Recovered from getting wounded in Afghanistan listening to Presence. Being crippled in a wheel chair on pain killers is inhuman. Achilles Last Stand got me running again. Robert will never know what motivation he's delivered into my life. His legacy is secured in everyone who appreciates his artistry.

Youre tragic story gives me hope so Thank You . And Thank You for youre service. I had a bad stroke half a year ago , I can walk but barely. And wobbly. Just have to keep excersizing. And ur right. The song is constant driving. It never gives up. Just rests subtly with tnterwoven cascading melodies. Cheers

Despite Page not being fond of playing it live, their performance of ALS at Knebworth remains my favorite. The sense of desperation, power & tempo in that perfomance was awe inspiring. It was almost as though they knew their time was coming to a close. Page spoke of vultures circling above. They wrote a seemingly song of repentance with Nobodys Fault But Mine. Plant worried about karma attacking the band. This performance felt like they were desperately racing against time, knowing that they had to give it all they had before the end came. It truly was the power, mystery and hammer of the gods!

@grobber1 If you think Ian Gillan is a better singer than Sir Robert Plant then you are delusional. I challenge you to go and listen to dio sing heaven and hell and once you have heard the original then go on KZbin and find Ian Gillan singing it with black Sabbath in the 80s. That is the most god awful butchery I've ever heard. He was just a one trick pony during the early deep purple years and that screaming gets old after one song, boring after two and then it's just a sad cliche being done just for the hell of it and you have to turn that shit off and listen to something else.

Hey Laura, I understand why you feel that way. Been a big fan most of my life, but for me plant has been a HUGE disappointment, especially since the 02 show in London 2010. Of which I was able to attend. His refusal to tour with the band for no good reason other than his ego is just wrong in my opinion. Especially after he said in one interview that it was because he didn't want "to be part of some jukebox " then he proceeded to tour with all kinds of musicians playing many different zeppelin songs. Some were just TERRIBLE performances because of the way that they changed them musically. He could've done a final tour after the 02 show, not for the money necessarily, but FOR THE FANS!!! They would have been able to control everything about the tour, venues, dates, etc...making it more comfortable for the band. Some have speculated that since he had SOLD the royalty rights to his portion of the zep catalog to Jimmy Page, that he wasn't going to do anything to promote the band itself anymore. I think that's its ego more than anything? Maybe I'm wrong?

When I was in 5th grade (1972 or 1973) a fellow student brought in a record for Show N Tell. He put the record on the Record Player, dropped the needle and out from the single speaker I heard “Hey hey mama say the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove”. The teacher immediately and forcefully yelled “TAKE THAT OFF” (stop the record). I’ve been a Zep fan ever since 🤘🏻.

Very interesting hearing about Robert”s lady friend who didn’t want to be left alone with ‘Achilles Last Stand’ on. It was the first Led Zeppelin song I consciously heard when I was eleven years old in 1980. I borrowed ‘Presence’ from our local library because I was intrigued by the cover. I can remember the sensation of unease I felt when the needle touched the vinyl and that extraordinary, twisted riff started. The music was so intense and mysterious, I felt somewhat overwhelmed by it and didn’t really like it at the time. Just two or three years later I had grown up enough to take it all on board and became a teenage Zeppelin fanatic. But I always understood that there was far more to the group than bombast and volume. ‘Achilles Last Stand’ is one of their finest moments and when I listen to the rhythm section on that song I want to laugh as they are just so damn groovesome!

Presence is a masterpiece of timing and the reality of how well and how much Zep rehearsed. Only playing together and knowing each other can bring about that kind of nuance in synchronicity. Bonham has a real swinging southern jazz feel on some of the tracks but the riffs Page and Jones play, don’t get sloppy as they had a tendency to do sometimes. Tight but loose as they used to say, and Presence is the perfect musical statement to underline that descriptor of the mighty Zep. Really thankful for this podcast. 🙏🙏🙏

Perhaps Presence isn't the album to sit and listen to with your girlfriend, but it's my second-favorite Zeppelin album (next to the debut album), and one of very few albums I can listen to over and over for literally months at a time in my car and never get tired of it. Achilles Last Stand is my favorite track, WAY UP LOUD. Jonesy and Bonzo just give an assault to the senses with their thunderous roar, and Page's layers of guitars just get me way down there. It's hard to imagine Plant belting out those vocals on crutches! My buddy and I used to acid-test car stereo speaker systems with that song at full blast. Our neighbors absolutely hated us for that! LOL

I'm a big Zep fan from day one. I got to see them 4 times. 1970..75 and 77. For some reason I could never get into Achilles. I was a limo driver and I had just dropped off my passengers and I was free to go home. I was out in the burbs and on the highway heading to Vancouver. I probably lit one up and turned on the radio. Achilles Last Stand just happened to come on. Well all of a sudden...I got it... I got. The head started to move the foot went down on the gas pedal and I was off. I love Achilles. I was 26 wen I first saw them. I'm soon to be 76 and love this band....even more than when I saw them. You just get to appreciate them more as life goes on.

@John Cornell that's ridiculous! If you understand anything about led zeppelin, you should realize that after every album, the band would purposely move in a different direction musically. The SRTS is an electric guitar 12 string masterpiece. The tempo is constantly relaxing and then taking off again.....Obliviously with a Achillies, it starts off slow but jumps into a hard fast tempo that really never stops until the end. Where it graciously ends the way it began, genius! The band as a whole at their best!

I like Plant’s comments about how good the musicians were, I think he is a great vocalist. I also really like the Presence album. It’s great.

Masterpiece song. And Presence is my favorite Zeppelin album. I think this album is less popular with mainstream audiences because it's kind of a progressive rock album. Most of the songs are pretty long and complex. This is an album for the connoisseurs.

IM from Australia Robert and things have changed since Perth ,you need to feel the spirit of the out back it is something you cant deny 40000 years of aboriginal culture is reason why. As you know people love you hear but go bush with a small crew and sit around the fire and relax and feel the dreaming ,the real spirit . Every zeppelin album takes me to a time in space, love you man.

Each Zeppelin album is a masterpiece in its own right. 'Presence' was yet another different direction for the band, in a career that had often saw many different directions, and yet the band were very rarely ever given any credit by the critics for those experimental journeys into heavy, and light, Celtic, and Moroccan. Blues, and Rock. Classical, and Country. This was a band that could do it all, and they did. 'Achilles Last Stand' is one such breathtaking journey. Epic indeed.

The reason I like music so much is that it takes a lot of people to put a show on and that unity has such a healing effect but more it helps you connect with a long lost energy. That is why Led Zeppelin and Robert plant send us away to me the imagation and empthany in song is life not sickness 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈👏👏👏 And one heavenly song in hell 🌈😎

It is my favorite Led Zeppelin song & and in my top 5 of all rock songs. It captivated me when I was a young man in 1991. “What’s this title of a song?” I wondered. Some ten minutes later I was stunned at the beauty, magnificence, and mystery of it. I even learned how to play it right through.

You go to all of these amazing places, but when I think of Led Zeppelin, I kind of think of myself being stoned at the local park with friends, a frisbee, guitar, and believe it or not, a cassette tape player. Those were the days.

I remember reading about the horrible accident in Greece. 1975 was obviously a very difficult year for Robert and his family. I'm glad he got through it, and wondering how Maureen is doing now? Sounds so painful. I hope she is doing well now. No easy way for this type of thing. Robert has had his share of tragedies. I am so glad he stuck with music, since his music in my opinion is very healing for others in difficult times, including myself, and I think for himself and family also. I have the greatest amount of respect for him and what he has endured and of his sharing his music and life moments with his fans worldwide who adore him. Thank you Robert for your amazing music and sharing of your personal information on these podcasts. Very generous of you. No wonder your fans think the world of you, rightfully so. I can't imagine a world without Led Zeppelin music as well as Roberts solo music. The best music on the planet. Again, Thank you so very much. You are much Loved. De from Portland Oregon.

I was always a passing Led Zepplin Fan. I had 4 on vinyl, and wouldn't change the channel if they came on the radio, but didn;;t spend much time seeking out anything else. I had never really heard of this song until a few days ago and I am AMAZED this didn't get the airplay in the 80's like all of the other great Zepplin songs. This is probably one of my favorite Zepplin songs now.

Wow. Badass. To hear this all these years later is so inspiring for me as a musician. I think every rock musician I know began their journey as a lousy Led Zep cover act. Once heard, the music demands action from artistic people. If you didn't know how to play, then dammit, you learned.

Since I was a teen in the 70's I loved Led Zeppelin. But Achilles Last Stand held me even till today. Besides its fantastic words and awesome sound, greater than any other band to me. I've had an affinity for the Song. I myself was injured in a crash in 94. In 2011 I became wheelchair bound. Been on disasince 2003. I know the destructive nature that serious injury tolls on a family. Your podcast about Achilles Last Stand made me cry because I do understand. Keep on getting out there Robert. Some of us LIVE vicariously through others and Led Zeppelin has given me years of enjoyment. A Lifetimes worth. I love you man.

Achilles last stand is a Fantastic song, & the 1st song that i heard after stairway, its raw & powerful, it has depth, & meaning, the thing about Zeppelin is that they have so many great songs, its really difficult to pick one over another, its my favourite, its up there with "the song remains the same", & Kashmir, yes its that good, all four of them are in tune with each other, as much as 4 musicians can be.

Probably my most meaningful coincidence ever involves this tune. I had been the typical Zeppelin-obsessed kid, they were everything to me, I literally credit discovering their music as a young teenager as "waking me up." Some years later, I was a 22-year-old Canadian travelling in Greece and immediately became close with this amazing Athenian girl. She was/is a philosopher, and being around her completely changed my life again; while there I decided I would study philosophy, so being around the all these monuments of ancient Greece was just so meaningful to me. One day we went to visit her brother, right in the heart of old Athens, the Acropolis looming nearby, and as we walked into his apartment he was absolutely blasting Achilles Last Stand.
