Adding the fretboard overlays to the lessons makes a massive difference and makes things so much easier to figure out

That's for people who doesn't read music... I really prefer read the notes ..and use different...fingering..and play every bar.(if you desire).changing octaves etc..etc👍🎶🎵

I mean just during videos. I watch a lot of instructional videos and my biggest complaint with most of them is that the instructor is usually very good but it gets tedious and monotonous after a while just listening to someone talk for 10-15 mins or more. The overlays are excellent, especially when you can't figure out exactly which notes the instructor is playing - or mentions some notes or a scale and whizzes right through it.

This is so incredibly helpful, and the added workbook is just icing on the cake. I grew up listening to Jazz with my dad and Jazz is one of the reasons why at 15, I chose to learn how to play the bass guitar. However, in 25+ years of playing bass, I never really learned how to play Jazz. Only recently, after I joined SBL Academy, did I start that journey of learning Jazz Bass. Thank you so much Rufus and Scott!!

@Jakobite -- good for you! Seriously! I'm a little farther down the bass road than you are -- in a coincidence, I've been playing for 53 years. But what makes what you're doing so cool is that you're doing it! I can't tell you the countless number of non-musicians who come up to me and then say -- always with a sigh -- I wish I could play an instrument, BUT I'M TOO OLD. I hear that from guys in their 30's! So I always say back to them, if you'd like to be able to play an instrument, why not just start now? And they'll say something about no, it's too late. So I'll say back to THEM -- what are you talking about?! "Too old" might apply to a sports career which favors the young and is soon gone for the athletes themselves anyway, you can start playing an instrument any time in your life, and you can play for many more years than any athlete -- look at B.B. King! They'll hem and haw, and if they say that they specifically wish they could play bass, I'll say YOU CAN! Hey, the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" on bass -- sit down and I'll have you playing that in less than 2 minutes! If I lose them there, then there's no hope because they're not even willing to try. So I guess they're content to go for the rest of their lives without trying because they're better at sighing. 😉 By the way, along the lines of this video, people will ask me how I learned how to play bass. I tell them it was from one single album -- and it really was. John Mayall's "Jazz-Blues Fusion." Get the CD and just listen to Larry Taylor. I was just a kid when I first heard that but when I heard his walking bass stuff the light went on and I said THAT'S how I want to play! If you practice and shed enough, you'll be able to play most of that within 3 years. If you stay on it, you'll be able to play ALL of it! 😁 Start with the easy stuff first -- play along with Satisfaction; a lot of Beatles, too. Get on Songsterr.com (yes, double r at the end). A great website with so many ways to help. I guess you can tell I'm all for you starting to play with the energy of your comment. Welcome to the Club!

@@4thamendment237 wow thanks for the lovely reply, i got my bass and 20amp last week, havent started playing much due to my night shift job, but my days off are coming up and ive added alot of youtube videos on bass for beginners to my new playlist, so im going to have a good practice session just shortly, thanks for the link to that site..its brilliant 😃 i bought headphones to plug into the amp so i dont upset the neighbour's aswell, i dont expect to be a good player anytime soon, but i do intend on learning the basics and try to improve, my wife kinda laughed when i suggested getting a bass guitar, but shes pleased for me now..plus i told her not to worry, she can be my roady hahaha 🤣🤣, thanks again for the reply and help, very much appreciated. 👍😎

@Jakobite you're quite welcome! I would also say if you've never picked up a bass or a horizontal stringed instrument, it may feel awkward at first -- I started at the encouragement of my best friend who played with the guitar. I was 12 years old and I didn't even know what a bass was! I thought rock bands were just guitars and drums. I had seen the Beatles on TV but I had no idea -- I thought it was 3 guitars and Ringo. And I remember those early days where my fingers felt really awkward while I was pushing these wires down on to a piece of wood which somehow made sounds. Having said that, here are two things to keep in mind -- #1. It might feel clumsy and you can't get the hang of pushing those wires down with one hand while plucking the right one at the other end of things, the more you keep at it the easier it becomes. You build momentum. You'll see. Don't get discouraged, just keep at it. It's at that point a lot of people quit. But it's like learning tennis for example -- yeah, you're going to be hitting the ball into the net all the time or those moonshots that land in the next court, but then you start to get better control and start to be able to volley -- maybe only 2 or 3 shots, but with that then you see you're getting the hang of it and it's like, hey, yeah, I can do this after all! #2. Bass occupies the unique position of being halfway between the lead instruments and the drums -- you're in the rhythm section while at the same time you play different notes like a guitar or keyboard. So there is as much a feel or a sense of playing bass as there is technical proficiency. So I always say, get a feel for how the band wants the song to sound overall -- either by consensus or other times there will be an identified Musical Director or "M.D." [no, not that kind 😉] who will give you an idea. So here's the bottom line of #2. -- Play what suits the song. Play what serves the song, and the whole band will sound better. Too many guys lean into it -- and not just bassists, on every instrument -- to try to show off. But the effort is ultimately a team effort, and as with a team, your goal is to be a good teammate. So play what suits the song. On the other hand, if you want to be one of those guys who wants to show off and be the center of attention all the time, maybe you should just put down the bass now and go see about a career singing opera. That'll work...😉

@jakobite -- one last thing. A wonderful side effect of learning how to play an instrument is that it really enhances your appreciation and enjoyment of just listening to music. Like me, you'll start to tune into the bass line in particular and listening to that while listening to the whole song adds depth and richness to listening to music. You'll see. 😁

@@4thamendment237 Thanks again...your enthusiasm is amazing, i bet your a fantastic player of the guitar, ive been a huge beatles fan since i was a kid, im scottish, and moved to england 12 years ago,and live 20 minutes from liverpool, home of the beatles 😃 my first efforts did feel clumsy and awkward, but i expected that, and it wont put me off, infact everything feels alien about it, ive watched some bass players on youtube all week, and it blows me away at how easy they make it look and sound, it must take years just to get half decent, i just want to learn some of my favourite songs so that i can play along to them, and im in no rush to get there, patience is the order in the court, im sure there will be some terrible volleys and net hitting, but its all part of the game, good or bad. 👍🤟

Rick Danko (of The Band came), Sir Paul McCartnry, and Jaco Pastorious III are my favorite bassists ever... I am primarily a guitarist raised on music on Beatles and Dylan... Jaco is so far beyond my reach I don't even want to attempt to learn a song by him, but I'd LOVE to hear something by The Band broken down... I've always loved Don't Do It (even though they didn't write it!) or The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down... I'd love help learning one of these, or ANYTHING featuring the great Rick Danko! That's far more my pace and style! Thank you for your teachings!

Nice job Rufus, one note though (pardon the pun), it is helpful to use lower case roman numerals for the minors when writing down changes using the Roman numeral method, but I’m sure you already know that. Cheers..

this lesson was excellent. however, IMHO, using just regular numbers is even easier still. formal music ed tends to use the roman numeral stuff. when i moved to Nashville 25 years ago and had to learn the Nashville Number System, it literally made chart reading/writing a %1000 easier. have never looked back. :) and it's an excellent tool for writing out jazz charts.

I’m not sure if you’re a fan of there’s but 2 of the best are Stanley Clarke and Abe Laborial. I think they’re better than some of the spotlights you did. I was wondering if you will ever do a spotlight on them. I’d love to see one on each of them.

simplest method Kenneth learn the intervals of the scale then you can easily work out the chords within the key your playing in....learn the diatonic degrees and your laughing.....the 1-4-5 are major chords....the 2-3-6 minor and the 7 is diminished within the major scale.
