. Well I’m in NC so I left them out side they wintered over and in March I saw bloom buds popping up . Y’all we still had frost . So on nights it was to frost I coved them . They bloomed the most beautiful deep red . 10 times prettier and larger than the blooms a few had when I bought them . They were small blooms when I got them ,but when they bloomed this spring they where the size of my hand . I had one that was orange but it didn’t make it . The one I was hoping so much that would . I also bought more from Walmart and dollar general last winter and they bloomed in the house beautiful. I had one from Walmart that was named tinker bell . It bloomed in Dec or Jan and then bloomed again during the summer, I was surprised. So we see how they do the winter out side and then see how many beautiful blooms I have in the spring. Ole at dollar general they had just a plain single white one . So I bought it for ten dollars. Y’all. When it bloomed I had a double white bloom . I was so surprised. So I bought another one and it was a double to . My mom has a beautiful pink and white not sure of the name , it was a gift many years ago . I brought some home and they bloomed the same time my red did that had the wax removed. I cross breed them . So I have a few babies to come up from there seeds . So it will be interesting to see what I made . Lol

I'm on my first (would you believe at nearly 70 ?) experiments with bulbs that were gifts.. one waxed bulb from my mother- in- law in Holland... (where it's more of a tradition than here in France) to have these lovely flowers blooming around Christmas.. I overwintered some bulbs last year & one surprised me by giving beautiful flowers... the bulb from Holland was a waxed one, & l took the wax off & planted it out in the spring... we'll see what happens when l get these 3 bulbs in ..probably when the leaves die back. I'm very grateful to all of you people who provide information to help others embellish their lives ...thanks !! Bye for now.. Annie

Nice to see a fellow Jersey resident. I’ve moved to NC but you can’t take the jersey outta me. Question: I’m growing a dozen amaryllis from seeds and they’re on their 4th leaf now 5 months after germination. I’m hoping to keep them going for two years without dormancy at all. Once they’re big enough do you recommend I put them into dormancy, re pot then they’ll bloom? Like put them in dry darkness in September 2026 then pot up in January 27 and they’ll bloom? Do I have this correct?

I have been taking my amaryllis through the seasons for many years now, and I always remove the strappy leaves once I bring them into the basement from having spent the summer outside. I don’t believe tou mentioned removing your leaves--or did I miss it? Anyway, at least for me, making sure the bulbs are extremely dry and the leaves are cut off are by far the two most important aspects of the dormancy period for my amaryllis.

I did not cut leaves and put them in the cold basement in original pots. The soil was dry, I did not water them for 2 months. Unfortunately they did not lose green leaves. It’s November 8 today. Wondering what to do with them? I feel that they did not get proper dormancy. Should I cut the leaves, and put in in a fridge for few week?

Great timing! I'm putting mine into dormancy for the 1st time this year - I did keep them in pots over summer, so I'll just bring those in and let them dry out as you suggested. I do have a quick question - where did you plant them outdoors in terms of exposure - part sun? shade? I'm thinking this may be much easier for me next year instead of using pots, as I kept forgetting about them and let the soil dry out for a bit too long a few times. Thanks!

beautiful bulbs. how do you prepare the soil in the garden for your Amaryllis? I live in Redlands CA. My garden soil is sandy. last year I mixed potting soil to the yard soil to plant my amaryllis and fertilized them but the bulbs got very small.

I add a lot of organic matter. Compost, well rotted manure (chicken, cow), shredded leaves, mulch. Soil takes time to build over time but now I have the fluffiest most rich soil. I do fertilize these about once a month in summer

Hello. I live in Central FL where it's warm to blazing hot most of the time. I got 2 of the amaryllis from a friend about 3 yrs ago. They were in separate pots and they sat on my shelf outside for the last 3 yrs. Earlier this yr 2024 i finally took the time to find out what there were since i never got any flowers out of them. I planted them in the ground but still haven't gotten any flowers. Just nice green long foliage. My house is about 76 degrees. If i dig them up and put them even in a dark area do you think when i pot them again they might finally bloom for me? I have no clue what color flowers they will even have. I'm at a loss with these guys. Help...

Most likely They are not blooming either because they are not getting enough light or not enough fertilizer. Keep them outdoors and they will bloom eventually!

I plant them out so the bulbs bulk up and store a lot of energy to produce a flower. In the fall I place them into dormancy for 8-12 weeks, start watering and they bloom!

Lowe’s or Home Depot sells them around Christmas every year pretty inexpensively $7 a bulb. Or Sams or Costco May sell them too. That’s where I got my white and pink ones. I bought my red ones from a neighbor off FB Marketplace.

​@@lesw3803, If you observe their leaves during late Summer, you will notice they start to fade. The green color gets lighter & the plant is telling you it's preparing for dormancy. Stop feeding and taper off watering. The leaves will dry & shrivel up. When they are dry & brown, remove the leaves and make sure they are kept dry and not too warm. In a cardboard box, if they are kept dry, let them rest until the days begin getting longer. Then it's time to repot or plant in the ground with diluted liquid fertilizer and water. Some companies make good fertilizer for bulbs that includes Calcium, or look for crab shell based fertilizer (Calcium, Copper, and Iron) your soil should drain very well so the bulbs don't get mushy or rot. Talk to the folks at your local nursery - they know your weather patterns & what your soil might need to encourage growth AND blooms. I'm in Southern California - one of my potted Amaryllis is blooming, a last hurrah before Fall. The rest of them have leaves that are fading in color. Getting ready for sleep. This year I need to pull, separate, dry out, and rest my Amaryllis. The potting soil needs refreshing and replenishing with some good manure, vermiculite, coir, and compost. The pots with refreshed soil can remain outside and soak up rain while the bulbs sleep indoors. Come early Spring, maybe Jan/Feb I'll get the bulbs planted back into pots and let them slowly wake up. Indirect light outside, because we can get 70 - 80F in April. Watch your weather and sun exposure carefully. Eastern exposure can be nice in early Spring here to avoid too much heat too soon. I have 2 big pots with about 8 bulbs in each. I really enjoy them. 🌺
