I think one of the reasons blue is so hated by newer players is that it’s the least immersive/most meta color. The word “card” feels like it appears on blue cards the most, the most iconic “you win THE GAME” spells are in blue, even milling as a win condition inherently interacts with play patterns more than board state. The way other colors win is by summoning a giant dragon or dealing a ton of damage from a fireball or some evil pact with a demon or something and I think the main reason people get started playing magic, at least commander, is because that top end super cool stuff is just super cool. Blue is the color that makes it a card game instead of an rpg. This is also what makes it one of, if not the most powerful color. Everything blue does is about attacking the game instead of the other player
@dancarne5501Ай бұрын
Interesting take - well said!
@abecascadeАй бұрын
With all due respect, I disagree completely on 29:20 . As a Blue player myself, I usually use my resources to control the person on my RIGHT side, because I know after this I get to my turn and untap all my stuff. When the person on your LEFT acts, you usually win on turn order priority because the other 2 person might have a response before you do. That's the logic why you dump big X spells like Blue Sun's Zenith at the latest possible end of turn, which is the person on your right.
@benbarclay4239Ай бұрын
Eh its a balance. You should really be controlling whoever is the most threatening to your own win, regardless of seat position.
@chickennoodles4491Ай бұрын
I think the logic is if you sit to the left of the blue player and make a move to win, they’ll counter it and now your other opponents are safer when they try to do so
@awilddevereauxАй бұрын
I think you're misinterpreting what he is saying. He's saying its advantageous (as an opponent of a blue player) if you're last in turn order before the blue player cause you have a greater chance of the blue interaction being used before it gets to your turn. There's not really anything to disagree with there. He's not saying you should prioritize the player to your left.
@JeffreyGoddin12 күн бұрын
@@awilddevereaux There IS something to be disagreed with there. On occasion a blue player leaves up mana for a counter and had nothing else to spend it on, yet the next two players do nothing dramatic. Oh what to do what the third player does absolutely anything of consequence. Oh, right. Counter it. Yes, the last person before blue also gets unfair attention. If anything, the position opposite blue is ideal.

My favorite pet blue card is "Telepathy". playing it on turn 1 is really funny. For those that don't know what it does: it is a 1 blue mana enchantment that says: "your opponents play with their hands revealed". so on turn 1 you know what everyone kept if you go first. I have it in my now massively nerfed High power Temur pirates deck (I removed all the banned cards from it) and I use it the turn I want to combo off to see if anyone is holding counterspells or interactin for my combo. in a way it is beter than a counterspell because you see everyone's hand and everyone gets to see all my opponents' hands

Speaking of Azorius and control and shooting arrows from the top of the castle. Harbin Vanguard Aviator, who I will never stop singing his praises, is the best artillery Azorius commander for me. Literally just build a board of soldiers, build up a pillowfort, and then fling evasive soldiers at my enemies while they cannot get in with damage. Combine the Ghostly Prison, Propaganda, Sphere of Safety, Windborn Muse, Baird Steward of Argive WITH things like The Wanderer and Blessed Sanctuary. It's just great. Add in a Maze of Ith and then some instants "No, you cannot kill me, I don't exist" cards and you have a recipe for winning a lot of commander games even against some pretty aggressive, combo heavy decks. Just dodge their big combos, remove the pieces, and then fly in for damage. It's wonderful. I can play it pretty slow against other people if I realize their decks are precons or lower power level like that or if they're just super new players and yet it can hold its own against some really toxically evil decks as well. Yuriko? Peace of cake. Niv Mizzet? Try not dealing direct damage to me at all. I've found the "pillowfort and evasive go wide" strategy works against almost every sort of deck I've played against so far. No it's probably not gonna last in cEDH but it absolutely crushes many games because people groan and say "uhhhhh I don't feel like using my 1 removal spell to destroy your Ghostly Prison, you're a problem but it will have to wait" and before that can happen they get player removed. So I either outlast or shut down enemy strategies meanwhile my army of Soldiers just overwhelms them whether from Strixhaven Stadium, Halo Fountain (by untapping 15 creatures which is super easy to do when you're running lots of 1, 2, and 3 mana creatures PLUS token soldier creators) or with absolute sneaky BOMBSHELLS like Starlight Spectacular that can make even a decent army become lethal with it's exponential growth in damage (for example, 5 1/1 creatures suddenly becomes not 5 damage, but 15 damage. Now imagine just 10 1/1 soldiers, it would be FIFTY FIVE damage, easily lethal and then some). Now that's without even considering other pumps to your soldiers like Lord effect creatures or the commander Harbin Vanguard Aviator. Azorius is my zodiac sign, lmao

1:13:48 Bounce is the superior removal. I don’t want to hear someone say “tHeY cAn PlAy It NeXt TuRn.” As mentioned, this is the color of extra turn spells, there’s no guarantee they’ll get another turn. Bounce generally is “non-land” meaning that every new card type added, it gets stronger. Other removal needs specific to hit planeswalker or battles. Not blue. The same stuff you have will hit that too. What you didn’t mention is that blue is the color of free spells. There’s 128 cards in mono blue that say “without paying”/“mana cost.” There’s nothing more powerful than “free.” No amount of ramp can compare. There’s also no downside to its spells. This is different than weaknesses, which are pretty minor as mentioned in that section. Green is expensive , because it can ramp better than everyone else. Red often has to sacrifice it after you use it, so everything is temporary (or you lose the game in the case of their extra turn spells). White still has very little card draw and inconsistent ramp. Black requires additional costs like sacrificing creatures or paying life. Blue gets all of their effects and asks for nothing. They should be tapped or don’t untap during the untap phase. Something.

Narset, Enlightened Exile is my favorite, and highest power casual Commander. It’s a very fun and flexible deck to play, but the Blue portion of the deck is definitely the trickiest part to play. My biggest misplays with my Narset have all been with Blue cards. The worst mistake I’ve made playing that deck was actually the first time I ever played Mana Drain. I counted the wrong spell and then completely forgot about the extra Mana it gave me on my fallowing turn. I could’ve used that mana to secure a victory but it completely slipped my mind because my anxiety was running high at the moment, and I was too focused on other players’ things rather than my own. That same game I also wasted a bounce spell to protect my Commander while I had a Teferi’s Puzzle Box on my board because I forgot about it for the same reasons. It ended up back in the Command Zone anyway so I should’ve bounced something else instead.

Funny, the section about Simic described why Yeva is my favorite commander.

My favorite thing to do with a sudden substitution in my Codie deck is to cast a sylvan scrying when I've already gotten all the mana I need to then swap it with someone else's creature

Glad you're still making content, Josh is getting a maaaaassive amount of hate from so so so many people online for joining the wotc commander group after what he said about the RC.

Along with a colourless How To Play, a 3+ colour deck HTP would also be really helpful.
