I just bought a house last January. I have done everything myself with the exception of the concrete. I am now at the stage of putting in my palms. I am basically emulating your life with beer , backyard and good vibes. minus the kids. LOL

Hey James, amazing how you grew that washy from seed. I saw one, about the same size, at Sheridan Nurseries for $149! You have inspired me to grow one from seed. I grew a red yucca from seed and am trying a yucca rostrata, However, the rostrata seeds are being stubborn. You are absolutely right, it is a great hobby. Thanks for the updates.

Lots of good soil there, glacial till etc. I call that a clay loam. I had very similar soil when I lived up north. Great for growing gardens and nice green lawns like you have. Are you on a slab or a basement? Not sure if basements are common where you are but they where a given where I lived since we had to did 4ft down to get below the frost line regardless. I never saw a house without a basement till I moved south. Looking good bro!

I lost both my Mexican fans in the central Texas freak freeze winter before last. 😭 Even my 12 foot tall Windmill perished, and they were all huge. We lost power so we had to escape to our daughter’s place about 30 minutes from here. The thing I didn’t like about my Mexican fans were the very mean shark tooth spikes on the stems. So for hardy palms for here, my pick are the Windmill.

you could try growing washintonia filiferia they can tolerate up to -10 with minor damage and -17 with major damage but no lower. robusta is more tropical since it has a more southern range.

@@billyd7628 Unfortunately, my Washingtonias succumbed to that storm as well. I was not expecting a week of ice and snow sticking to my palms. I had Christmas lights on them. But neglected to protect the cores. My palms were upwards of 10-12 feet tall, and had survived well up until that freezing rain, ice and a good load of snow. And we lost power for about 4 days as well. Shockingly my canna corms, banana corms and most of my older Leander made it. But lost my Eastern redbud, loquat, rose of Sharon live oak and one of my olives.

Everyone kept telling me to put my washingtonia and my mule on a raised beds. I didn't do so. I did put the mule on a mound. Do you feel it's necessary to do this for drainage? for reference your soil looks very similar to mine. Clay, with large rocks but problems with flooding after heavy rains.

Hi James What’s the type of sand you used with the potting mix? I’m planning on getting some palm trees to grow in my backyard
@tommyhodges
@tommyhodges 4 жыл бұрын
Hey James I too would like to know what type of sand you used?
@sunnycharacter
@sunnycharacter 2 жыл бұрын
So, James didn’t answer y’all but I would use a garden sand, not the super fine kids sandbox sand. The fine stuff hold water too long whereas the rougher sand is looser. That’s what I use for mixing into my tropical plant soil mixes. You need good drainage.

You say "fast growing". How fast? I live in North Alabama and I just ordered a couple for around my pool that are supposed to be about a year old. Just wondering how long it will take them to get up around 10'.
@TheJames2929
@TheJames2929 3 жыл бұрын
They are very fast they could grow up to 3 feet per year so a 10 foot tall could be as little as 3 to 5 years old with your southern heat it could be only two years or so before they are around that height make sure you plant them in the ground right away give them lots of water and full sun and of course lots of fertilizer if you want to be grow fast
