I am in the process of it right now and I still don't think 8k is a budget wedding. 8k you can book an actual venue that takes care of most of that crap, just not a super fancy one. If I can book a venue for 8k that takes care of most stuff, im definitely not going to spend 8k and worry about it all myself.
@catherineclaire7429 Жыл бұрын
At first I was like $8K+ and they didn't have to pay for a venue? I was discouraged because we're on a budget and don't have the same cost-saving connections like a friend who owns a brewery, but then I realized her wedding had 120 RSVPs. So she did pretty great even with those hookups taken into account. My guest list is less than half that size and I'm hoping we can pull something similar off. I relate hard to caring and stressing about the aesthetic. I'm glad she felt her day was what she wanted, even with the compromises on things like fruitwood tables. Gives me hope.

The comments saying "oh my wedding cost me $30 in total" are so insufferable. Not everyone wants to do their wedding in the public park in a white dress from the thrift shop. It's so cool watching her break all this down. I've always thought of 15K as a lower budget wedding.
@Forever-And.Ever-Amen4 жыл бұрын
I guess the phrase "low budget" is relative to class, expectations and culture. To me $15,000 is a massive budget but to someone who makes a lot more, is upper class or has the traditional help from parents that is "their" version low budget. So in saying that. I can't and and won't knock her for probably having the most cost effective wedding among her peers.

"People who can't afford an expensive wedding are so insufferable." 🙄 Not everyone can afford $8000 on a wedding, and it's really frustrating to those people that every single video, book, blog, etc. acts like $8-10,000 is low budget, when it's really not. It's totally fine for people to spend whatever they want on their wedding, but there's NO CONTENT for people who simply can't afford it.

Biggest way we saved: Eloping with an at home reception. Our wedding-moon and reception altogether came in just under $10k with airfare (~$1650 total). We paid for everything as we went over 13 months leading up to the wedding and afterwards for the reception. The key to saving is really not being afraid to be unconventional when planning it and asking for help. The biggest cost saving changes were having an intentionally small reception (

Just a note because I also got married last year and I did my best to have a budget wedding. Sometimes it's just not going to be possible to have a beautiful wedding like this without spending a lot more money. We don't have any friends who have wedding venues, who are wedding photographers, who are florists, who do rentals, etc. I planned the entire wedding myself and loved it but I had to pay full price for everything unfortunately because that's life. The venue/catering is usually the biggest cost by far (usually the venue has caterers that you have to use), so that by itself was extremely expensive. The only thing I did have was a friend who makes cakes, and I got a huge discount on the cake (but I only saved like $300 on that). We had a lot more guests than Marah had because our parents are very traditional and needed to invite all the people they know, but that was okay because they helped us out with the costs. We skipped the open bar but had wine bottles and champagne flutes at the tables. We're lucky that we found a venue we loved that allowed us to bring our own drinks and desserts, most don't (with the exception of the cake of course). Just keep in mind for people who are hoping for a beautiful wedding but want to spend under $10K, it might not be possible if you don't know somebody that can rent you a venue and furniture for super cheap, unfortunately
@elphabarichardson6075 жыл бұрын
I agree! Not everyone has friends who can offer these things. Also, no one should expect that their friends can do anything for them. (Not saying this was the case with the video). Businesses are supposed to make money, so you cannot expect your friends who own something to lose money by doing you a favor for your wedding. I also do not think that you should expect your friends to help with making decor or set up/clean up of the venue. If your friend is a photographer, should they not be enjoying your wedding instead of working? That is just how I feel. My husband and I were married just over three years ago and spent just under $3000 on everything for our wedding, reception, and minimoon. We only had seven guests, so it was easier to keep the costs lower. We got an amazing deal on our photographer ($300 for 2 hours rather than her typical $1800/4hr minimum) by pure luck, but everything else came with lots of research and a great deal of work. I personally constructed a total of 30 ft of rolled paper rose garland over the course of a few months. I used a couple of books that had been ruined and about 10 sheets of colored paper to roll the roses. I used tule and flower foam from Dollar Tree to make the base. I think I spent $12. I know that it was less than $15. Because of our budgeting and hard work, we were also able to give each of our guests a book, (each book was personally selected for the guest), a crystal , and a nice pair of chopsticks. (We had a dim sum dinner with some other typical American Chinese dishes because my husband and I love that type of food. It was from our favorite local Chinese restaurant. We are friendly with the owners.) Surprisingly, even with the tight budget and work, planning was pretty stressfree. It ended up being perfect. I applaud you for being able to budget and plan for that many people! I could not have had a big wedding. Nor could my husband. Luckily, I only speak with one of my sisters and her children, hence the aforementioned niece, so no need to invite my large family. At the time, my husband chose not to invite his much-loved mother due to certain situations at the time. Not inviting her meant not inviting his even larger family. (It was the right choice, but I do wish things had been different then so that she could have been there.) It would have been hell.

As someone who also had a lower budget wedding (lower being between $15,000-20,000 for 150 people), I really recommend spending more on a photographer. I do photography, so I am especially picky. I went with a girl who is newer to the wedding photography scene, but had a great portfolio. She did a lovely job and she captured some of my favorite moments that I will have in frames forever. HOWEVER, she was not as skilled at posing larger groups, so my bridesmaid photos are mostly just boring standing-in-line stuff. I was a little disappointed by that, so that is definitely something to think about (and maybe consider having some chairs or other items on-hand to make fun poses a little easier and make sure you get what you want). Congrats on your nuptials, Marah! It sounds like I got married just 5 days after you! :)

@creativelife98715 жыл бұрын
hillary 96 renteria historically yes. Of course the bride and groom can do what they want but usually the bridesmaid pays for their own dresses. Some brides will pay for hair and makeup so everyone looks cohesive and a fun bonding moment and some brides don’t care and are happy for her wedding party do their own hair and makeup the way they are comfortable.

Creative Life oh I see. I’ve never even been to a wedding so I didn’t know.
@creativelife98715 жыл бұрын
hillary 96 renteria Since you asked the question, I’ll bet you’ll be invited to one soon. 😊 But yeah, so if anyone ever asks you to be their bridesmaid just know that you may be paying for your own dress, shoes and possibly hair and makeup if the bride doesn’t hire those people to do everyone the day of. If the wedding is a destination, you’ll also be paying for your own travel so keep that in mind as well. So typically as a bride you’re just paying for a gift for your wedding party, their bouquets and boutonnières and food while you all get ready (the groom and his guys will usually be out to eat or golfing or something so they may be paying for that) and if you’re feeling generous and/or a bit controlling you may be footing the bill for your bridesmaids hair and makeup but that’s not an expectation at all. I’m a wedding planner but also getting married next year and my bridesmaids are doing their own hair, nails and makeup if they want. They are also my sisters so I may pay for it all as a treat for them anyway because well they’re my sisters. Lol!!

My flowers were from Costco. My caterer did $8.00/plate because she needed a reference. My photographer needed something for his portfolio. We DID NOT have alchohol. My reception and wedding venue was $250 because It was a a local mega church..... there are many ways to spend way under 8 grand with twice the amount of people BUT it takes intense planning and lots of diy

Glad you had a gorgeous wedding for a reasonable cost! $8000 is def way less than some folks pay. I helped to organize two weddings for family & friends who were unable to spend anything like the average cost. One bride made her gown, another bought one online for under $100. Grooms wore khakis and white shirts. I bought silk flowers from Amazon and made bouquets for the bride and maid of honor and boutinners for the grooms & best men. We selected beautiful, outdoor public locations and had a friend/chaplain lead the ceremony. Guests stood or bought a lawn chair. Both brides had non wedding cakes made. Both had wedding dinners which included dancing to a favorite song and cutting of the cake. Neither wedding- total- cost more than $800. They are some of the most memorable weddings I've been to. So one doesn't need to spend ten of thousands of dollars to have a lovely, memorable, beautiful wedding. :)

The best way to keep it low budget is to limit your guest list. A small guest list also gives you the opportunity to talk with all of your guests. I hate going to weddings that are so big that you only see the couple from across the room. We had a micro wedding with seven guests. Our reception was a sit-down dim sum (and other Chinese dishes) dinner party where we sat at a large table with all our guests. Obviously not for everyone, but our total costs came out to be just under $3000. That includes everything: rings, location, photographer, wedding favors, decor, outfits, minimoon, etc... Hi Marah, don't worry, not only your friends are watching this video:) I am getting married next summer, and my fiance and I just personally don't want to spend a huge amount of money on this 1 short day, so we also try to figure out what is important for us - and what is not. Luckily, for me decor is not important at all - so we probably would save a ton of money on this. Also we decided to book a fancy villa in Montenegro - the villa itself and the view on the sea is so breathtaking beautiful, that we don't really need to many things to make it look nice. Also, really liked your cake idea - I also don't get it why I would spend 300-400 usd on a cake

My husband and I got married for the cost of a marriage license basically. Our officiant was a close friend who had connections to a place with a gazebo and we got married their for free. We took some close friends as witnesses and that was that. All sides of the family supported our decision and how we wanted to do it. We want to do a vowel renewal for family on our 5 year anniversary.

We spent 50,000. Could not have happened without the help of our family. They paid for about half and we paid for the other half. If left up to pay for everything ourselves our wedding would’ve been much smaller. Grateful for the help we had.

Lol I'm lucky. If I get married in Malaysia we have these traditional houses called "longhouses" that accommodate around 30 families - 50 families (everyone related)! Everyone in the longhouse contributes to the wedding by cooking up dishes that are shared with everyone, and most of the weddings cost under a couple thousand.

I spent like a year looking for my dress and bought it 6 months before he proposed! LOL! We had been talking about marriage for a few years - I customized mine, too - ended up being $350 after I added my custom pieces to it 🙂

I’d like to get married in a field or wooded area as well. Can you tell me more about how you got permission to use this area? Did you pay for it? Was the land owned by someone you know?

My wedding was $5,000, but no one helped me. So half of my decorations didn’t even get used. All of my “friends” who said they would help showed up an hour before my ceremony to setup.....they are no longer my friends. It was mostly our mom’s & their friends who helped with food. My dress was custom made ($500) but looked NOTHING like the picture I sent the seamstress (who was my moms friend.) I almost just bought a $200 much more beautiful dress right before my wedding. My venue was beautiful though! It was an outside wedding at an equestrian center. I also had no alcohol.

My fiancé and I are long distance and most of our savings are going towards visas.... we’re trying to have a wedding for 1k. Got my dress for 250 and I’m in love (it’s a floor model people tried on so it’s got minor pilling. The dry cleaner can get that off easily . Just a tip for other budget brides).
@OurKindofCrazy4 жыл бұрын
So smart! We did long distance too. It's so much better to save on your wedding too!

Our Kind of Crazy long distance is CRAZY hard but it has its benefits I think! Makes you so close and good at communication. Dang I’d love to have some of your insight on planning! I’m based in Texas and my Fiancé is in UK so it’s kinda messy planning 😂

Very old and late comment. But just so you know and others in the future. Traders Joes has an amazing return policy (even if you open the item) you can still return it for a full refund. So those who plan on using trader joes in the future and want to buy wine but do not know how much, buy more than you need and just return the unopened ones.
@salty14005 жыл бұрын
Don't forget to check with your state law first to see if you can return alcohol :)

We spent around $4,000 for a full sit down dinner for 75 people at a very elegant waterfront venue, where we also had our ceremony. We asked for no gifts, and instead we sold dinner tickets at $40 for a three course meal with 2 glasses of wine. For an extra $10 you bought a ticket to the reception which was a valentine's slow dance event that we attend every year for our anniversary - which friends of ours put on with DJs and drag shows. All my decorations were hand crafted by me or were bought second hand, and I sold them all afterwords, making money off most things I had made, or breaking even on the second hand items I bought. My rings were included in the final total. Even my dresses - yes, I had two, were second hand and I sold the bigger one for what I paid for it. All in all, the best day of my life - with no debt.
