Whilst I don't have other tutorials on breaking down the rules just yet I may do in time if folks would find that helpful! But there are youtube channels out there that break down some mechanics and rules for you in a cool way! As for roll20 its good for actually running/playing the games but as mentioned below there was a data leak earlier on this year and a follow up email recently about their changes to security. @Gavin Beaver I 100% agree! Thanks for making folks aware! :D

@Gavin Beaver their moderators are terrible and customer service is abysmal. If you dont like something about their software you either get told to shut up and just accept it or get banned from commenting. Example paying customers have been requesting an option to turn off the pen tool for player As some gms were having a bad time with player scribbling on maps. All of the posts are met with either a ban or the same comment saying that the mods think it adds to the game so they aren't going to add the option to remove it. There was ligit a guy who got banned as he had a similar name as someone complaining about a glitch. When he contested it they appologised for banning him but his persistent attitude to contest his ban was unwanted so he remained banned. Plus out details were sold on the dark web due to their fuck up. Youd think they'd give a free years subscription out for that fuck up. But nah just an email saying they are working on it. Edit: this seemed a little aggressive towards you wasn't intended. im just pissed at how they handle their customers (considering dnd online isnt the biggest target audience so you'd think they would handle their customers with care)

I know the Scratticus Academy are amazing for getting new folks into games so definitely check them out too! WORST case however if you cant find much. Pick up the PHB and run something with 2 or 3 friends for fun. Thats always a good way to start!

@HollowTale5 жыл бұрын
So there are multiple ways to find a game. The join a game function on R20 is usually great. There's also the new drop in games which are great for quickly meeting new groups to play with. There's also the LFG Reddit page for RPGs and the other related Reddit pages such as dungeons_and_dragons which actively have applications open for groups. There's also a good chance there are folks looking on twitter too, there are some twitter's dedicated to it I believe. In addition check out the scratticus academy on twitch/KZbin they have a super active discord and have a lot of games to pick up and play for any level of play! A lot of the resources in the videos first half is very much reflected for players! (aside from the last bit about running the game!) If you find any luck with any of these let me know I would love to hear where you have the most success finding a good group!

Hollow Tale thanks so much. I will give this all a try tonight/this weekend. Do I need anything else ? Should I purchase a handbook or starter set? Or wait till I find a group?
@HollowTale5 жыл бұрын
@@jstones9872 if you are playing online a lot of things will no doubt be covered in the game that will tell you what you need. However! As a rule of thumb I would say the core book is useful to have as a player just because the player's handbook has pretty much everything you will need to look at as a player for a campaign. The starter set and new essentials pack are brilliant for getting set up and going however. But I can't 100% attest to the essentials kit I am planning on reviewing it though! I would say check the rules that are released online for an idea then grab yourself the players handbook when you can. It covers all the options for character creation you will need at the start. There's other books that expand the options of course that your DM may have bit for just jumping in and playing I would say to just grab the PHB or one of the two boxes. (I have heard essentials has plenty to get you started with things though!)

After seeing this video, I'm definitely gonna try to set-up a D&D game with some friends I have online using roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. None of us have experience with D&D except 1 of them(If they want to play). As none of us have ever played before, can anyone give me tips on how to DM a campaign for everyone(Other than "Read the PHB" or "Choose a module to start with")? I really wanna try playing D&D but I'm too socially awkward to play with random people who I don't know and I feel that it'd really limit my experience overall. tl;dr Tips for DMing your first game, please.
@HollowTale5 жыл бұрын
Hey there! So... For a first time DM a lot of valid advice is to read the PHB and to off pick an adventure path (I suggest mines of phandelver or curse of strahd) But personally as someone who has helped a few friends to get into dming I would say the following for a group with no experience: - read the parts of the PHB you NEED so the basics. How to resolve checks, how to run combat etc. Leave the deeper parts initially and add to it every session over time. - focus on the experience of the players and their characters. Have a basic plot and see where they want to go with it. A good way is to set up a session 0. Discuss the basics of rules, roll up sheets with the players personally so you know what they can do and what they want with the character. - don't worry too much about running perfect. No one does. Just run and have fun. If you make mistakes you learn from them and it may end up just being a quirk of the game you all keep for your home game. - just run and see how it goes! That's the biggest step. Don't try to emulate another DM but make sure to be collaborative not adversarial with players.

I am about to start a Roll20 game and I went through the tutorial that roll20 had but it unfortunately kind of went over my head. Listening to you explain it and show what you can do has been a huge boon. Thank you so much
@HollowTale4 жыл бұрын
It can be confusing but honestly take it one step at a time and it's not so bad! I think my biggest challenge was honestly the sheer amount it offers without any guidance on where to begin and what bits are. So happy it's helped hope the games go well!

I want to get into D&D but I live in turkey and there aren’t any english speaking nerds near me so i was thinking on doing it online, but reading the comments, it doesn’t seem like Roll20 was ok, is it good now? And also if I’m an absolute beginner should I read the handbook, watch KZbin vids to explain it, or just go for it?
@HollowTale5 жыл бұрын
Roll20 is fine, I use it multiple times a week every week. There was just a security issue a while back for passwords so I suggest using a password that isnt the same as elsewhere. Which is always suggested! If you are a beginner I say just read the basic rules then try find a new player friendly game! There are plenty out there. Especially look for things like The Mines of Phandelver or a campaign thats just starting so you can play from level 1. Most groups will be good with teaching and helping guide regardless!

So the phone version is a thing but it's not well optimized. However you may be able to find a group that runs through discord that may just run voice only and accept rolling of your own dice in which case it's all good!

Hey thanks for watching, hope it helped! It's completely free to sign up and make games yourself, but there is a limit on storage space and subscribing to a membership has its perks. I'm addition, modules can be bought on R20 which include all the tokens and handouts and maps you'll need to run! Tldr: It's free to use but you can buy extra content to make things easier!

Dear Hallow Tale, I use Flock for video conferencing and adventurers codex which allows me as a DM to track player spell slots abilities and other things. it has been much more effective than your suggested method of using roll 20 and google hangouts which is laggy. I advise to anybody doing virtual DnD to use this method. Good video though, with helpful tips, I find it much easier to play this way with my less "tech savvy" friends who like to play DND "the classic way". I definitely plan to use your method in the future though.
