Brilliant to get the soil to be moist first. I watched with interest because I have a backyard hill/berm of loose, sandy dirt that needs to be covered. It's 200' wide by 15' top to bottom with a 3:1 slope (it's 5' tall). That's a huge project, but your scaled down project has given me hope! The trick - I think - is to get the seeds scattered and pressed in without walking all over it because my feet slip and cause more erosion that the rain does, LOL!

yeah, moist soil helps a ton right out of the gate. You could also use one of the tips from one of the other commenters here and dig in very slight lateral tiers in the berm running parallel to the hill. Focus on getting seed to germinate in the grooves that way if erosion happens even a little the seed in the grooves (steps) largely stays in place. Also, working in segments helps make all projects easier. I work in segments all the time! If I try to take on more than I can do at once then nothing gets done.

@@TurfMechanic I really like that 'groovy' idea and working in segments... Hmmm... I think I also need to put down some boards running laterally and work in 4' chunks (do the lowest 4' first): That way I can reach and not cave in the dirt too much. One more idea I have: I have a long-handled paint-roller that has duct tape, shiny-side out, all around it (I use is to collect puncture-vine stickers) that I'm going to use to press seeds into the soil. It's a way of contacting it without stepping on or stooping down too much.

This is crazy... it feels like KZbin watching what I'm doing... I did exactly same as you did yesterday on my garden in steep area ... I seeded Italian ryegrass cuz it's getting colder in south Korea. Also it's cheap and very first time to put lawn seed on steep area so... just testing... If it's works well I should seed tall fescue next spring... oh ... this is crazy... thanks anyway... Good day!

Wouldn’t adding some baby soap help the water penetrate without beading off?

Same, interested I have a shady area at my back property

Fine fescue: A low-maintenance option that can tolerate dense shade, drought, and cold temperatures. It prefers drier soils and sandy soil works best. Fine fescue is often mixed with other cool season grasses for overseeding. Tall fescue: A coarse, wide-bladed grass that can tolerate dry, shady areas. It's drought-resistant, easy to maintain, and shade-loving.

Striperman nailed it, I'd add that I like Creeping Red Fescue as the choice fine fescue for the area because of their rhizomes. Over the years they will help the fine fescue blend in better to the rest of the yard since they will spread a little at a time into those areas. Also, if you plan on having a lot of activity on the shady area from dogs or kids for instance then you have to mix Tall fescue into the fine fescue. Fine all by itself won't have the wear tolerance to stand up to constant dog paws.

If trees are causing the shade you could try pruning them to allow more light through as well.

Fun project. How many hours of sunlight do you think it will get during the winter months? Do you have plans on a video showing how you built that wall? Looks stout. I don't trust that cat

LOL, that cat! :D - here in early Oct the space there gets direct sunlight from around 11am until 6:30, by dec/jan I expect it will get direct sun from around 11 until 4:30. Since it's all fine fescue and soil temps here never drop lower than 50 degrees for more thana day at a time I suspect the sheep fescue should stay out of dormancy all winter long year in and year out without fail. Summer though will be interesting since the spot will get probably 14 hours of sun every day. I'll have to wait and see what happens then. As for a video of the wall build, I only took minimal footage of the process. It was so labor intensive and I was so unsure of myself I didn't want to film much until I had some more experience under my belt. Over the next few months I build out the next wall section and will probably film a lot of that, probably make a "this is what I did" video that will bother all the actual hardscapers out there. LOL

why not pre-germinate?

He’s got some videos where he goes over that. If I’m not mistaken, he just doesn’t find it to be worth the effort. I kind of feel the same way, honestly. I do believe he does what he calls priming the seed - which involves soaking it for a bit in warm water before he puts the seed down? Maybe he’ll respond to confirm

I thought you where going to sow corn seeds on the hill??

I'm planning on whipping up a quick video on the corn that I'll put over on Turf mechanic Gardens channel www.youtube.com/@turfmechanicgardens - I planted 48 corn plants at the top of that small hill in May and to my great surprise we had a mid-May cold snap (with wind) that dropped temps down into the mid 40's that killed off most of the baby corn stalks. Only 7-8 of the stalks survived the cold snap and the ones that made it languished a bit. I left all the dead stalks there though, if you look for them you can kind of see them in the background in a bunch of my videos over the last few months. I'm leaving the top of the hilly spot flat and I plan on doing corn there again in the Spring, hopefully the weather will cooperate for me better.
