This might be one of the silliest / strangest videos I have done in quite a while. I hope you find it useful and entertaining 🤣

Thank you for showing an example on how to play the casino games, you're one of the rare few who do hands on puzzles, games and traps to show an example and I wish more would do IT! I wish you would do more mini games here

Thank you for the kind words, Isa. I enjoy making videos on running these type of encounters. I always think it is easiest to learn or understand an idea by demonstrating it so folks can watch. And, I'm glad that you are finding my channel useful. :-) Also... I am working on the rules of a Chess mini-game that can be completed in 3 die rolls. Stay tuned!

As someone that doesn't gamble it was good to see examples as I have hand waved games of chance in games before but this has given me an insight on how to handle them next time the PC's want to gamble . Thanks mate

thanks for breaking this down, interesting mini games. Have you ever looked up the actual game that was used to gamble in the "old west", wasn't actually poker. Called Faro, was far more common than poker or other gambling games. it's interesting in how it is played, been thinking to see about simplifying it some for potential TTRPG mini game.

I did not know that. Interesting! I'll have to check into it same day. Thank you, my friend. Cheers!

We play dice pocker (I'm too lazy to explain details, but it's basically yatzy, but you just see who gets better combination in each round) during games sometimes. Usually when our characters hang out on some festival

These are actually pretty good. I'm probably going to use each at least once.

Agreed. I like them too. Nice and simple. Easy to use in a pinch if a PC is looking to gamble some coin at a local tavern.

These sound like fun casino games. I have another dice game I like as a stand in for roulette or a chance wheel. I use a % dice or d100. Betting as follows: odds or evens 2 to 1, groups of 25 (ex 1-25) 4 to 1, single number 10 to 1. I've also used real cards to play poker or blackjack with players filling in for NPCS. I bought 3 dragon anti when Wizards released it at the tail end of 3.5. I've also got the "Han Solo Card Game" which is the version of Sabaac played in the Solo movie. I've had players play their characters broke in many of these games. I've also had players win. Especially with one of my friends that does occasional poker tournaments. Win or lose the players generally have a blast.

I was thinking of using a Boggle roller with the dice replaced with regular D6. This would allow you to do a 4X 4 grid. Players could choose to put amounts on lines horizontal, vertical and diagonal.

Apparently, there's a game called Big Boggle that is a 5X5 grid.

Thanks for the video, Wally! Let me know if you have any good suggestions for vault puzzles because that is the ONLY reason why my adventures would go into a casino.

Thank you, Mason. Much appreciated. Hmmm. What if... when the player characters entered the casino vault it was empty? Except for a Jar of Pennies. Haha, here you go, this one was fun: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpfVhmtvdsaXr6M

Love the idea of the 3 Dragon Ante, but I would just break out a deck of cards and deal them out. Harder to cheat for the players (flipping a result to something higher to win) J,Q,K would just be 11,12,13. Also easier to keep them private before you reveal.
@mason5115
@mason5115 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that too. I would try a variant that would have the last 2 dice rolled after the final bet, or use some sort of digital dice roller, and only the player and the DM can see. There are Three Dragon Ante cards and is worth picking up if you like card games.
@WallyDM
@WallyDM Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the three dragon ante where you have to "hide" your d12 rolls is a bit tough, for sure. Cards would probably work better here... but, if a spontaneous moment calls for improv, it's nice to have the game rules ready to go when all you have is dice available. Cheers, Jason!
@WallyDM
@WallyDM Жыл бұрын
Perhaps you could use five opaque shot glasses to conceal your rolls? That way you could lift it up to look at it, but it would be really obvious if you touched the d12.

How do you play with cards? Do the dealer have to shuffle the cards and give each player 5 cards? Never played it before
@jasonstatham5879
@jasonstatham5879 Жыл бұрын
@@isazainal778 I imagine the DM would play the dealer and shuffle and deal the cards. Then the players would look at the cards handed to them and play it out as described in the video.

I might use some of these in future games, but I wonder if some adjustments might be needed. The Copper Slots very clearly favors the House by a considerable margin so no adjustment needed there, really. I could even make the payout more favorable and still the House comes out on top. For Three Dragon Ante, I'd probably just have the House rake 5% or 10% of the winning pot. Life and Death is where it gets tricky. It looks like it just balances out to even in the long run. It's not quite like Blackjack because there's no busting. Maybe if I give the House a +1 modifier, that will tip the scales just right? I considered a +2 by considering the House Proficient, but players are unlikely to be proficient in this exact game anyway so not really a concern.
@WallyDM
@WallyDM Жыл бұрын
Some neat-o ideas here! You could also have the house roll a d20+d4 or roll with advantage. And then, an insight check may reveal some shady business going on here... Could be fun. Thank you for watching, cheers!
@StupidButCunning

@@WallyDM For sure. I was already thinking of ways I'd allow sleight of hand and such to be used to cheat, and what the casino would have setup as anti-cheat measure. I also need to consider what type of punishment there is for cheating. If I have my casino ever cheat, they'll have to be subtle about it, and have local law enforcement in their pocket. Would work easier in a more lawless area under the control of a gang or similar group.

Im confused on the 'push your luck' choice in the Life and Death game. It basically keeps everything in play and can doubke it if they win. Wouldn't that be the same as just cashing out, but then just using the whole lot as a bet? I'll rewatch it again to check. But an additional risk/reward option would be cool if thats the case
@WallyDM
@WallyDM 8 ай бұрын
Hmmm. Ya know, I'm not sure. I may need to rewatch again to figure out as well, lol. Great question!

What if we gamble XP on a 1 for 1 basis with the gold or silver coins. The problem our group has with these games is the stakes. Even with gold on the line, no one feels invested, and they go all in. If you could win/lose XP on the turn of a card, that would gain their attention.
@WallyDM
@WallyDM Жыл бұрын
This idea has a dark underlying to it... I like it! Haha. Gambling XP is definitely upping the stakes. Oh, hey, that reminds me. Many, many years ago, there was a magic item called the Wheel of Fortune. You had a 50/50 shot of something good or bad happening. Well, Ability Score increases were included, so you could gain or lose a point of strength. Long story short, one of my player's characters spent an hour in REAL time, spinning the Wheel of Fortune trying to break even. Haha, it was epic. Hmmm... would you like to see a video on it?
