Thanks for the tips, very helpful video. I'm part of a club in the North East that runs large model steam trains. The concrete cast arches are tired and have suffered surface cracks and material falling away. I'm hoping that with the aid of your videos (watched the steps, and cills already), that I can make repairs to the arches and make them good. Much cheaper than making new moulds, knocking the old concrete ones out, and casting new ones. Thanks for your helpful videos. Wish me luck

Thirdly I have run my own very successful plastering and building business for over 25 years with many thousands of very satisfied customers. And finally I am not so stupid that I can’t see that so many plasterer work different ways and after 30 years I still love see how others work and as you obviously do the same going by how the read comments on you tube vids hopefully it might open your mind a bit.🤣

Great video and I'm contemplating having a go at rendering my ground floor extension. A couple of quick questions though, the first is I have an outside tap and the flue for the boiler on the wall so is it a case of ruling around them to try and get a flat wall and secondly is there a formula for coverage so I don't mix far to much or far to little ie 2 bags of sand 1/2 bag of cement per metre

Interesting video. Over here in Australia traditional cement render we do in one coat approximately 10mm thick, only time you’d do a scratch coat is if the brickwork was crap and you need to make the render thicker to compensate and get a flat surface. We use fine clean sand, cement and builders clay and add about a cap full of bycol (soapy type of liquid solution) to the water for the perfect mix! Without bycol the cement mixture tends to separate (water separates from sand & cement in the wheel barrow) and makes application a lot harder. No waterproofing in mixture and finished surface is painted.

@@awesomestepdad5311 hey mate, no it’s been almost 20 years since I was rendering full time so I can’t really help you out. To be honest it’s not something you can learn in a day. Theoretically it’s straight forward but in practice it takes time (I’d say a year) to learn and get the feel and understanding of.

Great video (as always). Quick question: I am new to rendering and need to patch a 10 foot by 5 foot section of wall from which the render has detached. I am considering using a silicon render for the top coat as I believe it has good hydrostatic qualities, and is supposedly easy to apply. Should I still use a sand and cement render for my basecoat? I have watched a number of KZbin videos (including some of yours), but I am still not clear on this.

Hi Blaine You have inspired me to render my wall adjoining my neighbour. It is a retaining wall as we are on a slope. there are drainage holes along the wall near ground level. the property was built in the 60's so there is some damp patches on the bricks. I obviously need to clean the wall and get all the loose mortar and eroded brickwork out before I start but....... do I need to treat the wall before rendering and if so what with?
