Vote here for Hikaru to do a Streamer and GM duck chess tournament where a GM plays regular chess against another GM but the catch is there will be a streamer on each of the GMS team that moves the duck every turn for the GM.

Duckprotip: The duck has 4 basic functions. 1. To block the opponent from making a move 2. To block a space for you to use for next turn 3. To block a space for the opponent to put the duck in his next move 4. To cut off a piece from protecting/attacking along it's line/diagonal

@@Frank7489 That is how I use the duck as well. King safety is not so important since you can block with the duck. But people focus way too much on the duck and forget that it is way more significant to coordinate your pieces properly. Triangles for example are extremely strong in duck chess, since the duck can only block one diagonal per move. 🙂

And when you’re totally getting into it you purchase a fancy crystal or precious metal duck for use with your $300 hand crafted hardwood Staunton chess set you keep on display in a mahogany display case with your fine china, wine glasses and assorted candlestick holders.

@@jensino exactly, very difficult to block attacks. Often having to choose between saving one piece or another. Not to mention the knights tendencies to not even notice the duck and hop right over them to do devastating attacks

1:12 I am questioning if a duck pro would exchange his knight against a bishop on move 3, but I am only rated 1980 in duck chess and therefore maybe missing the deepness of this quacktic. 😂 2:19 h6 and duck h3 and the knight is trapped. 😎 7:07 Duck g2 and the bishop is trapped. If he takes your pawn you simply take back with your knight and block the queen. 8:11 Hikaru's bishop was in serious danger for a long time, he even mentioned c5 (and blocked it), but it seems he forgot about the threat later on. 🤣 10:50 It is a total mystery to me why Hikaru didn't take the free rook. 🤔 11:30 Now the bishop is hanging completely, you don't even have to block with your duck. True for duck chess. Rock solid advice. 🙂 25:02 In a situation like this you can defend your piece by placing the duck on b7, because your opponent has to move the duck on his next move the diagonal is free again. The way Hikaru played it makes it possible for the queen to take the knight and block on b7. I hope to see more duck chess on this channel. But before Hikaru faces Eric Rosen aka the final Boss of duck chess, he should play against Andrea Botez or Anna Cramling to refine his technique.

Pieces that are only defended once from a non-adjacent square except by a knight are not defended at all, since the player can capture and block the defending piece. Knights and pawns become much more valuable than their counterparts in standard chess.

You can capture a piece that is defend it and then place the duck so that your opponent can’t recapture your peace back. I think there’s a few times especially towards the end there where you could’ve done that. I think you could’ve forked the king and the queen with your night and block his Brooke from recapturing your knight

First, it’s not as difficult a concept as Hikaru makes it sound. This may be only his second batch of playing. The duck is a wall to block attacks where you need it, or can be placed where you don’t want it next turn. Knights can not be blocked from making a capture, but can be blocked from escaping as demonstrated a couple time here, as well as being missed I believe. There is no stalemate, a King can walk into check if desired. The King is captured for a win. I believe that’s all the rules. Key strategy is find a discovered check double check and blocking escape or a key square your opponent requires to block it. This can often pay off. Little is guaranteed. Suggest you watch Eric Rosen’s first go at it and compare it to Hikaru. Next watch Eric’s other clips on this variant.
