I really enjoy watching how other gardeners do things. I planted 210 cloves last week. Zone 4 Atlantic Canada. 4 cultivars: Majestic, Great Northern, Susan Delafield, Red Rezan. The first 3 are porcelains, the fourth is a glazed purple stripe. I used a diamond grid pattern. My garlic patch is on a 4 year rotation. I am expanding my veg garden using the cardboard sheet mulch method over winter so next spring I will have more room. 400 sq ft to 600 sq ft plus I will add a 20 growbag portable garden on my deck and patio. My house is urban but I have a nice sunny back garden that has gradually been evolving into a mini food forest. I have apple and pear trees, raspberry patch, high bush blueberries, haskap bushes. I am looking at putting in fruiting vines such as gogi berries along the fence. I would love to have a small hoop house but our heavy snowfalls, 2-3 meters, must be considered. Food prices have increased here. Sharing knowledge is so important as many people have started their first gardens this past summer. The silver lining in a grim time.

looking back from present day to last october, many things happened ignorantly of me, just realized from a local grocery store owner that garlic takes around 9 months to harvest also, once asked a farmer why didn't he grow garlic from his field, he said that garlic brings pests to the soil do you have worries like this on planting garlic ? great to watch how they were planted
@TheDutchFarmer
@TheDutchFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know garlic works as a pest repellent, not attracting them! We don't have many worries when it comes to pests (or diseases). Take care of the soil and the soil will (nearly) take care of the rest. Physical barriers for some pests is a must!

I think ensuring you don’t have compacted ground underneath also helps. I noticed that with carrots I grew one year (first year I had ever tried growing veggies myself). I hadn’t properly prepared the ground for planting prior to, so my onions, carrots etc were quite small which I feel now was because the ground wasn’t set up properly from the get go. Ensure to do proper prep of the ground and soil beforehand and it should yield better results :) That’s my plan this spring! Doing a ton of research!
