Hey everybody!! I've had several comments on this video about me looking like I am high, baked, toasted, etc. Just want to let everyone know that I actually have a "droopy" eye (the right one). I had some paralysis around it several years ago and some of the muscles never came back. Some days it droops more than others and I guess this was one of the "more" days. I call it my "Thom Yorke" look. Feel free to keep making comments about it - I have found them quite amusing! All the best and thanks so much for watching the video and commenting!!!

I recently played a baritone Squier Classic Vibe retailing for about $400 and change - tuned from a 5th down or A to A and it was majestic sounding. The baritone shines playing 2nd and 3rd inversions or positions of chords with or without pedal tones mixed in. Very cool.

I love how even though you don't typically play heavy metal yourself you're still respectful of those who do and say "hey yeah, this guitar may be able to do stuff like that, so for those of you who want to go try it. " Many musicians happen to be very opinionative people. Also that barritone guitar plus the pedal your using sounds like an ocarina or something of that nature. It's beautiful.

Hey that was a nice video explaining a little bit about the baritone guitar. (For all of you who complained or disliked this video for too many volume swells and super delay and echo; you should have seen it coming by the title. "AMBIENT GUITAR". So dont expect something different.) It isn't a guitar that one will hear very often. I am a musician myself and have never played a baritone six string yet. I have tuned my normal guitar to low B standard just for fun. Something alot of metal players do using 7 or 8 string guitars more commonly. Drop C is the lowest i usually go but i always find my way back up to standard E. So i listen to all kinds of stuff. Coming home today i was listening to prime country on sirius radio and Dwight Yoakam came on with Little Ways. one of his classic best. i asked my wife if she noticed how low the lead guitar parts were and she said yes is that the bass? I said no it would have to be a baritone guitar and she said whats that? I am not an expert on Dwight Yoakam but i could tell by hearing it that it almost had to be. So here we are on this video right after watching that video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZPJl3qGgpefosU Sure enough there it is and i never realized it before. Same type of fender baritone guitar in both videos as a matter of fact. How bout that! Thanks for the viDeo.

I use 10-46 strings on baritone guitars and tune to E standard. I like the feeling of the extra tension. Also, the fact that the frets are wider apart makes it easier to play in the second octave since your fingers aren't scrunched together.

You're right about the addictive nature of baritone. For anyone wanting to take the plunge, try a Danelectro baritone. Not only is it relatively inexpensive, but Danelectro pickups tend to be light in the lower mids which somewhat takes care of the mud problem mentioned in this video. Happy baritoning!

I downtuned my Fender Aerodyne strat to B using 013 gauge [it takes it laike a champ, no mods needed] couple of years ago. Love the sound of single coils with the B tuning. Reverb and a tad of Delay and it gets as addictive as drugs. Next, a Squier Bss VI.
@chordsoforion8 жыл бұрын
Cool. Do you normally run .010s or .009s? I pulled up one of the online string tension calculators and it looks like there is only about 2 pounds difference between a .10 at E vs. a .013 at B. I can see how it would work...

This was fantastic. Just curious, if a capo was used on the fifth fret would that brings the pitch down to a normal guitar range and thus no more transcribing the chord shapes? This, if my assumption is correct, adds versatility in that with the addition of a capo on the fifth, everything shift back to standard pitch/tone, yes?
@chordsoforion7 жыл бұрын
Yes - when using baritone "standard" tuning (BEADF#B), a capo on the 5th fret will get you to EADGBE. Here's a caveat to be aware of - the usable scale length is a good bit shorter than a standard guitar, so it will not feel like one. Also, the tonality from heavier gauge strings is different, so that aspect does not change either. But, definitely something to play around with!

My buddy put his jazzmaster into b standard. It needs thicker strings (they are only big 11s) but it gets the idea across. We've been writing cool spacey ambient parts on it. The low tuning has that cool inbetween sound to it and it really helps set it aside from standard guitar tones.

Great video. Everything you need to know about a Baritone is here. I bought a Gretsch Bass 6/Baritone. It has a 29.75 scale length plus a Bigsby vibrato which makes getting strings that are long enough a bit of an issue. Even Ernie Ball Bass 6 strings have the two middle strings too short. To get what I consider to be my ideal string gauge I have to buy both Ernie Ball and D'Addario sets and make a set out of the two packs. It does prove a bit expensive. I do swap between Baritone and Bass strings. I like the fact that the Gretsch will take either gauge with no nut filing. I've recently started using very light bass strings tuned E-e and use a capo to give me different tunings.

No, you cant play everything you can do on a Regular guitar, because when you tune all strings down that much (Perfect Fourth), even if you play the 22th fret on the e string (now an b), you wont be getting a "high note" (comparing with a regular tuned guitar), so for solos, you sometimes miss that high notes

I've been playing for the last few years in various opening tunings: Open D, G, C and even Open B. As of late, I have been experimenting with Open C on my "standard" Fender Tele, my Danelectro Semi-Hollow Electric 12-string, and even on my loyal and trusty old Martin D28. I love the full low end sound and play a combination of chords and arpeggio, straight pick, flat pick, and some finger pick. Open B is the lowest of the ones I attempt using, but sometimes it drifts from staying in tune. What I really like to know are the effects/pedal your using here. I like the sound of it in the low end. I usually use a combination of delay, chorus and reverb built into my Fender amp, but without a pedal.

The point of baritone guitar is that you DON'T need to use heavier strings for lower tunings!

why wouldn't you?

Andrija Sentić also you can have a lower action without fret buzz in lower tunings on a baritone. There are lots of uses for a longer scale length, not just lighter strings.

it's not about need, some of us like playing with heavy strings. they also sound very different and can really round out a baritone. I mean, I play flatwound 13-56 on a tele in normal tuning. it simply does not sound the same as a lighter string. no I do not play metal.

Is it just me, or is this guy the Bob Ross of guitar?

Joe Neigel - damn, I was thinking exactly the same thing when watching the video.

Great video. I play baritones almost exclusively (27" 6 and 8 stringers). Another advantage that made me love the baritone is that your fingers are less cramped in a larger fretboard. I find Gibson's 24.75" fretboards very difficult to play on. Also, you can have variations in tuning higher or lower (just use lighter strings for higher and increase size when dropping to avoid string flop. I have mine tuned 3 semitones down and use 10 or 11 gauge string sets w a heavy bottom (52 or more on the 6th).

It probably sounds more natural with a baritone guitar, but my effects emulators have a detuning function that creates a very similar sound on a normal guitar. So, the poor man's solution is an electrical FX processor system.

Fantastic video. I just got a nice baritone acoustic that I'm really looking forward to using. You pointed out some neat things I hadn't thought of, and I thank you kindly.

Chords Of Orion yea it almost makes you wonder by the tones in your video if David Gilmour ever played around with one of them on their albums! Although I'm sure it's well documented what gear he used so we could easily find out! Haha
