Welcome to my guide on how to plant a climbing or rambling rose against a fence or a wall, the process is exactly the same whether you’re planting a bare plant or a potted rose
Most of your research needs to take place well before you get to this stage please make sure that you have done your research and are choosing a variety that is not going to swamp or overtake your structure climbing and ramblers reaching in excess of 20 to 40 feet need to be approached with caution or you will enter into a lifetime battle with the plant that is only ever trying to reach its full size
Often the variety that you choose should leave you wanting just a little more also consider some large informal shrubs at this stage varieties like Mill on the floss buttercup, and the ancient Mariner do very well fan trained against a standard sized wall
Consider the orientation of where you’re planting to flower properly a climbing or rambling rose is going to need between four and six hours of direct sunlight per day if your wall or fence gets less than this considered planting something else, don’t hesitate to drop me a comment below if you want some suggestions
Always make sure that you plant your rose at least 45 to 60 cm away from the bottom of the structure and angle it back towards it at around 35 to 45°
Concrete block Work and brick suck up a huge amount of moisture from the surrounding soil and this 45 to 60 cm will give the plant a little bit of soil between it and the wall-protecting the roots
Don’t skip setting up your supports at this early stage Vines with straining wire or trellis work is key
Climbing and rambling roses will eventually become large plants and therefore will need large amounts of water and mulching of the entire root zone which if planted against could run several metres in both directions pay attention to your watering especially if your wall is facing south or west and taking the heat of the afternoon sun it will continue to cook the plant during the evening meaning it will need more water than usual
