Can i also ask about the sound proofing you have there? What does it achieve for you? Should i have more or less in a home. How effective is it
@athomewithmusic86982 ай бұрын
The sound proofing is actually left over from when the room was designed as a recording studio. It was installed to keep the sound from the speakers from bouncing off the walls and affecting the mixes. It proved to be quite effective. Before I started this channel, I was an independent record producer, arranger and recording engineer. I operated my studio in Florida from 1990 to 2016. When I came to Asheville, I set up the studio and was set to continue, and while I did have some artists come to record here, changes in the music business and eventually the pandemic forced me to change course. I started At Home With Music in early 2021, and I am very glad I did! Eventually, when finances permit, this space will be redesigned and the soundproofing will be removed, as it really isn't needed for video production.

@ thanks. I find your methods match the way i think. I’ve been trying to write my own music i have made up myself without any theoretical background except what i have gleaned and by playing by ear. I’d like to know how Bach worked out his progression for prelude in C as it fits with the circle of fifths. (Even if he didn’t use it to create it, as i didn’t, when i wrote mine i started with words). I also want to know how to include the minor chords.

Im so lost bro. How exactly do I use the circle to understand finding major and minor seconds thirds 6ths and 7ths??? Im not getting it from this video... Like how do I construct the major and minor progressions. Like the 5th minor in a cminor scale for me I can't figure out to get it to sound right because I'm looking at it like let me go clockwise from the major then use a chord from the minor note in that major position. Thinking by 5th minor I look at the 5th major so I use the relevant minor note. Make a chord out of that. And it's still sounding off from when I see someone make the same progression online. Like I just don't understand how do I count the letters in order for every note to use the circle correctly ?
@athomewithmusic8698Ай бұрын
The circle of fifths is not usually used to find intervals like major and minor seconds, thirds, etc. Basically, the circle is used to identify key signatures, find the one, four and five chords, and create chord progressions. I can understand how you might feel lost since constructing major and minor chord progressions can get a little complicated.
@miked742710 ай бұрын
What does 7th mean? Thx. Great video
@athomewithmusic869810 ай бұрын
When I mention the 7th, I'm referring to a forth note that we add to the basic three-note chord to make it a dominant 7th chord. For example, in the video (at around 4:23) I mention turning an E chord in to an E7 chord. What I did was add a D to the E chord. D# is actually the seventh note of the E major scale, but to make it a dominant 7th chord, we use D instead. This makes the chord even more "dominant" as your ear wants it to resolve to A.
@SpeakerBuilder3 ай бұрын
Another way to think about this lesson is to consider these as borrowed chords. The three borrowed chords in the lesson are ordinarily minor chords in the current key, and they simply are designated as major chords, often with a 7th thrown in for flavor. For example, in the key of C, the chords of E, A, and D are within the key of C but as minor chords, and this lesson simply plays them as major chords, where the root and fifth of those chords are the same and the only change is that the third of each chord is sharpened to make them a major chord. Jazz songs do this borrowing all the time, not only on the chords to the right (the related minor chords used as major chords), but also those to the left that step more significantly outside the root key. Thanks for this lesson, very helpful as I begin to work out these very complex Jazz standards that utilize borrowed chords extensively.
@athomewithmusic86983 ай бұрын

I like your graphic of the circle of fifths. However it really should be set up to align with a clock face with C major in the 12 o’clock slot. Students understand it better that way. Also you forgot to add the key of Cb with seven flats next to B. And you forgot to add the key of C# with seven sharps next to Db.
@athomewithmusic86983 ай бұрын
Your comments are quite valid! In my more recent videos on the circle of fifths, I have used a more accurate picture of the circle (with C in its proper place at 12 o'clock, and the keys of Cb and C# included). There are definitely times when I look back at an older video (this one being a year old) and think "I can do better."
