Hello all you wonderful people and a very Happy Birthday to Mr Jimmy Page!
Welcome to 2022; I hope you managed to get some quality time in with family and friends over the past few weeks.
Today we learn how to play Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin.
The song is a masterpiece; a giant one at that... so I decided to cover what I consider to be "main parts" that are integral to the song form. Basically all the good stuff. If you need any more help or are curious of the rhythm and secondary harmony lines it's in the Tab on Patreon.
Have fun.

This song was recorded in the Musicland Studio in Munich/ Germany. Owner was Giorgio Moroder and the sound engineer the extraordinary Mack. The Album Presence was recorded in threes day. Three days Mick Jagger was surprised afte he hear this. Who can this do?? Only Led Zeppelin!

Absolutely the best Zeppelin teacher. I was 14 and this song struck me like a thunder. I was mesmerized to the epicness of it. Who would have thought that 30 years later a funny cute English lad would lead me through the stairway to heaven solo and these days I'm with him in the dark woods battling with guitar in hand these amazing riffs and solos that are burnt into my soul. Really, thank you Sped. you changed my life.

This song is a beast but your lesson made it playable, even the solo! Back in my "I can't play guitar well enough so I'm going to play bass" phase, I decided the whole Presence album was going to be my bass lesson. When I could play it all straight through - finger style - without mistakes, I figured I'd have enough chops to learn other material on bass and feel like a legit bass player. That time probably seared the melodies from this song into my head, which made things a bit easier learning a solo I never imagined being able to play.

So glad you finally got it! I think this might be Page’s masterpiece, it’s laced with genius riffs, licks and angular rhythms. Some of his best work. The solo is inventive and expressive. I could listen to it on repeat.

Thanks again Sped. I’ve been working my way though a number of these Zep songs. Some of them I hold off, waiting until I’m up to the task. I’ve recently taken on this epic song. I’ve got the huge “official” Zeppelin tab book and it is super helpful. But sometimes even when the notes are right in the tab, where you play them makes more sense. That and what you’re playing for the “fiddly” bits at the end makes more sense and I really appreciate what you’ve done here. So, thanks again and keep up the good work!

appreciate the work here. It is needed. On the Staircase, I would have sent out the notes, Its too big not too. I like your humor, approach with thoughtfulness. Jimmy is magnificent. You are a pro, and keep being so. I only answer in reply to your requests.

I waited so long for this video. Learned the entire tune with guitar tabs note by note took me a few months but needed to be taught the technique. Going to go back to square one with this tune cause you add so much flavor to the recipe.

@@SpedSpedding Definitely big difference! intro, riff, ascending 3rds, chromatic double stops got all that down pat. Video helped cleaned it up. I used to play the ascending 3rds just on the a,d,g, but that 6th E string gives it complexity. Solo was great! Glad to know that I'm doing some of it right. Struggled with hammer on and pull offs in the solo 29:13-33:09 when I was studying the tab, video helped tidy it up going to go throughout the week practicing all those exercises. Thanks man really appreciate what you do for the guitar community. P.S. What I want from the fridge is cold Dr.pepper and some cheese sticks lol.

Your playing highlights the beauty and power in the melody of this heartbreaking solo. It's Page's most lyrical solo.

admittedly I am a latecomer to the SS party and am catching up on all sorts of content as they pop up in my recommended videos. Man, do I ever love this album. And this track is one that I am constantly pausing and rewinding as the epic Bonzo fills are just so good.

I know what you mean, it could be twice as long and still get rewound. Those fills are powerful / mesmerising / enchanting all at the same time.
