This is so beautiful! Almost nostalgic to me of my childhood with flowers growing along our picket fence in front of our two story farm house. We would get all kinds of bees and butterflies. Going to probably do this again but also want to plant some milkweed, it’s been YEARS since I’ve seen a monarch butterfly; I recently found out that they’re now on the endangered species list. Makes me sad. Have to save our wildlife people. I remember when I was little we would have monarch butterflies by the hundreds! I use to catch them with my butterfly net my mom got me and would be very gentle and let them go, even had a monarch butterfly caterpillar cage where you could take care of them and watch them eat and grow and become beautiful butterflies and I’d set them all free in our flower gardens. 🐝 🦋 🌸

That seed shaker is a good idea, my only issue comes when you have a variation in seed size. I want to mix a Monarch friendly variety with Black Eyed Susan which are very small. Almost think I’ll need two different shakers. I see your cat was helping tamp down the seeds!
@ThisOhioFarmhouse3 жыл бұрын
If you are planting just a couple types of flowers with very different seed sizes I think making a couple different seed shakers would be fine. However, I think this issue is resolved by having a seed mix that has the proper seed portions and holes that allow the largest seeds to pass through. Think of it like salt and pepper. They can have their own shakers for more control, but you can also mix them together in the right ratio in the same shaker. You can experiment by testing your shaker over a sheet of paper until it looks like what you want. Good luck to you 😃

@ThisOhioFarmhouse3 жыл бұрын
I don’t remember exactly when we planted the seed mixture, but it was fairly early and probably not far off from when you planted in April. This video was created in August so it took 3+ months for the whole process. We did pay special attention to watering this area also. Differences in soil, local weather and seed mix will play a part as well. I will say that our wildflowers bloomed much sooner this year. We have been enjoying them since May! They came back just as strong. We will need to do some selective weeding in a few areas and we plan to plant another 1,000 square feet area and expand into other areas. It is our favorite part of the yard😀

@ThisOhioFarmhouse2 жыл бұрын
Depends if you have just soil or if there is grass or plant life. Soil, a landscape rake could loosen up the top enough to plant. You could mix in some good compost if you have it available and just break the surface of the soil open and mix in the compost with a rake. If there is anything growing that will all need to be removed first by either pulling or using cardboard to kill it off. You can check out my other video “From Grass to Garden” to see how to do that successfully. Good luck!

Spring and fall are the beat times to plant the seeds. If you plant in spring, you can plant when the soil is able to be cultivated and you have consistent days above freezing. Wildflower seeds will grow when the conditions are right for them and won’t be bothered by the cold. This is how they survive in nature. Just be sure to keep the ground watered until they germinate.

When can you start this in Ohio?
@ThisOhioFarmhouse Жыл бұрын
We wait until after the last frost date (early May here) and then seed them in. The soil needs to be warm enough for them to germinate and they need to be kept continually moist. Planting too late gets a bit tricky because it’s harder to keep things moist and germination won’t be as successful.

We might also pick up another bag of this mix and reseed. we didn’t cut any of the flowers.
