Great video just one thing I would like to add. As a CDM you have to take runs like no other player on the pitch. When the team is going forward you also go forward to support the passing play. When the team lose the ball, you're probably the first player that needs to run back to protect the defence. A high level of stamina is required for the CDM position. If you get tired easily by making runs, this is not the position for you. It's probably one of the most important positions on the pitch linking both defence and attack together. Sort of like leading an orchestra without taking the headlines. We let the forwards get the fame and glory, we're just in it for the love of the game. Sincerely, a CDM.

Nathan D. I think it depends a lot on what role you play as a CDM. You’re describing a modern CDM, such as Busquest, which I agree is more common and preferred today. However we see examples of deep-lying playmakers like Pirlo who didn’t do as much defensively and instead used his passing abilities as a priority. Also, a classical CDM is a lot less focused on attack and controlling the midfield though defence, and just sweeps up and stays in front of the defence. As a CDM I play a mix between modern and classical, where I mainly stay in front of the defence but I do go forward but not as much as a modern CDM. I always CDM as the most interesting position on the pitch and one I’ve tried to master over the years

Great too. Im a CDM but Im scared going forward to move instead I passed the ball when I received it like Busquets few movemnts.. but I find it boring I wanna play like Modric or Isco who almost always past 1-2 players in midfield and get too close in the Penalty Box.

I think that depends mostly on the formation for example my team plays a 4-3-3 with a double cdm and every now and then one of us goes up and the other stays back by communicating

Something similar happened to me but I’m a center back. For some reason they let me take a free kick and I ended up scoring a 25 yard screamer. Still lost unfortunately but coach wants me to permanently be cdm. I hope he changes his mind because I was almost vomited from all the running lol

Also, you have to shift along with your team, and stay in the middle so you can intercept the ball. Also, CDMs also have many chances to score because they are always open, because while your team makes a counter attack, everybody is paying attention to the box and not what’s behind them. That way, you can ask for the ball, and they can play back so that you can have a one-touch finish in the back of the net. I’m a CDM, so I know a lot about these kind of things.

its simple, firstly u are trying to pass the ball forward, then in width(to your fullbacks or wingers), and then if nothing, pass the ball back

I know this is an old video, and you said something similar to it, but it is very risky to pass through the middle. If the ball is lost it often results in a counter attack by the opponent. So passing more horizontally to the flanks is a more secure way to pass long balls.

Disagree: this is a “defensive midfielder” position you’re talking about. First passing priority should be to find your creative partners, not to find the goal scoring opportunities on a long pass which would most likely end in losing possession. It’s more important to have the right people do the right things. CDMs should focus on winning and keeping ball possession, and putting the more creative and attack-minded people in the position to do what they’re better at.

papillon it depends what type of CDM it is. Pirlo for example didn’t do that and was used as a deep-lying playmaker, despite his lack of defensive capabilities compared to others. A traditional cdm will do what you say but a more modern cdm will look to build up play and control the game defensively and offensively like Busquest. It all depends on what type of CDM you are

Hey guys, I like your videos a lot, but this one has practical mistakes. In a real match, as a CDM (in some languages you call it a 6, I mean players like Toni Kroos, Gündogan, Julian Weigl) you'll always be pressured, meaning that most of the time you'll have to kick the ball back to the defending line and make a fast move to gain space. This at least is how it's practically being played in europe. You won't be given the time to turn around and make a pass on the first ball you get. Not even in the lowest leagues here ;) But like I said, other than that, I like your videos a lot and you helped me very much! Keep up the good work guys :)

You'll always be pressured when you are playing the 6 role. But the key is to make space for yourself. If you can't turn, then go more on the sides to receive the ball.

I think that the main key for any position is confidence, a right amount is perfect were u know u can do something but don’t do too much, I have lacked greatly in confidence since I joint an academy and since leaving still haven’t got my confidence back, some games I just end up trying to fight which for some reason helps my confidence greatly, I used to be perfectly confident and in my opinion was a good player, but I thought I had lost my touch in football until i realised how scared I got when I got passed the ball and don’t know how to get out of that state of mind, it’s really hurt my football and would love to gain my confidence back but don’t know how

One thing I have a problem with is a Defensive Mid is not necessarily launching attacks as his primary duties are DEFENSIVE. You're assuming on top of a CDM they're a deep lying playmaker. Pirlo has a killer pass but I wouldn't leave him back like Casmiero or Busquets. A player like Pirlo is partnered with a CDM or a player like Vidal to provide cover for them and give them a short outlet so they aren't forcing the long ball.

Your point is right but a CDM's most important role in a game is to break an attack and protect the ball before it gets to the last line of defense. That's when his team is on the defensive. But how about when his team is on the offensive?? Of course he is supposed to move the ball forward, IF SAFE TO DO SO, and in doing so he is creating an opportunity to go towards goal of his opposing team. And even a goal in the way.

CDM is my favorite position, it needs a simple but efficient play. I've never been good attacking, but I like to make filtered passes and one touch passes. I like to run trough the central lines to find better passes with fast changes of direction and I like to defend everywhere. But I'm a shit scoring except for headers
