I am addicted to amaryllis too! I have over thirty bulbs that I put outside in my garden and bring in each year. Plus I ordered about 20 new ones! I also force over thirty hyacinths in jars and in pots. It really cheers me up to have them blooming in the dull winter months when it is gray and gloomy outside. Really enjoy your videos Danielle!

I buy a few new amaryllis every year ...when outside temps permit they go outside (Tucson AZ zone 9b). I water them and fertilize when necessary but never put into dormancy or cut leaves off unless they turn brown (I do cut the bloom stalks off when spent). I have them in filtered light under a mesquite tree so as to protect from the intense sun but they get adequate water. Every late spring (May - June) the older ones bloom. The new ones generally take a full year to recharge, they don't bloom til the following spring. So every spring I get lots of beautiful amaryllis and new baby amaryllis, and every winter I get new ones that I don't have. Total win-win! In the spring as the new flowers bloom, they come inside so I can enjoy them, then back out again to recharge for the following year. I am bed bound and garden by remote control through my caregivers so this is the best thing for me.

My mom, when I was just a kid, had a new color of Amaryllis every time one came out. Eventually colors stopped yet she had many. I bought one for my son who's 24 and we been sitting watching it grow. I explained how to care for it and let it sleep after is done. I remember her enjoying these so much. Much more than the roses anyone ever sent to the house when they couldn't make it for a birthday or holiday. An I remember her taking the pots when done and placing them in the top of her closet. Around the end of Oct she would start peeking at the center of the bulbs waiting for a peek of green. Oh I use to get as excited as her. Once the green showed, out they'd come and she would start watering them. Placed in the northern window where they got just a bit of sun through the winter, by the end of November we watched them grow taller and bud out, turning each pot to keep those stems straight. By the 1st of December it was exciting, there they were all beautifully lined up and smiling with their flowers wide as the pot they sat in. I might be 60, but I'm setting here watching a bud open since this morning. If I had a camera that I could time lapse, it would have been awesome for others to see. This bulb has given us 2 stalks, shorter than I remember, but white with each edging in a red lining. Its the ❤ Picotee Amaryllis❤ I'm as excited as a child at Christmas. Happy Holidays to all❣️

I wouldn't say I'm addicted to amaryllis but they are very sentimental to me as well. They were my dad's favorite and I'm now getting to the point where I can enjoy the things he did with joy instead of sadness. Through gifts and purchases I ended up with three last year and will put the two survivors into dormancy. It will be nice to have color in the grey of winter. And I'll probably sneak in a few new bulbs for the holidays!

You must have a money tree growing in your yard somewhere because amaryllis are not cheap…lol. I only say that because when I moved to Florida in 1972, Sarasota to be specific, I would buy amaryllis bulbs for $.25 or $.50 and now when I look at the prices, I just can’t believe what I’m seeing. Some of the Amaryllis are so beautiful though with their frilly petals and their pink and whites and some of the colors that they have, they’re just not your basic red that we used to get back in the olden days. So there are, it seems like to me, way more varieties. Can’t wait to watch your unpacking. That should be fun. That’s what drew me to your channel in the first place last year.

In the States indeed Amaryllis were expensive. Here in Israel they tend to be inexpensive. No Christmas here, so they are not marketed as holiday novelties.
@metalyn7 ай бұрын
@@Menachem59 Once someone finds out how much they can get you to pay for something the price goes up. When I used to buy them for a quarter/$.25 in the 1970s, you could cut them in half stick them in the sandy soil and they would multiply like crazy.

Last year only 2 of mine rebooted. I didn't put them out this summer but left on a sunny window. They grew foliage but not as much. Life happened and I didn't up pot them but now have pots and soil for when they come out of dormancy. Should I use fertilizer when I bring out of dormancy and repot in a little larger pot? What kind of fertilizer should I use. I'd love to get a,really nice large bulb but can't afford it. Thankfully I was blessed with an amazing clearance at Walmart and got about a dozen bulbs for 3 each. I had a,bedroom window and table all blooming in january...it was amazing. Marque which is a lovely white and Tinkerbell defying description are my two favorites. My grandmother gave me an orange wild amaryllis that's been in family3+ generations! So glad you posted this. I’m in zone 9 Texas. Hot Hotter and Hottest. You talked me into getting an amaryllis. So I got the plant last year. I put it in the ground. It bloomed. Then the bloom went away. In summer I cut it to the ground. Then we had those 100 degree days (50 straight). Now I see the leaves are growing again and they are multiplying. I’m not sure what to do, do I will leave them be and see what happens. 🤞🏾 they come back. Nature will let me know.

Kudos on the great videos on your Amaryllis. Watching them is re-igniting my passion for these beautiful blooms... They are what sparked my passion for photography as I enjoy taking macro shots of the blooms. I'm curious, where do you purchase your pots from? I like the look and heft of them...they appear to be clay of some sort and being tall, they appear to allow the roots to develop fully. I live in a rented condo so have no basement to OW them in...however I do have a great south facing window so they get great light while indoors and then when I want to over-summer them, I plant them all in one big planter to mature outside. Also, I've checked some of the websites you link that supply Amaryllis but sadly they don't ship to Canada. The nearest one would be Brecks but they don't have near the selection that the others have that you listed....(insert pouty face here). I have no idea why we can't get the same selection here that you guys get in the states. I had watched your unboxing video and was flabbergasted (in a good way) at the sheer size of those bulbs!!!! They were gorgeous. Thanks for all your information and passion for these beautiful flowers. Cheers...

I have only 3 bulbs but oldest of them is about 23-25 years old. And I never put my hippeastrum bulbs to real dormancy. I just leave them on windowsill with cacti collection at around 12-15 Celsius for entire winter with mild watering. They reward me with 4-5 flower stalks for that. Yep, they don't drop all their leaves and bulbs do increase in size during that period. I repot them usually in February when days become sunnier.

Thank you for your beautiful videos, and these superb plants. But what you call Amaryllis are, unless I am mistaken, Hippeastrum which are plants from South America. Amaryllis are plants from South Africa and limited to two species including Amaryllis belladonna, the foliage arrives after flowering and they resist the cold well, so we can put them in the garden... not like the Hippeastrums.

I have enjoyed your videos on amaryllis and have for the first time purchased 3 of the large bulbs. Going well so far and flower shoots are coming along at different pace each. My question is about watering - so far I have given them 1/2 cup each once a week ... but surely as they grow they will need lots more. Did you put out a video about watering over time ? Or could you suggest how much they will need as they grow. ?

Danielle - love this video. I will search your other videos to see if this is answered but do I separate out the daughter bulbs when I take my amaryllis out of dormancy and repot it? Do I throw away the mother bulb or do you continue to nurture her and see if she will continue to bloom?

You can separate them when you bring them out of dormancy or you can leave them attached for a year or two. I have done it both ways. Keep the mother for as long as possible. My mom had a huge bulb stop producing. I haven’t had that happen yet and some of my bulbs are almost 10 years old.

Hi Danielle. I pulled my amaryllis indoors at the end of August for blooming around Christmas, but the foliage keeps growing - it's not dying back as you suggest. I did water them before I brought them inside and am wondering if that was part of my problem? Also, I don't really have a place that drops down to 50 degrees anywhere inside my home, nor outside as our daytime temps are still in the 80's and 90's. Do you have other thoughts on what I can do to force these bulbs into dormancy, or is some growth once brought in expected? They're still growing and it's been a full month now! Hope to hear from you. Thank you!

Hi Danielle, Happy New Year to you! I have a quick question for you about amaryllis - so I stored my amaryllis plants in the cold dark basement for 2 months. I went down to take them out of dormancy and saw that many of them had sprouted tall buds that are light yellow in color since they didn’t get sunlight. I am so confused! How did this happen when I didn’t even water them or bring them out? Should I cut the sprouted buds and let the plant produce new buds or should I just refresh the soil in the pots and water them and put them in daylight?

Thank you for a very informative video. I have started to try to rebloom amaryllis the last 2 years. Last year was a flop, but it was because I did not do the dormancy period correctly. This summer, I started the dry/dark period in August for 2 months. But, I'm not sure if they got cool enough. Can the bulbs go into a refrigerator to "chill" during the dormancy period? I am stumped on what I need to know about the temperature for the dormancy period and if it's safe to store them in a refrigerator (airtight storage). Thank you very much.

I just purchased bulbs from a nursery and they say to put them in the crisper of your frig if you're not going to plant them right away. Don't put any apples in your frig. Apparently, that will sterilize your bulbs.

Hi I have a Problem, I had a large bulb last year, then the bulb outer shell was soft, could feel the inner hard, ended taking the outer shell off, now I had a small bulb. Just bought new Amaryllis bulbs, have one thats flowering, got 8 flowers on two stems. It's soft as before. It's detached from the inner blub. Do you know what's going on. I love the Amaryllis so I need to fix what's going on. Can you help?

My first amaryllis purchase was inspired by your videos! I bought an Elvas last year and following your instructions it did great and produced a baby which I have already separated and grow on its own. Only thing is that when I dug the mother bulb up to inspect it before dormancy, it was a little smaller, not bigger. Do you know the possible causes and what to do to prevent further shrinking? Thank you for your content!

I live in Athens, Greece which means we experience hot dry summers and mild winters. I live in an apartment so I had the plant in the balcony with the leaves hanging outside so it took the most sun possible. I fertilized it with dilluted 3-4-5 fertilizer and I watered it every time the surface soil dried out.

A amaryllis addiction is not a bad addiction to have!😬. That's how I am with dahlias. I keep adding and getting from different suppliers and when I get them I say Oops, I forgot about that order lol. I do add more amaryllis to my collection each year as well! Where do you like to order yours from?

Я також люблю амариліси, познайомилася з цією грандіозною рослиною у ботанічному саду у Києві. Це була виставка квітучих азалій та амарилісів - фантастична краса!

You inspired me to do this, this year. I just brought my amaryllis that were outside, in a few weeks ago. All had grown lots of leaves. One of my southern hemisphere bulbs - Double Marquis - had a bud on it! It is now blooming with four flowers! What did I do wrong? When it quits blooming, should I treat it as a house plant and try to put it into dormancy sooner next year? My other bulbs are mostly all Dutch bulbs.

Hi friend! Some of mine have bloomed again in summer. I am still going to put them into dormancy now since they have lots of leaves. I’m no expert! But that’s what I’m going to do.

I love amaryllis! I have planted mine out in my garden in zone 8a. We don’t have a basement and I never know where to put them into dormancy. Every year I suffer from indecision, and must go purchase more to bloom in the house. I’d really like to dig them up and put them into dormancy. Any ideas?

Hello and thank you for your video. From your video it looks like I'm getting a late start to getting my Amaryllis to bloom by Christmas. Is it too late? I just moved them to my basement.

Hi Danielle, I just brought my 3 bulbs indoors to place in the basement and one of the bulbs has quite a large bud on it. Should I just leave it in a sunny location and let the bloom open?

So... Would you advise against taking them out of soil and trimming roots in fall?
