I bought my first amp, a 67 silver face Twin Reverb, from the guy that recorded this riff. It was 1978. I was 15 years old, went to his house in the D. He took me up to his finished attic. I remember it being very light and bright. He pulled back a white drape - it was like the Holy Grail - probably 10 amps stacked up and maybe a 1/2 dozen guitars. I said, “Wow! What do you do?” “I’m play guitar for The Spinners”. I loved that amp.

Loved the Spinners. First time I heard this song in the early seventies I thought the little chord progression was beautiful. When I learned how to play it I was surprised at how simple it was which proves that more is not always better. AWESOME LESSON!!! This song has achieved the rarest feat with me personally since I first heard it in 2nd grade and it's STILL one of my faves at age 52. When I finally started taking guitar lessons in my 20's (circa 1990'), I would ask to learn this style of guitar playing (R&B) but it was the age of "shred" so no one really knew what I was talking about. So a massive THANK YOU for keeping this genre alive. I wish NORMAN HARRIS would be worshiped ala Hendrix, Van Halen, Slash etc. Just for his opening lick alone!

Nice, thanks. But those double octave notes are killing me. Way too far apart for my fat hands. LOL I have to play them with the index on the high E and ring finger on the D string. 2nd & 4th fret slid up to 4th & 6th fret.

Question? Since the "E" chord has no 3rd, wouldn't the 9th become a sus 2nd, making it an E major 7 sus 2nd? A guitarist who knew chord chemistry corrected me when I used to play "Flowers" by the Emotions and told him I was playing a F# maj 9 (same voicing as your E maj 9) and he said if the 3rd is missing the 9th resolves to a sus 2nd making it a F# maj 7 sus2

When you have a 9 in a major chord it eliminates the need to say 7, so the name is not so long like the one you just mentioned. I used to get wrong answers to chord questions like that all the time until I stopped asking players who THINK they know chord chemistry. I check all my chords with a computer chord analyzer program. Most excellent tutorial. This song sounds so wonderfully fragile, wistful and longing, with so little effort. (But what about that waka-chika in seemingly every 70s Motown and Philly song?). To me, Hot Chocolates "So you win again" (wink, nudge) tells the same story, only with a whole lot of bottom.

Eric I comment on a lot of your things. But I got to tell youthis is amazing. I am totally blind dude if you can teach a blind person you got it going on. Young blind people they catch on quick but old drummers well you’ve got a talent unlike anything I have ever seen. I have sang that song all my life but now I have to get out and play and do a single act. I need those cords I’ve always wished that I could be able to see someone make them.
