Three sisters are originally grown in mesoamerica. They're not grown with sweetcorn. They're grown with field/dent corn because that is what is used to make masa for tortillas, tamales, atole, etc. These types of corn will just dry with the beans, no rush to gather. The corn will be dried and dented in, ready to ground. The husk will be very papery for tamales, the beans will rattle They're so dry and the squash will be just right for the season. So if you do this with sweet corn and it needs to be harvested in a timely manner, you'll be walking through a jungle of beans and squash that are not ready to gather. I've thought of how you could time it differently, but ideally, you want your corn stalk up for your beans to grow up. Maybe it would have to be grown later in the summer to be gathered when the squash is normally gathered. I'm not really sure how it makes very much sense with sweet corn unless it's a very small crop of corn and you can just reach in. Unless you really space the corn apart. Also, if you read "la milpa" info, it will help to understand a little bit better. You know, I know the Ancestors up here had to have a good system down but it seems very few know it anymore. I bet you'll figure it out and master it by trial and error.

Nice info, but Im sure the planters would adapt to their environment and technology as well

@MrDeanmfitz I'm sure they can, but I've yet to find successful planting that worked well with sweet corn. You'd break lots of vines before crops are ready. But knock yourself out 👍 either way, the original way works properly. Have fun.

I grew some Indian corn one year for the kids. In June, a windy deluge came along and blew over all the corn, including the sweet corn. I added to pick up and rebuild the sweet corn hills. But the Indian picked itself up! Smart, sturdy stuff, ehh? Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Nice video. Good to see someone that actually gave an update on their 3 sisters bed. I've seen tons of videos of people setting them up, but never an update. Kinda made me weary of starting one lol.

super informative video - thank you! came at a perfect time for me as well since i planned to add sunflowers to my three sisters garden this year and was nervous they would throw a lot of shade. glad to see it worked for you. the info on squash planting is great too, and may change where i plant mine. most diagrams i looked at indicated at least two plants per mound of similar dimension.

I've seen a few videos about the 3 sisters method and I must say I like yours the best. What are the measurements for your beds? and what's the distance Apart Have you planted the corn.

Lovely video, I really enjoyed it! Thank you. Question. What's the depth of your raised bed? I'm considering doing 10" or 15," since I'm not sure if 10" would be enough.

Was there any sunflower seeds left to harvest for yourself? Or did the squirrels eat absolutely all of them?
