The notes and phrasing of this solo is an absolute masterpiece... But I've also got to say that the tone in this video on those bends is everything to do with the reason that I picked up guitar 41 years ago and still play it today.

I think , I’m not sure .but I think he does that vibrato with that hyperspace pedal that he has . He said in a video on KZbin that he only made two of them a long time ago . He has one , and somebody else has one . I may be wrong ,but he plays a Les paul also with no whammy bar .

Very interesting. With respect to the multiple guitars, did Barry Goudreau contribute to any of it? I'm pretty sure he played the lead on "Foreplay/Long Time". But I'm not sure what else he was involved in. I know Tom Scholz played pretty much every instrument (except drums) on that entire album. Back in the early '80s I bought a Les Paul, put some DiMarzio Supers in it, and bought a Rockman, because I wanted that Boston sound. And I got it! I could strum a chord and it would sound a lot like a Boston guitar sound. I'd plug the Rockman into an amp on the clean channel and get that Boston sound. I still have that Rockman. But I don't have any way to power it up.
@williamyoungblood4221

There's a very very early demo of this, under the title "San Francisco Day" from when the band was called Mother's Milk, and still renting studio time to record, probably around the early 70s (maybe late 60s? Boston timeline stuff is hazy pre debut album) where Barry and Tom are both on lead guitar for the outro, and it sounds like Barry plays the opening line of the outro (but it's unknown whether he improv'd it or if Tom showed him the melody) and then the whole thing sort of progresses into a meandering jam where they're both shred/noodling over each other in a way that feels vaguely Allman Bros, but doesn't have the magic of the final track. By the time of the six song demo, when Tom had built the first basement studio on School Street and holed up to perfect everything, San Francisco day was recorded with Tom on all guitars, bass, and keys, Brad on all vocals, and Jim Masdea on drums. It sounds basically like the album, which was recorded more or less note for note like the demo, only with Sib Hashian on drums. Also per your Rockman, is it a headphone amp and if so does it not work with batteries anymore?
@RoguePhysicist
@RoguePhysicist 2 жыл бұрын
It is a headphone amp. And it works with batteries. It takes 8 AA batteries. There is an AC adapter called "Rockadapter" which was available, and I bought one. However, the Rockadapter no longer works. I recently found it and tried to determine the problem. It seems the problem is in the AC adapter plug part. I think it's a loose wire inside, because if I fidget with the wire, sometimes it comes on. But it will not stay on.
@williamyoungblood4221
@williamyoungblood4221 2 жыл бұрын
@@RoguePhysicist Yeah sounds like a faulty wire in the Rockadapter. I think those still pop up on ebay and reverb every now and again. Sounds like you did test it with AAs and it worked though? Or did you only use it with batteries when you first got it?
@RoguePhysicist
@RoguePhysicist 2 жыл бұрын
When I first bought it, it did not come with a Rockadapter if I remember correctly. In those days, batteries didn't last very long at all. Also, I found that the sound quality degraded quite a bit when those batteries started running out of juice. So I got a Rockadapter and used it all the time, which kept the Rockman operating a full power. I took the Rockadapter to an electronics shop to see if they could fix it. There's a loose wire in the plug portion. Unfortunately, the shop said they don't do small jobs like that. And suggested I pry it open at try to fix it myself. Previously, I searched online to see how to fix an AC adapter plug, which involved prying it open. Prior to that, I put some modern "top-of-the-line" Energizers in it and they lasted a failt long time. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn it off recently and the batteries ran down. I "jimmied" the wires which attach to the plug to get it to work, and now I am using it with the Rockadapter again. Since I am not in a band or anything now, I just have it sitting on the amp and I won't mess with it until the wires come loose again. But if it gets to the point where I can't manipulate it into working, I might just pry it open and try to fix it myself.
