The most well crafted Clapton/Cream guitar solo. There are many, but this is my favorite. He makes it look easy. It isn't. But if you follow and duplicate him, he nails it spot on. Brilliant. Thanks for posting.

I dont understand how you can think of the solos so musically and slow them down in your mind, but yet still nail the feel. When I play stuff like this I have to feel out every note to get it right, couldnt imagine teaching it. Excellent.

Breaking down & demonstrating this epic solo has been a dream of mine:I’m STILL WORKING ON IT eventhoe you’ve shown it note by note, im just gassed that 1 guitar-playing-human could have improvised such an aweenspiring piece of solo work!!& YOU FIGURED IT OUT ON YOUR OWN!! I’m eternally humbled!! Rik in AZ-USA

This is the best tutorial I've ever reviewed on what I'd say was Clapton's most emotionally moving guitar solo. Was always disappointed at the live versions of this song as the studio version in my opine was the best never to be outdone by other versions. Again, much appreciated. All the best & stay well !!!

I was always amazed with this song. One of the greatest 2 minutes and 45 seconds in rock/pop history; verse, bridge, solo all epic. Clapton clearly at the peak of his playing with Cream. You nailed this lesson...as usual, excellent job. The truly amazing thing is the creativity of some of these great original artists who thought up this stuff in the first place, so powerful that we are inspired to mimic them. Interesting that Clapton never approaches this solo in any of his live performances, like with Crossroads, lightening in a bottle. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.

So GLAD you did this song. I grew up on the Clapton tree (Which really would be the Buddy Guy tree or the Muddy Waters tree). Yardbirds: Clapton, Page, Beck, Winwood...Cream, Blind Faith, Dereck ect..and this is my favorite of any of it. It is so short it is almost an afterthought..but not a wasted note and enough perfect hooks for 10 songs. Have you ever thought about doing "Heart Full of Soul? ...or any of the other Yardbirds stuff? Incredible hooks and leads. Kind of Clapton learning what he was doing. Or "Tales of Brave Ulysses"? Or..."Can't find my way home". I have seen other versions ..but no one arpegiates like you do. Anyway, as always...love the lesson. Best on the internet. Or anywhere else. Thanks!

Why should I play the solo with the Dm scale if the the song is in G? G relative chord is not Em?? Ps.: I'm a beginner ;)
@moreorlesslikeso3 жыл бұрын
I'd have to try it myself, really, but it might actually be D mixolydian (being the V to G, the alleged key of the song). Though the minor 3rd isn't actually in the scale, you can often sort of get away with it as it an alteration of the real chord tone (the major 3rd) which generally works with dominant chords. EDIT: Having looked into it a bit now, I think my first idea mentioned above might actually be not quite right... The underlying chords for the solo are D, C and G (in rather quick repetition) and you can well argue if that constitutes a progression in D (in a more Blues/Rock modal way) or in G (in a more conventional diatonic way with C as the subdominant and D as the dominant of the G tonic). This is actually the same progression as in "Sweet Home Alabama“ and I've seen this very same question asked about the key (to solo in) concerning that classic... To my feeling, however, it just sounds cooler if you think "D" for the solo and primarily use the D minor pentatonic scale (or possibly the D dorian scale, being the pentatonic with the 2nd and the major 6th added). As we are in a sort of "bluesy" context you should also add your usual "blue notes" (including bends to the major 3rd while on the D) as well as suitable bending and pre-bending to connect these to the scale's "regular "notes (including those cool inbetween "neither/nor" notes). This seems to work for me, anyway.

@@derekclacton Yes, that was a different era. Old school. Great encouraging influences. I lived in Westmont , Illinois back when Muddy Waters preformed every year for Pow Wow days in town. Muddy actually lived in Westmont too in his latter years. He preformed on stage sitting down the whole time playing the blues. Nobody complained that he was sitting down the whole time. All of us knew he was somewhat of a legend. He preformed for free in those days, musicians from all over the world came to see him in Westmont. A small town with some really cool memories.
