I don't understand the rule on the first turn. If the first player doesn't want the card, can't he just draw normally from the stock pile? Why does he have to "pass"?
@Rulies10 ай бұрын
GREAT QUESTION. I hope you don’t mind if I pin this! ❤️ The special first turn rule is there to make things fair. It lets both players have a shot at the first card in the discard pile before it gets covered. After that, both players also get equal chances with other cards added to the discard pile.

What happens if a player knocks without realizing they have over 10 points in dead wood?
@RuliesАй бұрын
Great question! There are all kinds of house rules for a false knock in gin rummy. Personally, in a friendly game, if someone knocks with more than 10 points and they’re the only one who showed their cards, I just let them pick their hand back up and keep playing. Another common rule is to keep the round going, but make the player who knocked incorrectly leave their hand face-up on the table.
@marypaino1327 Жыл бұрын
One more detail needs clarification, when a player picks the face up card on the discard pile, are they allowed to discard that same card if they happen to change their mind or must they suck it up and lay down a different card?
@Tiger-me3tv Жыл бұрын
Same card can be placed down as the one which was picked up.
@GemmasMusic4 жыл бұрын
I have another question! What if I knock and my opponent and I both have the same amount of deadwood and there's nothing to them to layoff into my hand? Is it a tie and we both get no points?
@Rulies4 жыл бұрын
In that case I recommend that you both put your hands up in the air and say "woaaaaaa!", jk, you both get zero points just like you said. Extra fun fact: in tournaments/gambling you also get bonuses for how many games you win, called a line bonus, but I did not cover that play-style in this video. I only cover games that are played just for fun (and they really gotta be fun).

What happens when the knocker and knockee have the same point values in each of their respective hands post layoff?
@Tiger-me3tv Жыл бұрын
There can't be a tie because the knocker will still get points even if both got the same point value of their respective hands post layoff. The knocker still will get 10 points. A "tie" is still considered an uppercut, in other words, still a win for the knocker

If all 10 cards in a player's hand fit into melds and thereby the player has no deadwood, they can choose to go Gin in which case the round ends and the player going Gin receives a Gin bonus of 25 points (or another established amount) plus any deadwood points in the opponent's hand
@jeffk17222 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of 20 for gin and 10 for undercutting, but the online apps do 25 for each. I don’t like that. Gin shouldn’t be 25 and definitely not 25 just for undercutting IMO
@inordirectional Жыл бұрын
@@jeffk1722 the 25/25 bonus makes the game more interesting and skill-based imo. If the gin bonus is too low, especially coupled with just a 10 point undercut penalty, it removes a lot of strategy from the game because it's almost always best for both players to just try to knock as soon as possible with a wide variety of hands rather than to go for gin (for the possibility of catching their opponent with a bad draw and high deadwood count/without really needing to be concerned about the possibility of losing a few points to being undercut).

I am in my mid 30’s and my entire life I have believed that I grew up playing gin rummy. Apparently, I was wrong. I wonder what it was that I have been playing??
@slendersage87284 жыл бұрын
The answer to this was Rummy 500. For whatever reason my family used both those names interchangeably. We’d call it gin rummy for a quick game and rummy 500 if we were planning on playing for a while. Not sure why. But it was definitely Rummy 500 that I’ve always played lol.
@mr.rogers76124 жыл бұрын
Why can't you play more then 2 with gin rummy but can play more with rummy 500?
