I also have been learning the chanter but cannot afford the pipes yet. I want to accomplish this by next summer when the weather is better. Here in Seattle the rainy season has just started.

Hello! I just wanted to chime in and say that when I stumbled upon this video a few years ago, it inspired me to pick up the Feadog whistle my wife got as a gag gift a Christmas long ago and start practicing. Now, playing by ear and practicing in the car here and there, I can finally say that I am PERFECTLY adequate. However, since I started I've had three different brand of whistles; the aforementioned Feadog in D, a crappy $20 plastic combo pack from amazon with a D and a C, and an exceptionally expensive Jonathan Swayne in C as a treat to myself for working so hard at it. With the lattermost, Here's what I've learned: Out of all three, it's the crappy amazon whistles that produce the best sound for me, oddly! Nice, clean, easy, light weight, and impressive at parties. The Feadog sounds metalic and shrill unless I "warm up" by playing it non-stop for about 10 minutes, and even then it's a bit abrasive. It's virtually only useful for playing "Devil's Dance Floor" by Flogging Molly. But the one I am most disappointed about is the Johnathan Swayne. I thought that something expensive and wooden would produce the best sound that I possibly could play. This is not the case. Although it sounds unique to the rest, it's prone to awkward honks and squeaks that isn't present in the plastic ones. I also find I have to blow a bit harder to get to those higher octaves (where most of the squeaking happens). Again, when I warm up for about 10 minutes, it happens way less, but it sill doesn't have that *OOMPH* to it. As such, I want to ask, is it the material that's the problem? Is it me? By all means, though I play well enough on the plastic ones, I'm still an amateur and maybe plastic is the equivalent of training wheels to a grown-up wooden one, yeah? I'd really like to upgrade my D as well, but am worried about experiencing the same pitfalls that came with the John Swayne. I noticed that you are playing a Tony Dixon DX005D in this video and couldn't help but notice how CRISP AND CLEAN it sounds. I know part (maybe all?) of it is that you are a straight-up professional musician, but do you find it would be an easy whistle for, say, a player who's a 5.5 to a 6 out of 10? Any things to watch out for? Anything you had to get used to?

AAAAAAAaaand I just now found the video review you did of said whistle! LOL! My bad!
@CutiepieTinWhistle2 жыл бұрын
Finding a whistle can be difficult. It's actually more about finding the whistle that suits you, and your style of playing. A whistle that suits your sound and volume preference, breath requirements, weight, finger hole spacing, mouthpiece etc. Work out what it is you like about certain whistles, and what it is you dislike about the John Swayne, and try and look for whistles with the qualities you appreciate 😊

Just found you searching for a piano arrangement of Federkleid. Federkleid: my favorite song of all. Now, I am going to buy a tin whistle and learn to play. A silly thought: What if you invite all your fans in Europe to a country setting and all play tin whistle songs together in a beautiful field. Everyone learns the songs ahead of time. Give a year or two notice. Then come here to the USA. Have a few thousand tin whistles playing on a mountain top in West Virginia.

Stephanie, You are always fantastic prepared or unprepared. This song is definitely one not to be missed. This was a very good song choice and very well played. Who am I kidding... I love the way you played this little tune and you look amazing! I never knew that I loved green so much until I saw you wearing it. And your skin tone... It's amazingly even and perfect. How do you get that perfect looking tan? Is it camera tricks and lighting or something else? Well, what more is there to say... There are all sorts of things to say, but I'm just going to say this is one of your most lovely videos musically and visually. And I love you!
@CutiepieTinWhistle6 жыл бұрын
Burt Eastwood Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure any 'tan' is just the light 🤣 I'm always outside but rarely change colour the sun. Green is my favourite, always so hard to find too!
@burteastwood54366 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you told me that green is your favorite... Without green there would be nothing. Nothing, but sand and sky. No green would mean no water as well. We have so much green here almost all year long. When people come here from the north I've heard them say it's all so green... the trees and grass. A hint of fall is in the air here now and no hurricanes coming this way yet. Our worst time for them will be the next six weeks. Hopefully all will be spared for one more year. So many have rebuilt in harms way as if nothing ever happened. It's amazing how soon we forget. I guess that's what makes the world go round. I hope you get some chances to enjoy the outdoors before winter sets in. It's almost time for me to leave for fishing. I'll fish until just after daylight... before it gets really hot. And then I will sleep a while. I hope you have a wonderful day! P.S When you get dislikes or thumbs down I'm sure it's just a slip of the finger or accident. I have been known to hit the wrong button before.

Printed off the finger chart for this off the TWT FB page. You have a conflict between the sign for high octave and the written note letter underneath, which is of course, plainly obvious in the video to anyone who could bare to look away from your playing and study the chart instead. It took until the printout for me to realise this. ;)
