How to plaster a wall, a beginners guide/tutorial for the DIY enthusiast. Including how to mix and apply pva, mix plaster, apply plaster, and finish plaster. I will upload a video of how to prep the wall with bonding plaster and scrim tape soon. In this video I have made the plaster slightly wetter than usual as filming the job made the task longer, and I didn't want the plaster to go hard!

I owe you a shout out pal. I watched your videos last year. Did a small built in wardrobe to start, it was a bit dodgy but I got the hang of it. Anyway my house *WAS* 70% artex covering the walls, so it was either pay a fortune or have a go myself. I Ended up doing most of the house and even the sister in-laws dining room and lounge too. aswell as another mates hallway. I just wanted to say thanks for the instructions. I watched lots of videos but yours stood out as the clearest and most helpful. Top man, you got me out of a hole. (Before anyone asks we had the artex tested and there was no asbestos before I started.)

Thanks for a great video, very clear to follow! Looking to possibly plaster our hallway as the previous owner had glossed the walls and ceiling (several times) way back in the mists of time, and there's old fashioned chunky tapes exposed as well. We've tried lining paper with zero success, so I'm wondering if its possible for plaster to stick over gloss ok? It's no longer got a high sine and has a primer layer over the top at the minute
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 5 жыл бұрын
Hi jenny, if the gloss is sanded back flat and has a course finish, you may be able to PVA over it (twice) and plaster successfully providing the paint underneath has a good bond to the wall. But I wouldn't want to guarantee it has I've never done it before. Sorry if that hasn't helped. Thanks for watching.

For those people out there that don't have a machine to mix YES you can still do it by hand with a gauge trowel and get your hands into the bucket to break any large lumps with your fingers .... keeping your tools clean .. dry with a paper towel and then use a tiny bit of machine oil on your trowel to slow down the rusting process that way your trowel will last longer.... types of trowels there are plastic and wooden handled one I would say get a wooden handled one as plastic can slip in the hand....

Great vid. I have 1926 plaster that I'm skim coating (wall and ceiling) and some large damaged sections are drywall (gypsum wall board)...I'm confused about when to use a "bonding agent" like "plasterweld" vs. PVA vs. Water. Looks like PVA for drywall, plasterweld for exposed plaster edge/crack & Lath, and water for generally intact areas of plaster. Then everything gets a top coat of DAP Plaster Wall Patch (Mix of 60% Lime and some Gypsum with 2 hour working time). What you think?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, if patching up plaster on drywall, in the UK I would use a product called 'hardwall'. It's a filling plaster, mixed with the same method as the multifinish plaster in my video (finishing plaster). It can be applied a lot thicker to allow you to fill holes. You don't really need to apply PVA onto drywall/plasterboard as it is designed to take plaster directly onto it, but if patching up, you are likely to be going over old plaster etc, so always PVA the area to be patched up, and then apply the filling plaster (hardwall). This would apply when going over old walls that have an old plaster finish on them. The pva helps to control the absorbtion of the moisture into the wall and will prevent it drying to quickly and cracking. Then when that's gone off and smooth, go over that again with 2 coats of pva before plastering your finishing coat over the top. As for lath and lime plasters, it's best to get specialist advice as it depends on a few factors including what state the existing plaster is in. Often when plastering over or patching up old lime plaster, it will absorb moisture, and then when it dries out it cracks and can fall off giving you more problems. I hope this helps...a bit!

Great video! I noticed you PVA'd on a relatively flat wall. What if your wall is a bit of a mess to begin with? Do you strip it back to bare brick? If so, then what?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaun, a few options. You can dot and dab plasterboard sheets to the wall using the appropriate adhesive. Then you have fresh plasterboard to plaster onto. This however eats a few inches into your room due to the depth of adhesive and plasterboard. Option 2 is similar, you could battern the walls and screw plasterboard to it but this also uses up a few inches. You could use a filling plaster like bonding plaster or hardwall plaster which can either be plastered over the whole wall to create a flat finish, or it can be used to fill/patch the gaps if you only have a few rough parts. It can be applied much thicker than finishing plaster. Then you go over this with the finishing coat of plaster like in the video. But always PVA between the coats of bonding plaster and finish plaster. Or another option is to strip the wall back to brick, cement render it, then plaster over the top of the render. There are probably a few more options but they are the most common or logical ones really. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching.
