I think Tre’s most identifiable charactistic is how stiff he plays on the hi-hat. Almost a robotically consistent velocity using less wrist and more elbow.
@justinturner653

Elbow is for show, but he's still all wrist (as all good drummers are). It's an art to using correct technique while looking as if you're beating the shit out of the kit recklessly (think kieth moon)

Been watching Green Day live footage and watching his drumming really made it evident how important his playing style is to their overall sound. Not a lot of drummers do that. He’s rock solid, very technical, but definitely epitomizes the “less is more” approach with flashes at just the right time. Very much the same way Charlie Watts did for the Stones.

You know what I think makes drummers better? Learning another instrument. Learn to sing and play piano or guitar, then you'll see songs from other perspectives. And more perspective is always better than less.
@musshwins412
@musshwins412 2 жыл бұрын
So true. If you can play piano, you basically have an understanding of what every other instrument should be doing.

@@musshwins412 The best drummer I’ve ever played with is the guy who is the guitar player at heart but when he was a kid his first band needed a drummer so he was willing to try it.
@djjazzyjeff1232
@djjazzyjeff1232 2 жыл бұрын
@Eggy drummer30 Yes. I'm saying exactly that. To be a better bass player you should learn how to sing. Being able to see a song from more than one perspective is always a good thing. The best drummer I've ever played with is a guitar player first and was forced to drums when he was in high school because he wanted to play in a band so badly but all the music kids already had 2 guitar players, his brother played bass and they had a singer so rather than fight over who would play what he just picke dup the drums and has been playing drums for 10 years now. He's still a better acoustic finger picker than most professional guitar players. But the reason for that I think is because he sees everything through a different view than from ONLY the drummer's perspective. It's like a racecar driver who doesn't know shit about car setup, vs one who knows quite a bit about it AND is a good racecar driver. That guy has a big advantage over the guy who's 1-dimensional.
@djjazzyjeff1232
@djjazzyjeff1232 2 жыл бұрын
@Eggy drummer30 No you don't understand, being the "best drummer in the world" doesn't matter a lick if you can't make good music. If all you know is drums you won't know when you're stepping on a cool guitar part with a drum fill, when there's a spot lacking that could use something as simple as a hi-hat chirp to make it super sick. You might be the "best" drummer around but you won't be as good of a musician. And at the end of the day you're a musician. Here's another analogy, say you're a corner in football and you don't know shit about playing safety, you might be the best corner in the league, but your defense would be overall better if you understand the entire thing and were able to fit within it. That's what a band is. If you know everything about each song and what each person is playing, you'll be better off for it. You can fight be on this all you like but your band would be better if you didn't just bury your head in the sand and reject learning new musical things because you're intimidated.
@djjazzyjeff1232
@djjazzyjeff1232 2 жыл бұрын
@Eggy drummer30 Because let's face it, you're not those guys. Nobody is lol. There are thousands of drummers scrolling through this comment section who play to nobody but the pictures on the wall. It will make you a better musician, at the end of the day you're making music, whether you play drums or any other instrument. So why would you want to avoid being a better musician? That's insane to me.

Nobody ever said that ringo starr is the most technical drummer ever…but it’s universally understood the guy is rock solid in his playing, timing is impeccable, and has the energy to charge through. Tre is no different. Guy is absolutely spot on in his playing and delivers. For those that didn’t know, he started out from a jazz background before Green Day.

It's true that Tre Cool's drumming is a lot simpler than other drummers but it's all about listenability. Thomas langs drum solos may be incredible, but you listen to it once and you forget about it. But how many people listen to Green Day? A LOT! At the end of the day the more enjoyable thing to listen to is Green Day and a lot of the reason for that is Billie's incredible song writing and lyricism, but Tre Cool also plays a huge role in that as well.
