Its incredible how nowadays we can just navigate our way by looking at a small screen on our bike. In Belgium however, this is not needed. We have a network of numbers placed every couple of junctions. Along the road there are plenty of signs for directions to a certain number. This allows you to plan a route with just following the numbers that you have remembered or written down. I think this is an amazing idea and saves you from spending a lot of money on an expensive Garmin.

Well that´s Belgium... with 365 ppl for square km.. but in Britain there´s 250ppl/km2. In czechia we have 135ppl/km2.. not to mention that most people in Britain and in Czechia live in/around the bigger cities. Most of my rides I don´t even meet anyone on a bike let alone a proper cycling route. Well that´s why there such devices.. you could also use your phone as a Navi..the problem is that most phones are quite bulky and not very user friendly with gloves on. Also impact protection is basically zero so.. again point for navigations.. Also if you want to use garmin only for navigation you can get the cheapest one which starts at belgium´s average day salary.. Calling this a lot of money/ expensive or whatever is beyond the point.

A tip for you all, it may have already been said but here goes anyway. When I'm planning a route that passes over roads that I'm not familiar with I'll open another page and have Google Earth running and have it on street view. Many times I have planned a route only to find it passes down some shity little lane that's only passable with a 4x4 or it send me through a pedestrian area of a town. Hope this helps someone.

Good tip! I trusted my route and once and ended up walking across a deeply rutted field with cows in my cleats carrying my bike. I don’t do cyclocross!

I use my Garmin 920xt watch, just unclip from my wrist and connect it to my stem. Has a turn by turn map navigation too.It's a triathlon specific Garmin but does the job of an Edge

I use Garmin Trainer software to transfer my routes to my Garmin 920xt. It's old software but still available for download and easiest way of transferring GPX files.

Pro tip: add extra route markers while creating the route. This way your garmin unit is less likely to think you are "off-course".

To me, GPS navigation makes more sense on a bicycle than it does in a car. In a car, you just follow the signs on the major roads and you'll get there. On a bicycle, since it is better to avoid the main roads, there are a lot of turns on various streets. In Fort Worth, we have whole neighborhoods with a single road going in, but no roads on the other side that cross the river, or the railway, or the freeway. Some of my routes end up looking like a snake as I weave my way around undeveloped areas.

Make sure your course is short enough for your Garmin's battery. I mapped out a 50 mile course one time on a fully charged Edge 500 and it died around mile 30. Mapping out a course uses quite a bit of battery usage. Best suited for a race course. And always have a backup GPS like your phone.

+Jason Smith Not at all Jason Smith. The course consist rolling hills averaging 14mph for the entire course. Would stress that there is quite a few tree coverage giving the Garmin a little difficulty locking in satellites. Regardless, I have used the mapped course feature on several courses and notice significant battery drain compared to a regular breadcrumb ride record. Not saying it shouldn't be used. The Edge 500 isn't meant for long course mapping and the 510 or 520 aren't either. Just something to keep in mind for those who use this feature on a longer first time course or you'd get lost.

Sad to sat the Garmin Connect software is the poorest program for creating routes on, slow, glitchy and frustrating to use. Strava routes planned lack elevation data. Map My Ride and Bike Route Toaster work best for me, Bike Route Toaster has additional ability to add course turn point alerts and set estimated speeds for cruising, climbing and descending to get an accurate pace projection which will tell you how long the ride will take, depending on your riding speeds.

Hi! Great video thanks! I've a question - when I'm out on long rides sometimes especially in busy towns I might miss the right turn, or might choose a different turning. I've a 530, and rather than cope, it tries to force me to go back, it seems very dumb compared to Google maps, that instantly recalculates best route to destination... The garmin does adjust eventually but in the meantime it can often force me to stop to work out the best way on my phone instead... Any advice much appreciated ?

A very useful tool for route planning is BRouter, brouter.de/brouter-web - you can select a number of waypoints and then select the type of route you want - fastest, shortest, car, trekking bike, safety. The latter produced very interesting routes when I used to cycle in Bangkok, and chooses back roads in the UK (It uses OpenStreetMap data). This is an example of the safest cycling route from Arbroath to Montrose, in Scotland, brouter.de/brouter-web/#map=12/56.6118/-2.5911/standard&lonlats=-2.587477,56.561879;-2.468797,56.710882&profile=safety - try changing the dropdown to see the route change. PS pro tip, use the 'q' key to quit adding more waypoints

Exploring before GPS existed was a true adventure. Take a wrong turn and you could easily add another 50km to your ride by accident. But I found I was always riding conservatively for this very reason. When GPS came around I got way more adventurous having the confidence I know where exactly where I'm going and how much longer.

I find that the routes on Garmin 520 aren't very helpful. Maybe I need to download a more detailed map on OpenStreetMap but my wife and I lost both times we downloaded a route a friend made and used the Garmins to try and follow. The warnings are very quiet, they often don't give much warning (for example, less than 500' warning for a left turn on a multi-lane road), the map is so zoomed in that even if I'm .1 miles away, I can't see how to get back it just says "Off course" and there is a north facing arrow and nothing else. If I'm on the map screen, SOMETIMES it gives up to a 2 mile head start before the next turn. Sometimes it doesn't. That also means I cannot use my data screen to check cadence, heart rate, etc. My data screen sometimes gives a warning when I'm coming up on a turn. Sometimes it gives .2 mile warning, sometimes .1 mile, and sometimes the first time I know I missed a turn is when I get the off course warning. Hopefully I forgot to change my settings like Si mentioned early on or I can fix my issues with a better street map. But downloading GPX courses from a friend's MapMyRide and trying to follow it on the 520 has been trouble when in an area I don't know. I'm not saying that courses are useless. We did our first imperial century a couple days ago using a route a friend made. We were able to follow his course most of the time. We got a bit turned around in the city. And had to look at his map on our phones and just find a major intersection to get back on course. And another time we decided to skip some climbs since we were 70 miles in, getting tired, and were running out of daylight but left our headlights in the car. We ended up on a relatively busy road with no bike lane because getting us back to the course is not easy. Turns out we were just a half mile road east of the road our friend took. But there was no way to tell that on the Garmins and we were trying to get back to the car to get our lights before it got dark out. Poor planning about the lights. I estimated 7 hours moving time and 1 hour rest. Ended up at 101 miles in 7.25 hours moving time with 2 hours of rest/getting lost. We did the last 10 miles in the dark with our lights. Riding away from the car 90 miles in was not easy. I just wanted to put the bike on the rack and go home :p

Creating a route is easy but knowing how friendly it is to you or your bike is hard. A virtual Google map to see the roads would be nice after creating a route. No fun plotting a route you probably shouldn't ride.

Hi I have a garmin edge 800 and if I use it like a sat nav and select my destination I can have it on the training pages then just before I get to a turn it beeps and brings up a screen telling me where to go then goes back to training pages but if I make a route in garmin connect then download it then do that route it does not do that does anybody know if there is away to make it do that thanks

Draw a route with the planner or create one from an existing activity. Download the desired route to a file and place it in the NewFiles-folder of your Garmin through USB. It should show up in Courses now.

Wish Garmin would fix the route recalculation for when you go off course!!! Very very annoying... At the moment it doesn't recalculate (if set to prompt or auto) it simply says off course... Surely if they they can get it to work on the car/ phone sat nav it can't be that hard to get the bloody thing working on the bike ones??? Even though the function is there they have turned it off in the software update so even though you think it's on it's actually not!!!

Is it just me, or are many people buying into the notion that they have to have at least a £2000/$3000 (or more) bike to be a respected rider? What do the ones who can't afford it do? They finance the bike. If you told 10 year old me that people will want a bike they can't afford so much that they will get a loan to buy it, I'd have called you crazy. Back to the topic of the video, why anyone needs a £500 GPS to ride a bike is beyond me. Will I get street cred if I blow £150 on a Castelli jersey? Is cycling the new golf? Please tell me my position and cadence are more import than having GPS mounted on a carbon bar. (End rant).

Use Google Maps/Google Earth to find new roads/routes that you didn't know existed, my friend!! I use Google Maps/Earth to discover new roads, then build my route in Garmin incorporating old and new routes. And if you've ridden every single road near you, try them in new directions and different orders. I ride over 12,000km/year and I'm still finding new routes near me (having lived where I do now for three years).
