Hi and thank you for your good work! I compose mainly in uneven (odd) time signatures, because I'm from Bulgaria and our national music is in odd time signatures - seven eights, eleven eights, nine eights etc. The 9/8 by the way we play with prolonged fourth time - 2+2+2+3 or ta-ta-ta-taa. Very good lesson! Thanks again!

A good example of a 9/8 piece is 'Apocalypse in 9/8' from an early (Gabriel era)Genesis album 'Foxtrot' 1972 from the piece called 'Supper's Ready. Incredible for getting your head around the 9/8 time signature. Took me ages in 1972 when I was a 16 year old.

something nice: you don't always have to go fast! usually going slow is good :) apocalypse in 9/8 (a section from the genesis song 'supper's ready) is a good one for 9/8

Great lesson. Best explanation I've heard and I've been watching time signature videos for a month. All of them were too technical. Biggest difference was that you said time signature = RYTHM, as opposed to bpm/tempo.

FYI - Indian Music has this 10 bit cycle called Zaptal. It is counted as 12 123 12 123. f course there are many variations to this, The 7/8 cycle is call Taal Rupak - 123 12 12.

please break down something basic of MESHUGGAH...am 53 years bassist noob and I think Meshuggah resonates within me.....not a fan of the vocals but the riffs and time signatures are amazing. so I think you have the key to break down their ideas and go over a few basic meshuggah-type riffs. Hi. This is something i'm working on: My question. In 7/8 or any odd time when counting 2 and 3s should you try and keep the quarter note with your foot. For example if playing 12, 12, 123 in 7/8 would you would squeeze 12, 12 on first pulse and 123 on second pulse as in 6/8 rather than the foot moving 3 times with each group of 7.?

There are a lot of Irish folk songs written in 9/8 like the butterfly, right? Or are they in 3/3 with a rest?

In Celtic dance music, jigs (6/8), slip jigs (9/8) and slides (12/8) are respectively, 2, 3 and 4 beat rhythms. But each beat is a dotted quarter note so it divides into 3 rather than 2. So, for example, a jig is counted 1 & a 2 & a, a slip jig is 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a, etc. 5, 7, 9 and 11 rhythms are really common in dance music from Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia (I suspect you meant Balkans rather than Baltic.) Look on YT for Kopanitsa - it's in 11, counted 2 2 3 2 2, or 'quick quick slow quick quick'. Kalamatianos is a Greek dance in 7, counted slow quick quick, Rachenitsa is a Bulgarian dance in 7, counted quick quick slow. I think there's a Macedonian dance called Cocek in 9 that goes 'quick quick quick slow'. For all of these, quick = 2 beats, slow = 3. The idea is that all beats don't have to be the same length!

ya i can play that and i have been takata'd at before but i am compleatly lost. all the beats are the same measure of time right? so whys it not all 1/1 music, a beat is a beat right?

The time signature isn't just an instruction on how long each beat is -- it tells you how the song uses beats to create movement, and how long beats are. 1/1 time would just be counting out beats, and wouldn't bring you any closer to understanding the piece you're playing. Most music is 3/4 or 4/4, and I think if you really want to feel how different time signatures change music, I'd suggest studying folk music some, because folk music usually has the best examples of putting odd time to good use. A time signature is basically a fraction, where the top number is how many beats make a measure, and the bottom number is how long a beat is. I usually look at the bottom number, first when dissecting a piece, because it tells me what I use to count, and then the top number tells me what I'm counting to. 4/4 is probably the most common time signature used, and . 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4. "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele, for example, is written in 4/4 time. Less common time signatures, like 7/4, are counted very differently, even though if you played the songs at the same tempo, the respective beats would be the same length. "Money" by Pink Floyd is the best example I can think of, because it switches back and forth, so you can really feel the difference. It's counted out 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (7/4) during the verses, and 1 2 3 4 (4/4) during the instrumental, and at the very end of the song. Listen to the songs and count out as you go. You should see and feel what I mean.

If you want to see the difference, visually, without needing to compare it to a song, here's what I'll recommend: Download Audacity or some other similar, simple music program with a metronome. Set one track to play 4/4 at 120 beats per minute, and then create another track playing a song in 7/4 at 120 beats per minute, line them up at the very beginning, and then just listen to them.

theres no such thing as 32. the top number tells you how high to count, the bottom tells you how fast to count. the bottom number can only be 4 (quarter note), 8 (eighth note) or 16 (sixteenth note).

You basically could. But it will sound just like 3 x 4/4 because we are use to it at triplets. So to differ that you just use 342 compossition. But dont forget one thing and that is that triplets are 3 notes played on 4 times (4/4 or similar) so basically you could count triplet style (123 123 123) but in the beat :)

a bar 5/4 is 1.2.3.4.5. steady slow count. no pauses. a bar of 5/8 also has no pauses but will go 1+2+3 rapidly and the time it takes to count 2 bars of 5/8 only a bar of 5/4 will pass. if that doesnt make sense or if u want to know about 5/16 then heres a good vid i was watching today. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnScloynjJx8l9E

Some odd rhythms are born from poly-rhythms, like 4 against 3 (often demonstrated by saying "pass the golden butter") and 5 against 3, which I like to represent as duh duh ga-duh duh-ga duh, if that makes sense...
